Equinor & BP to Develop Offshore Wind Power in US

Equinor has entered into an agreement with BP to sell 50% non-operated interests in the Empire Wind and Beacon Wind assets on the US east coast for a total consideration before adjustments of USD 1.1 billion. Through this transaction, the two companies are also establishing a strategic partnership for further growth within offshore wind in the US. Currently Equinor holds a 100% interest in both the Empire Wind lease, located off the coast of New York State, and the Beacon Wind lease, located off the Massachusetts coast. The transaction is in line with Equinor’s renewable strategy to access attractive acreage early and at scale, mature projects, and capture value by de-risking high equity ownership positions.

Equinor will remain the operator of the projects in these leases through the development, construction and operations phases and it is anticipated that the wind farms will be equally staffed after a period of time.

Through this partnership Equinor and BP will consider future joint opportunities in the US for both bottom-fixed and floating offshore wind and will leverage relevant expertise to jointly grow scale. As the partnership develops, both companies hope to expand this cooperation further in a market that is forecast to grow to between 600 and 800 gigawatts globally by 2050. Equinor has already set ambitions to grow its renewables capacity to 4 to 6 GW by 2026 and 12 to 16 GW by 2035, and has recently announced its expectation to accelerate these ambitions. Equinor is working to build scale in core areas – the North Sea, the United States and the Baltic Sea – while securing growth options in other selected markets for both bottom-fixed and floating offshore wind.

BP’s acquisition of the interests in Empire Wind and Beacon Wind has an effective date of 1 January 2020 and is expected to close in early 2021, subject to customary conditions including purchase price adjustments and authority approval.

Akuo & Partners Complete Financing of Onshore Windfarm in Illinois

A consortium led by Akuo and composed of Harrison Street, Morgan Stanley, and GE Energy Financial Services announced financial close for Bennington Wind, a 93.06 MW onshore wind development project located approximately 100 miles southwest of Chicago in Bennington Township in Marshall County, Illinois. Situated in the eastern part of the Midcontinent Independent System Operator regional transmission operator territory, the project will benefit from proximity to major population centers, an excellent wind resource, and limited grid congestion. GE Renewable Energy will supply thirty-three 2.82 MW turbines. Akuo will commence construction later this month, and the wind farm is projected to reach operational status in Q4 2021.

The project will produce enough electricity to power approximately 33,277 households and will offset the equivalent of 303,815 tons of carbon dioxide during each year of operation. This is the equivalent 9,114,441 tons of avoided carbon emissions over project’s 30 year life. The project has been in development by Akuo since 2016.

The Bennington Wind project marks Harrison Street’s fourth investment in a US wind farm and the first with Akuo.

Morgan Stanley is the sole provider of construction financing and is the exclusive buyer of power and Renewable Energy Credits under a long-term Power Purchase Agreement. This PPA will deliver a significant portion of Morgan Stanley’s renewable energy required to achieve the firm’s commitment to 100% carbon neutrality and 100% renewable electricity sourcing by 2022. The windfarm renewable electricity production will account for over 50% of Morgan Stanley’s electricity consumption and 30% of its carbon footprint globally.

GE EFS is the tax equity provider for the project. Bennington marks the third successful collaboration between GE EFS and Akuo building on the success of 150 MW Rocksprings wind farm in Texas and the 30 MW Sterling wind farm in New Mexico.

Iberdrola’s Vineyard Wind Liberty Wind Offshore Project in New York

Iberdrola, through Vineyard Wind, has taken part with its Liberty Wind project in the second auction of wind power held by New York State. Specifically, this development would entail putting into operation a total capacity of up to 1,300 megawatts, which could supply clean energy to around 700,000 New York homes and businesses. The proposal presented by the company to develop Liberty Wind offers six options for the development of this large facility. One of them, as it has been proposed, would represent the greatest commitment of direct economic benefit that has ever been considered in the US offshore wind sector. In this way, Liberty Wind would help reinforce New York's leadership in creating green jobs and equal opportunities.

Along these lines, the recent request for proposals by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority is part of the state's general effort to achieve 9,000 MW of offshore wind power generation by 2035.

Nordex Group Bags 240 MW Wind Turbine Order in Texas USA

The Nordex Group has won an order for a 240 MW wind farm in Texas in USA to be installed in 2021. The project will be supplied with 50 N155/4.X turbines of the Delta4000 series and will operate with a rated power of 4.8 MW per wind turbine. The project and customer are undisclosed. With a 155 meter rotor diameter, the N155/4.X turbines are ideally suited to the site conditions of the project which enables the customer to achieve a low cost of energy.

The turbine N155/4.X, a variant of the Delta4000 series, is especially suitable for regions with lower turbulence and medium wind speeds. It is also suited to sites which are not subject to strict regulatory requirements for sound emissions. This applies to locations in large parts of the United States, Latin America, South Africa and Spain.

In addition to the N155/4.X, the Nordex Group now also offers the new rotor as an N155/5.X in the 5MW segment. The N155/5.X leverages already developed components of the current 5.X series – the N149/5.X and the N163/5.X – to boost annual energy production per wind turbine. This variant improves competitiveness in certain wind conditions or in situations where fewer wind turbines on a grid-constrained project result in a better overall cost of energy.

Scout Clean Energy Completes 130 MW Bitter Ridge Wind Farm

Colorado based renewable energy developer, owner and operator Scout Clean Energy has completed construction and successfully closed tax equity funding for the 130 Megawatt Bitter Ridge Wind Farm located in Jay County in Indiana. Scout commenced greenfield development of Bitter Ridge in 2016 and has successfully progressed the project through all permitting and procurement activities, commencing construction in August 2019. The Bitter Ridge wind farm is the fourth utility scale wind project to be constructed by the Scout team and will utilize the latest generation GE 2.82 MW wind turbine. Reaching commercial operations at Bitter Ridge will bring Scout’s operational portfolio of onshore wind energy generation to 843 MW spanning the three power markets of ERCOT, PJM and SPP with more than 4,000 MW in its active development pipeline across wind, solar PV, and battery storage.

According to the EPA’s Greenhouse Gas Equivalency Calculator, Bitter Ridge is predicted to offset over 292,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually and over 10 million metric tons during its operating life. Bitter Ridge’s production is expected to offset the CO2 emissions of 49,430 Hoosier homes’ electrical consumption annually.

As previously announced by Scout, a 15-year Power Purchase Agreement has been signed with Constellation, an Exelon company, for the long-term purchase of renewable energy and capacity generated by Bitter Ridge. Scout entered into a fixed-price balance-of-plant construction agreement with Mortenson Construction who completed the work on schedule and with excellent safety performance. The Bitter Ridge asset management and post-construction operations will be undertaken by Scout.

The completion of construction of Bitter Ridge follows the final commissioning of Scout’s 180 MW Heart of Texas wind farm in McCullough County in Texas earlier in 2020.
