North American steel yields lower GHG emissions than Chinese steel

According to a series of reports by the Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI), a business unit of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from using Chinese steel in the US are significantly greater than that of comparable steel made in North America. Two peer-reviewed reports (one in North America and another in China) compared hot-dip galvanized (HDG) steel coils produced in North America to the same product produced in China and shipped to the North American market. This type of steel is primarily used in the construction and automotive sectors.

The study found that hot-dip galvanized coil sourced from China results in nearly 50% higher GHG emissions. Mark Thimons, vice president of sustainability for SMDI, said “In the sustainable design of steel-framed buildings, one of the most important decisions an owner or architect can make regarding environmental impact is to ensure the building’s steel is produced in North America.”

Thimons cited an example from another SMDI study involving the design of a four-story cold-formed steel office building in Minneapolis in which the building core and shell includes about 100 tons of HDG. If steel from China was used for this building instead of North American-produced steel, the GHG emissions associated with the production of the steel would increase by more than 100 tons (CO2eq).

China & India pull back from coal imports, hurting prices - Report

Reuters reported that it's not shaping up as a merry Christmas for coal exporters to Asia as the region's top buyers, China and India, pull back from the recent trend of strong imports. The Chinese authorities appear to be making good on a commitment to try and limit the country's imports of the polluting fuel to levels the same as 2017. The restrictions have led to a sharp drop in the daily import of coal so far in December, according to vessel-tracking and port data compiled by Refinitiv. Seaborne imports in the first five days of the month stood at 1.5 million tonnes, or a daily rate of just 300,000 tonnes. This compares to total seaborne imports of 226.2 million tonnes in the first 11 months of 2018, a daily rate of about 677,000 tonnes.

The authorities in Beijing have told coal traders and utilities they want imports for the whole year to be similar to the 279 million tonnes in 2017. This is likely going to be a challenge since customs data showed imports for the first 10 months of the year were 252 million tonnes, up 11 percent from the same period in 2017.

With vessel-tracking data pointing to November seaborne imports of about 18.3 million tonnes, this would in theory leave only about 9 million tonnes available for December.

At the rate of imports for the first five days of December, this may just be possible, as it suggests about 9.3 million tonnes for the month as a whole.

However, the ship-tracking data doesn't cover overland imports, mainly from neighbouring Mongolia, meaning it's likely that 2018 imports will probably exceed those of 2017.

Indonesia woos Chinese investors with Belt and Road projects worth up to USD 82 billion

Reuters reported that Indonesia is offering new projects worth up to USD 60 billion to Chinese investors in a bid to capitalise on Beijing's Belt and Road initiative, a senior official said, despite growing concern about the strings tied to some of the loans worldwide. Despite Indonesia's strategic location, South-east Asia's largest economy has not been among the biggest beneficiaries of China's trillion-dollar push to create a modern day Silk Road. Its best-known Belt and Road project is a US$6-billion railway linking the capital, Jakarta, to the textile hub of Bandung, which has faced land procurement problems.

However, Jakarta has been in "structural communication" with Beijing since last year on possible infrastructure projects worth a combined US$50 billion to US$60 billion, said Ridwan Djamaluddin, the deputy for infrastructure at Indonesia’s Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs.

He told Reuters in an interview that Indonesia has proposed potential projects across the archipelago, while Chinese officials and experts have toured regional governments in search of projects to fund.

Mr Ridwan said that "We are fully aware that we must not let this cooperation end badly. Other countries have been forced to pay back loans and some have let go of their assets. We don't want that."

He said that getting agreement has taken longer than expected because Indonesia insisted on a business-to-business (B2B) structure for all its deals, refusing to take any government-to-government loans.

He added that "I understand we're not as quick as other countries to tap the fund because the fund owner will think longer on our offers."

Reconstruction of quake-destroyed bridge between Nepal and China begins - Report

Xinhua reported that China has started work on reconstructing the Friendship Bridge over Bhotekoshi river at Tatopani-Zhangmu border point, which was damaged by 2015 earthquake in Nepal. Mr Ram Man Singh, secretary at bordering ward No. 2 of Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality in Sindhupalchowk district of Nepal told Xinhua on Wednesday that the Chinese side has started work on reconstructing the Friendship Bridge from this week. He said that "This has given us hope that the border will be reopened soon."

The border point has remained closed since the deadly quake occurred. According to Singh, the closure of the border point has brought the economic activities in the areas to a standstill as it is the main trade route between the two countries.

After the earthquake damaged the bridge, China had built a temporary bridge near the previous one to deliver the imported goods stuck on the Chinese side to Nepal after the quake. China has also been assisting Nepal to rebuild damaged roads around the area and a dry port at Larcha, around six km inward in Nepal to conduct bilateral trade.

Vrouwen Myanmar massaal verkocht aan Chinese mannen

Door Annelie Langerak
Updated 2 uur geleden
3 uur geleden in BUITENLAND

Chinese export groeit beduidend minder sterk

(ABM FN-Dow Jones) De Chinese export is in november flink vertraagd.

Tangshan deepens output curbs in December to fight smog - Report

Reuters reported that steel mills and other industrial plants in China’s top steelmaking city Tangshan were on Saturday ordered to make further output cuts in December, as part of emergency measures to fight smog. The order from the local government came as it forecast several bouts of smog to blanket the region from December 9 until December 31. Steel mills in the smog-prone city will need to shut their sintering capacity by 30-60% or even shut down based on their emission level, while coke plants must extend production time in order to churn out less dust.

Companies in construction materials, pharmaceutical, cement and mining industry were also asked to enforce emergency measures under second-level smog alerts, the second highest in the country’s four-tier alarming system, in December. Tangshan also set restrictions on diesel-fueled trucks delivering commodity materials to and from ports.

The city’s mills have already complied with production restrictions ordered for the winter, with cuts averaging 30-35%, lower than 42% last year.

US DoC levies import duties on Chinese aluminium sheet

United States has issued final duties in a trade case it self-initiated when the US Commerce Department imposed final anti-dumping and anti-subsidy duties of 96.3-176.2% on common alloy aluminium sheet products imported from the People’s Republic of China. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said “We will continue to do everything in our power under US law to restrict the flow of dumped or subsidized goods into US markets.”

The USITC will make final injury determinations on December 20, concluding the investigation it instituted almost exactly one year ago and commenced in January.

Though steep, the sanctions levied this week are down from the sanctions imposed earlier this year, which ranged from 198.4-280.46%

China's BYD plans to list its battery business by 2022

Reuters reported that China's BYD Co Ltd plans to list its battery business by 2022, the electric vehicle (EV) maker's latest move to rev up its growing battery unit. The carmaker was confirming a report earlier from Bloomberg, which cited comments from an interview with BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu.
