Ukrainian military analyst: Russian offensive in Donbas has started losing steam

Military expert and reserve colonel of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Oleh Zhdanov believes that by the end of June Russian troops will switch to trench warfare.

"In principle, today the intensity of the hostilities is decreasing. The Russians are trying to resume the offensive in certain areas around Severodonetsk, but this is not as powerful an offensive as it was at the beginning of last week, when the situation seemed almost critical for us, and the threat of encirclement was very big," Zhdanov explained.

He stressed that the Russians are already beginning to move troops from other directions.

"We'll see where that leads. But I think it will be the deadline [June 22] for them to focus their efforts. Then, most likely, everything will move to trench warfare," he said.

According to Zhdanov, June 22 is a new deadline, by which Russian president Vladimir Putin wants to capture the entire Luhansk region.

"These are consequences or the old Soviet imperial ambitions, when even a war is planned to a certain date. This was done by the Soviet Union, but we know at what cost and the number of losses," Zhdanov concluded.

On June 12, the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Valerii Zaluzhnyi said that the Ukrainian Armed Forces began counteroffensive in certain directions. According to him, the fighting is currently taking place along 1105 km of the front, when its total length is 2450 km.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the fiercest fighting is taking place in Severodonetsk, Lysychansk, Bakhmut, Slavyansk.

'Traitors' gave vital co-ordinates to Russians - Mariupol mayor

More now from the mayor of Mariupol, Vadym Boichenko, who has left the city and has been speaking to the BBC.

He says the destruction of the city's critical infrastructure at the beginning of the invasion was well co-ordinated.

He claims "traitors" passed on co-ordinates to Russian forces early on.

"They knew where to shell. There were many traitors who gave co-ordinates. Everything we had, everything that is considered the critical infrastructure of the city, was destroyed in the first seven days.

"There are 15 power supplies in the city. Even the mayor did not know where they all were. And they knew and in a week destroyed all 15. The city was left without light," he says.

Water points, communication lines and warehouses storing food and medicine were also targeted, Boichenko says.

He accuses the "traitors" of being city council deputies from the pro-Russian The Opposition Platform - For Life party. They now rule the city under the Russian occupation, he says.

The BBC has not been able to independently verify his claim

No humanitarian aid is possible. The Russians control 70% of the city, ZSU ( Ukrainian Armed Forces ) controls the other 30%.

Zelenski belooft Krim te heroveren

De Oekraïense president Volodimir Zelenski heeft zijn inwoners beloofd dat Kiev het door Rusland geannexeerde schiereiland de Krim zal heroveren. “De Oekraïense vlag zal opnieuw wapperen over Jalta en Soedak, over Dzjankoj en Jevpatorija”, zei Zelenski maandag in zijn videoboodschap vanuit Kiev.

Het Russische leger bezette het schiereiland in de Zwarte Zee in 2014, toen Oekraïne na een machtswisseling verzwakt was en geen weerstand kon bieden. Vervolgens werd een referendum gehouden, dat internationaal niet wordt erkend, en werd de Krim bij Rusland ingelijfd. Zelenski heeft altijd gepleit voor de herovering van het schiereiland, maar heeft dat zelden zo stellig als oorlogsdoel naar voren geschoven.

De president riep zijn landgenoten op om contact te houden met de door Rusland bezette delen van het land, zoals Donetsk of de regio Charkov. Rusland probeert de bezette gebieden af te snijden, zodat de mensen er niets weten over hoe Oekraïne territorium probeert te bevrijden, en ze zelfs niet denken over terugkeren naar het normale leven, aldus Zelenski. Volgens Zelenski zijn alleen genoeg wapens, van de partnerlanden, nodig om alle bezette gebieden te heroveren. “Niemand kan vandaag precies zeggen hoe lang onze weg naar de overwinning zal duren. Maar de overgrote meerderheid van de mensen weet nu al dat dit onze weg is. Dit is hoe deze oorlog zal eindigen.”

Je ziet het verkeerd kijk maar naar je vriend Poetin.
Zelenski neemt gewoon terug wat van hem is. En hij heft groot gelijk.
Gaat Poetin eeuwen terug in de tijd dan gaat Zelenski een paar jaar terug.
Vanwege onze lafheid toen zit Rusland nog op de Krim.

Noem nu eens een punt dat nog niet op dit draadje heeft gestaan.
Wat u doet is dubbel benoemen en dat gebeurt hier helaas wel vaker.
