ADNOC LNG Signs Agreements with BP and Total

ADNOC LNG has concluded supply agreements with subsidiaries of BP and TOTAL, effectively booking out the majority of its LNG production through Q1 2022. With the transactions, ADNOC LNG has continued to expand its footprint into new regions and markets. These agreements are milestones in ADNOC LNG’s successful transition to a multi-customer marketing strategy that began just eight months ago in April 2019. Since then, ADNOC has shifted from supplying 90% of its LNG molecules to a single utility customer in Japan, which remains an important customer for ADNOC LNG, to supplying 90% of its LNG molecules to a range of clients and receiving terminals in more than eight countries across southern and southeast Asia including India, China, South Korea and Taiwan.

ADNOC LNG produces about 6 million tons per annum of LNG from its facilities on Das Island off the coast of Abu Dhabi and is one of the world’s most reliable producers of the super cooled liquefied gas. ADNOC was the first LNG exporter in the Middle East and has been a reliable supplier of gas to global markets for over 40 years. Abu Dhabi’s strategic geographical location gives ADNOC advantaged access to growth markets in the Middle East and Asia, which are expected to drive significant gas demand in the near and long-term future.

ADNOC LNG is majority owned by ADNOC, which has a 70% share of the company. Additional shareholders are Mitsui & Co (15%), BP (10%), and TOTAL (5%).

Volkswagen LNG Car Freighters from January 2020

Volkswagen Group Logistics is the first company to use two car freighters powered by liquefied natural gas in overseas traffic. The two charter ships of Siem Car Carriers were launched last Friday in Xiamen in China. Both ships will replace two of the nine conventional heavy oil-powered cargo ships currently used by Group logistics on the Atlantic between Europe and North America. The SIEM CONFUCIUS will be integrated into this service from January 2020 after its transfer from Asia to Europe. The second ship will start operations in spring 2020 in the same area.

The two technologically advanced ships, each 200 meters long and 38 meters wide, have 13 car decks and a capacity of 7,500 RT, which corresponds to approximately 4,700 vehicles of the Volkswagen Group model mix. So far, only a few smaller ships for rolling cargo have been built with LNG propulsion for short-haul traffic; for overseas vehicle shipments, Group logistics is a pioneer for this type of propulsion.

Both vehicle transporters are powered by a 12,600 kW dual-fuel marine engine with direct injection and exhaust gas treatment from MAN Energy Solutions of the Volkswagen Group. In addition to liquid, deep-frozen natural gas, they can also be operated with environmentally friendly e-gas produced via Power-to-X or biogas. In eco-speed mode, the ships are running 16.5 knots (30.6 km/h). With their two tanks, each holding 1,800 cubic meters, the transporters have similar vehicle capacities and ranges compared to conventional heavy oil-powered ocean freighters.

‘LNG truck emits more nitrogen than diesel truck’

The Dutch authorities are again appropriating a budget for cleaner trucks driving on liquefied natural gas (LNG), but they emit up to five times more nitrogen than diesel trucks. That was the conclusion of some driving tests the Dutch authorities ordered, and that was taken out on Thursday by the European environmental organization, Transport & Environment (T&E). The NGO says that European countries have to stop subsidizing LNG trucks.

‘Alarming results’
According to the driving tests in The Netherlands, LNG trucks are emitting two to five times more nitrogen than the cleanest diesel trucks. Alarming results, says the environmental organization Natuur & Milieu, since the Dutch cabinet of Infrastructure just announced to subsidize those trucks the coming two years.
“We cannot support a fossil fuel that hardly yields any profit for the climate, and that is harmful to nature and the quality of the air,” says a spokesperson.

‘Cleaner’
Liquefied natural gas is considered ‘cleaner’ than diesel, but it still is a fossil fuel. Truck transport should make the transition to renewable energy – using electric or hydrogen vehicles – but until now, LNG is seen as the best alternative for diesel. “LNG, however, is no structural solution,” explains Jan Peter Müller from Müller Fresh Food Logistics in Holten. “The use of LNG is mainly fiscally pushed.” Probably the reason why transport companies still buy new diesel trucks.

The LNG trucks, however, have better results when it comes to CO2 emissions. But, according to the driving tests, they produce almost as many particles as diesel trucks. Compared to CNG (Compressed Natural Gas), LNG has four times more calorific value, requires less bulky storage tanks on board, and gives a higher range, making it more suitable for long-distance transport.

Fiscal reward
Natuur & Milieu pleads for a different way of promoting greener transport, other than subsidizing LNG. “The Ministry of Infrastructure should mainly focus on zero emissions of transport by promoting electric and hydrogen vehicles,” says a spokesperson. “Or by fiscally rewarding the use of renewable gas.”

In Belgium, last year, Shell opened the first of three LNG filling stations for trucks in Herstal, near Liège.

Study Confirms LNG Delivers Strong Return on Investment for VLCCs

SEA\LNG has released the results of its third investment study, which underlines liquefied natural gas as a compelling investment solution for Very Large Crude Carriers on the Arabian Gulf to China trade route. Conducted by independent simulation and analytics expert Opsiana, the study demonstrates clear benefits of LNG as a marine fuel for a newbuild 300K DWT VLCC on the Arabian Gulf to China trade route, in comparison with other alternatives currently available and scalable to the shipping industry across three fuel pricing scenarios.

The business case compares the relative investment performance of four propulsion alternatives: a conventional VLCC sailing with Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil; a scrubber-equipped VLCC sailing mostly with Heavy Fuel Oil; and two LNG powered VLCCs, one with a high-pressure 2-stoke engine, the other a low-pressure 2-stroke engine.

The study clearly indicates that LNG as a marine fuel delivers a strong return on investment on a net present value (NPV) basis over a conservative 10-year horizon. The analysis is bolstered by compelling paybacks from three to five years.

LNG Gate in Rotterdam
