De Amerikaanse president Joe Biden heeft aangekondigd dat hij alles zal doen om de hervorming van het Amerikaanse stemrecht goedgekeurd te krijgen, inclusief de regels in de Senaat wijzigen. Die hervorming moet de toegang tot de stembureaus beschermen voor minderheden en in het bijzonder voor zwarte Amerikanen. In Georgia en andere overwegend Republikeinse staten bestaan wetten die minderheden, die vooral op Democraten stemmen, het stemmen moeilijk maken.

The Russian deputy foreign minister, Alexander Grushko, emerged from the four hours of talks renewing Moscow’s threat that it would take military steps if political measures were not enough to “neutralise the threats” it says it faces. His remarks came only days after his fellow Russian diplomat, Sergei Ryabkov, had assured reporters Russia had no intention of invading Ukraine.

The US delegation leader, the deputy secretary of state, Wendy Sherman, said she had heard nothing in Brussels that differed from the Kremlin position laid out at bilateral talks in Geneva, demanding a guaranteed end to Nato expansion and a withdrawal of alliance troops in formerly Soviet bloc countries that joined the alliance after 1997.

Those proposals remained unacceptable to the US and all Nato allies, Sherman said. She also pointed out that there were still more than 100,000 Russian troops deployed close to the Ukrainian border, some of which had carried out exercises with live ammunition in recent days.

Ohio Supreme Court rejects GOP-drawn congressional map as unfairly partisan

The Ohio Supreme Court on Friday rejected a new congressional map drawn by state Republican lawmakers as unconstitutional and ordered it redrawn, marking a major victory for Democrats in a state where lopsided districts have confounded their efforts to gain seats in the House.

Democrats and voting rights groups had sued after Republicans created a map in November in which the party would have been favored to win 12 out of 15 seats, according to the court’s 4-3 opinion. They charged that the new lines defied a constitutional amendment passed by voters in 2018 to ban partisan gerrymandering.

While Republicans have won most recent statewide elections, their margins of victory have been far smaller.

“Gerrymandering is the antithetical perversion of representative democracy,” Justice Michael Donnelly wrote in the decision. “Its singular allure is that it locks in the controlling party’s political power while locking out any other party or executive office from serving as a check and balance to power.”

The court ordered the state legislature to submit a new map in the next 3o days.

The decision came two days after the court also struck down new state legislative maps as unconstitutional and ordered them redrawn.

The ruling Friday on the congressional district map created the possibility of several new Democratic-leaning seats in the state, a significant impact given the party’s narrow House majority at the beginning of what is expected to be a difficult election year. Democrats have lost seats due to redistricting in growing southern states, particularly those held by Republicans.

The move by Ohio’s Republican lawmakers was the second consecutive effort to blunt Democratic growth. After redistricting in 2011, the state’s congressional delegation went from 10 Democrats and eight Republicans when Barack Obama won the state in 2008 to 12 Republicans and four Democrats when Obama won it again in 2012. Not a single seat flipped since.

Hamilton County, which contains the heavily-Black city of Cincinnati, was sliced in half in 2011, and those minority voters lumped into districts with more rural, majority-White voters. For the past decade, the county, which voted for President Biden, was represented by two conservative Republicans.

Although the constitutional amendment called for counties to be kept whole, GOP lawmakers again chopped up Hamilton County last year, this time into three pieces.

“The enacted plan splits Hamilton County into three districts for no apparent reason other than to confer an undue partisan advantage on the Republican Party,” Donnelly wrote.

Russia's intelligence bureau FSB said the group had "ceased to exist".

However, it does not appear that any Russian members of the gang will be extradited to the United States.
The agency said it had acted after being provided with information about the REvil gang by the US.

According to the Russian state news service Tass, REvil "developed malicious software" and "organised the theft of money from the bank accounts of foreign citizens".
The FSB said it had seized more than 426 million rubles (£4m), including about £440,000 worth of crypto-currency.

It also seized more than 20 "premium cars" which had been purchased with the proceeds of crime.
"The organised criminal association has ceased to exist and the information infrastructure used for criminal purposes was neutralised," the FSB said in a statement.

Russia's announcement comes during a standoff between the United States and Russia.
Moscow is demanding Western guarantees, including that Nato will not expand further. It has also built up its troops near the Ukraine border.

In veel gevallen is dat zo. Deels is dat protest denk ik ook terecht. De overheid die er ooit was om de bevolking te dienen is om allerlei redenen steeds meer onder invloed komen te staan van een nationaal overstijgend bedrijfsleven en een cultuur die de allerrijksten steeds meer macht geeft.

Niet inenten is niet de meest verstandige weg. Al begrijp ik de weerstand tegen de macht van het medisch-industrieel complex.
Maar wat is wel de beste manier?

Een Democratische gouverneur in de Amerikaanse staat Maine heeft een wet om landarbeiders werknemersrechten te geven met een veto afgewezen.
Ze wil de boeren niet opzadelen met zulk soort wetgeving waarbij de werknemers rechten krijgen op bijvoorbeeld minimum loon of bepaalde werktijden.
Schandelijke standpunten zijn in de VS geen absoluut recht van de Republikeinen, dat blijkt wel weer.

Scholing was alleen nodig voor een klein deel van de samenleving, de elite, vonden zij en Trump.
Vor de opleiding van elite kwamen prive scholen die zich zelf bedropen uit de college gelden van de studenten van rijke ouders
Die elite kon aan het hoofd van de ondernemingen staan.

Voor de rest van de Amerikanen kon bezuinigd worden op onderwijs, want zij hadden alleen beperkte kennis nodig om het werk uit te voeren.

Biden gaat dit nu drastisch herzien en een panel samenstellen voor de grote lijnen om het onderwijs voor iedere Amerikaan toegankelijk te maken

Donderdag is het precies een jaar geleden dat Joe Biden werd beëdigd als de 46ste Amerikaanse president. Na vier jaar Donald Trump slaakten velen een zucht van verlichting. Maar zijn de Verenigde Staten er intussen beter aan toe?
Biden heeft zijn best gedaan om puin te ruimen, dat wel. Puin van de coronacrisis, de geteisterde economie en het gekelderde vertrouwen in zijn land. Maar van wederopbouw is er nog maar weinig sprake.
Daarvoor is Amerika nog te verdeeld — en Biden veel te zwak.

Joe Biden zorgde voor grote verwarring toen hij zei dat een „kleine inval” door Rusland zou zorgen voor een kleinere reactie van de VS en bondgenoten. Dat zorgde voor geschrokken reacties in Oekraïne en gefronste wenkbrauwen in de VS.

Daar schrok hij kennelijk zelf zo van dat hij dat later moest corrigeren met de mededeling dat hij met een kleine inval doelde op een niet-militaire actie van de Russen, zoals een cyberaanval.

Een verkeerd signaal en de zoveelste uitglijder van Sleepy Joe.
