GE to Supply Turbine for Ocean Wind Offshore Project in New Jersey

GE Renewable Energy announced that it has finalized supply and service contracts, subject to final notice to proceed with Ocean Wind, the Orsted Project located 15 miles off the coast of southern New Jersey. Ocean Wind will feature GE’s Haliade-X 12 MW wind turbine with an option to utilize the 13 MW variant. The agreements will include a five-year Service & Warranty agreement to provide operational support for the wind turbines along with the Orsted Operational and Maintenance team.

The Haliade-X 13 MW uses the same design as the 12 MW, meaning the size and dimensions of the turbines are identical. However, GE Renewable Energy engineers have optimized the turbine by making some enhancements to the cooling system and related electrical equipment so that it can produce even more power using the same design and size. As a result, one spin of the Haliade-X 13 MW can generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of a US household for a day.

The Ocean Wind Offshore Wind Farm is located over 15 miles off the coast of southern New Jersey and will be capable of powering up to the equivalent of half a million New Jersey homes each year when complete.

The Haliade-X blade will continue to be tested and optimized at the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center Wind Technology Testing Center in Boston and at other sites around the country and around the world. In addition, the Haliade-X prototype unit in the Netherlands, which set a world record in January 2020 by being the first wind turbine to produce 288 MWh in one day, will be operating at 13 MW in the coming months as part of its ongoing testing process. The Haliade-X 12 and 13 MW configurations have both received type certificates from DNV-GL, the world’s largest independent certification body, providing independent verification that the new turbines will operate safely, reliably and according to design specifications.

Enel’s Wind + Storage Hybrid Project to Support Kellogg Company

Enel, through its US renewable subsidiary Enel Green Power North America, has started construction of Azure Sky wind + storage, its first large-scale hybrid project globally to integrate wind and battery storage at one site. Through a 100 MW virtual power purchase agreement, Enel will sell to Kellogg Company a 360 GWh portion of the electricity delivered to the grid annually from the Azure Sky wind project, which is equal to 50% of the volume of electricity used across Kellogg’s North American manufacturing facilities. Located in Throckmorton County, Texas, the 350 MW wind farm paired with approximately 137 MW of battery storage will be Enel’s third hybrid project in the US that integrates a renewable energy plant with utility-scale battery storage.

Under the terms of the VPPA, Kellogg will purchase approximately 360 GWh of electricity annually from Enel, contributing to the leading plant-based food company’s collective efforts to achieve over 50% renewable energy and reach 50% of its global Better Daysgoal to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 65%. Kellogg’s renewable electricity purchase is the equivalent amount of electricity it takes power more than 43,000 homes each year in North America and is estimated to avoid over 250,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually, equivalent to the amount of carbon sequestered by 330,000 acres of US forest each year, which is larger than Rocky Mountain National Park.

The 79 wind turbines at the Azure Sky project are expected to generate over 1,300 GWh each year, which will be delivered to the grid and will charge the battery located in the same facility. The expected annual electricity generated by the Azure Sky project is equivalent to avoiding the emission of over 842,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere each year. The battery storage system will be capable of storing the power generated by the wind turbines, while also providing services to enhance grid flexibility. At around 137 MW, the system will be one of the largest battery storage facilities in the world.

The Azure Sky wind + storage project is the latest example of Enel’s commitment to invest in renewables-plus-storage hybrids in the US. Enel is currently constructing a similar plant, the 284 MW Azure Sky solar + storage project, in a neighboring county and a third hybrid project, 181 MW Lily solar + storage project, also in Texas.

Breakthrough GE MW Scale Modular Multi-Level Wind Power Converter

A team of engineers in the Electrical Systems group at GE Research have achieved one of the world’s firsts in the power conversion sector, demonstrating a MW-scale modular, multi-level wind power converter in its lab in Upstate New York. The demonstration successfully culminates the key objective a five-year project through the U.S. Department of Energy Advanced Manufacturing Office’s Next Generation Electric Machines program. While the principal objective of the program was to demonstrate the wind power converter, another positive outcome of the project was the development and demonstration of an early power conversion system for hybrid electric flight. Hybrid electric flight is another key focus area for GE Research and for the DOE’s AMO.

To pull off the wind converter demonstration, GE engineers turned one of their labs on campus into a virtual 3.5 MW wind turbine outfitted with an actual wind generator and gearbox from GE’s Renewable Energy business. GE scientists then developed, built and integrated its modular, multi-level “Tower of Power,” as it was coined by the team, into this virtual environment. The setup allowed the converter to be tested under real conditions as if a 300+ foot high wind turbine was standing tall and spinning in the middle of GE’s Research campus.

ALEX KUFFNER | The Providence Journal

GE Researchers Unveil 12 MW Floating Wind Turbine Concept

GE researchers have unveiled details of an ongoing two year USD 4 million project through the ARPA-E’s ATLANTIS , Aerodynamic Turbines Lighter and Afloat with Nautical Technologies and Integrated Servo-control, program to design and develop advanced controls to support a 12 MW Floating Offshore Wind Turbine. GE is partnering on the project with Glosten, one of the leading design and consulting firms in the marine industry, and the developer of the PelaStar tension-leg platform floating wind turbine foundation. Through ATLANTIS project with ARPA-E, GE will be concurrently designing the controls system with the design of the floating structure itself to advance Floating Offshore Wind Energy toward becoming a future commercially viable solution.

Accelerating the development of new technologies to promote the future of floating offshore wind energy is the key objective of ARPA-E’s Atlantis program. By coupling a 12 MW GE turbine with Glosten’s tension leg platform technology, the team has taken on the challenge of designing a light-weight Floating Turbine with up to 35% less mass in the tower and the floating platform. This is expected to result in a very significant reduction of the resulting Levelized Cost of Energy, LCOE, of the electricity generated with this turbine. The core principle that makes this possible is co-designing the controls system with the tower and floating platform.

RWE’s US Onshore Wind Farm Scioto Ridge in Operation

RWE Renewables has started commercial operation on its 250 megawatt onshore Scioto Ridge Wind Farm in the US. The project, located in Hardin and Logan Counties, is powered by 75 Siemens Gamesa turbines and represents RWE’s first onshore wind project in Ohio.

Scioto Ridge is RWE’s 28th onshore wind farm in the U.S. and has the capacity to provide clean energy for more than 60,000 households.

Ohio has enormous potential for future projects, as wind power provides less than 2 percent of the total electricity generation in the state. In addition Ohio has a long history of industrial manufacturing, including approximately 52 wind-related factories – the most of any single state in the US.

Enel Green Power Starts Lagoa Dos Ventos Wind Farm in Brazil

The Enel Group’s Brazilian renewable energy subsidiary Enel Green Power Brasil Participagoes Lida has started commercial operations of the 716 MW Lagoa dos Ventos wind farm, which is the largest wind facility currently in operation in South America and Enel Green Power’s largest wind farm worldwide. The construction of the 716 MW facility, located in the municipalities of Lagoa do Barro do Piauf, Queimada Nova and Dorn Inocencio, in Brazil's northeastern state of Piauf, involved an investment of around 3 billion Brazilian reais, equivalent to around 620 million euros at the current exchange rale.

The 716 MW Lagoa dos Ventos, which is now fully up and running, is comprised of 230 wind turbines and will be able to generate over 3.3 TWh per year while avoiding the emission of over 1.9 million tons of CO2 into the atmosphere. Out of the wind farm's total installed capacity, 510 MW were awarded to Enel Green Power in Brazil's A-6 public tender in December 2017 and is supported by 20-year power supply contracts with a pool of distribution companies operating in the country’s regulated market, while the output from the remaining 206 MW will be delivered to the free market for sale to retail customers, leveraging Enel's integrated presence in the country.

In December 2020, Enel announced the start of construction of the new 396 MW Lagoa dos Ventos III wind project. With the new wind farm, which will require an investment of around 360 million euros, the total capacity of Lagoa dos Ventos will reach around 1.1 GW. The entire wind complex will have 302 wind turbines and will be able to generate around 5.0 TWh annually, avoiding the emission of over 2.8 million tons of CO2 into the atmosphere each year.
