Vandaag is de capital markets day.

72 Wind Turbines for 604 MW Kriegers Flak Wind Farm Installed

Jan De Nul Group installs a total of 72 wind turbines of 8.4MW each on behalf of Vattenfall Denmark. All together, these turbines will produce enough green electricity for the annual needs of approximately 600,000 Danish households. Approximately 4.5 months after the start of this installation campaign in January, Jan De Nul, Siemens Gamesa and Vattenfall deliver the 604 MW Kriegers Flak offshore wind farm.

The geographical location of the offshore wind farm offers extremely heterogeneous soil conditions with large lateral variability and boulders on the surface and below. Despite that, Jan De Nul managed to successfully deploy a Jack-Up Installation Vessel for the installation works.

In 2017 and 2018, Jan De Nul Group already designed, built and installed two large Gravity Based Foundations for the offshore high-voltage substations of this new offshore wind farm. Jan De Nul built both concrete structures of 8,000 and 10,000 tonnes on a floating pontoon in the port of Ostend (Belgium) and then towed them to Denmark. In the Baltic Sea, the crane vessel Rambiz installed both foundations on the seabed with the utmost precision.

The works have always been on schedule, thanks to the great teamwork! We are very proud to have helped Denmark in this giant leap in their energy transition.

Siemens Gamesa Bags 85 MW Wind Turbine Order from Spain

Siemens Gamesa has signed two new contracts that will strengthen its leadership in Spain, where it currently has nearly 15 GW installed, 53% of the country's total capacity. Specifically, a contract with Grupo Jorge to supply seven SG 5.0-145 wind turbines for a wind farm in Herrera de los Navarros (Zaragoza) and another contract, with a different customer, to supply ten turbines of the same model, also in the province of Zaragoza. The two contracts total 17 turbines and a capacity of 85 MW.

The Herrera de los Navarros wind farm is scheduled to come into operation in the second half of 2022 and the contract includes the maintenance of the turbines for a period of 15 years. The other wind farm will start operations in the first half of 2022 and includes maintenance of the wind turbines for 20 years.

The 17 nacelles that make up the two contracts will be assembled at Siemens Gamesa's plant in Ágreda (Soria), the gearboxes will be produced at the plants in Asteasu (Guipúzcoa), Lerma (Burgos) and the city of Burgos, and the electrical components will be produced at the factories in Reinosa (Cantabria), San Fernando de Henares (Madrid) and Benisanó (Valencia). Siemens Gamesa has nine plants in Spain employing 1,200 people, and more than 4,500 employees in total in the country.

The sum of the two wind farms will provide the area with enough clean energy to power nearly 70,000 homes, one fifth of the province of Zaragoza, and will prevent the annual emission of 224,000 tons of CO2, equivalent to the emissions of around 130,000 vehicles. To achieve these CO2 savings, it would be necessary to plant more than three million trees.

Siemens Starts Trials of Third eHighway in Germany

The eHighway system on the B 462 federal highway between Kuppenheim and Gaggenau has been successfully completed by the consortium of Siemens Mobility and SPL Powerlines Germany, handed over to the customer, and was officially opened in a ceremony today. The eHighway technology provided by Siemens Mobility supplies trucks with electricity, via an overhead contact line, that is used to directly power the truck and charge its batteries. The highway system in the Murg Valley, known as the “eWayBW”, makes it possible to test the overhead contact line technology for the first time on a federal highway with tight curves and bridges. Five trucks will be used on regular test runs in both directions along the roughly 3.4-kilometer route.

Siemens Mobility’s eHighway technology is currently being tested in three public field trials in Germany. In addition to the new system installed on the B 462 federal highway, pilot projects are running on the A5 federal autobahn between the Zeppelinheim/Cargo City South junction at the Frankfurt Airport and the Darmstadt/Weiterstadt junction, and on the A1 federal autobahn between the Reinfeld junction and Lübeck interchange.

The eWayBW field test, like the other two pilots in Germany, is funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety. In addition, the Federal Ministry for Transport and Digital Infrastructure supports the scaling of overhead contact lines for long-distance traffic in so-called innovation clusters. The National Platform for the Future of Mobility (NPM) recommends equipping 300 kilometers of autobahns in Germany with overhead contact lines by 2023 and electrifying a total of 4,000 kilometers by 2030 to help the country reach its climate target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector by 40 percent.

Siemens Gamesa Offshore Turbine Get Typhoon Resistance Certificate

Siemens Gamesa recently became one of the first turbine manufacturers worldwide to receive a second rotor-nacelle assembly IEC type certificate covering resistance to extreme wind conditions. Issued by TÜV NORD, the SG 11.0-200 DD offshore wind turbine joins the SG 8.0-167 DD offshore wind turbine with this certification. Both Siemens Gamesa machines are thus able to withstand Typhoon or T-class wind speeds as determined by the IEC reaching 57 meters per second for 10 minutes and three-second gusts of up to 79.8 meters per second.

As of today, over 1,200 units of the offshore Direct Drive platform are installed and operating across the globe, including in Asia Pacific on Formosa 1 project in Taiwan. The robustness of the installed fleet is demonstrated via availability rates across the 1,200 units of above 97% in calendar year 2020.

In addition to T-Class wind speed compliance, Siemens Gamesa is working closely with local authorities and certifying bodies to ensure that all applicable standards are considered. For example, the company is part of the international ACE (Alleviating Cyclone and Earthquake challenges for wind farms) Joint Industry Project. The initiative aims at gathering cross-industry experiences to align wind turbine design methodologies for extreme environmental conditions.

Siemens Gamesa has also been developing its offshore platform to operate in both high and low ambient temperatures, thus reducing thermal limitation and increasing annual energy production while preserving turbine lifetime. Those product features will contribute to the further expansion of offshore wind in Asia Pacific, where it is meant to play an important part in the decarbonization of society. In Japan, the government revealed late 2020 long-term and visionary objectives for the industry, with 30-45 GW to be installed by 2040.

The SG 11.0-200 DD turbine has a rated capacity of 11 megawatts (MW) and a 200-meter diameter rotor using 97-meter long Siemens Gamesa B97 IntegralBlades. The SG 8.0-167 DD wind turbine has a rated capacity of 8 megawatts (MW) and a 167-meter diameter rotor with a 167-meter diameter, using 81-meter long Siemens Gamesa B81 IntegralBlades. The two products utilize the same patented Siemens Gamesa Direct Drive generator technology. Both turbines, along with the larger SG 14-222 DD offshore wind turbine, are designed to sustain withstand extreme wind conditions such as those covered by T-Class compliance.

Siemens to Build Hydrogen Generation Plants in Wunsiedel

The official groundbreaking ceremony in Wunsiedel marked the start of construction of a hydrogen generation plant with a capacity of 8.75 megawatts. The facility will produce up to 1,350 tons of hydrogen per year using only renewable energy, for example from solar or wind power. Using the generated hydrogen in transportation and industry allows for CO 2 savings of up to 13,500 annually. Siemens Smart Infrastructure is the general contractor for the entire plant, with Siemens Financial Services participating in the equity financing as well as holding a share of 45 percent in the operating company WUN H2 GmbH. The electrolyzer will be supplied by Siemens Energy.

The plant will be constructed at Wunsiedel Energy Park and connected to the existing Siemens battery storage facility and adjacent industrial enterprises. These can use waste heat, or the oxygen split off during electrolysis. This connected infrastructure will serve as a model for the whole of Germany.

For the project in Wunsiedel, SFS, the financing arm of Siemens, is in charge of commercial project development and structuring the financing. SFS holds a 45 percent share in the project’s operating company WUN H2; Rießner Gase GmbH also holds 45 percent and Stadtwerke Wunsiedel (SWW) the remaining 10 percent. At the same time, SFS was able to implement non-recourse project financing, i.e. without counter-liability to the shareholders, with UmweltBank as an external lender to secure financing for the project.

If hydrogen is produced through the electrolysis of water by only using power from renewable energy sources for this process, it is referred to as “green”, i.e. carbon-free hydrogen. The Wunsiedel plant uses Siemens Energy’s most advanced electrolyzer

The hydrogen is delivered via truck trailers to local and regional end customers for local distribution, mainly in the regions of Upper Franconia, Upper Palatinate, Thuringia and Saxony as well as Western Bohemia (Czech Republic). The plant also helps alleviate grid bottlenecks and provides flexibility for the power grid. The option to build a public hydrogen filling station for trucks and buses at the same location will make it possible to create an offering for carbon-free heavy goods transportation as well as regional public transportation.

Siemens & Bernmobil Drive Sustainable Bus Transport in Bern

Siemens has been awarded a contract by the Swiss capital’s public transport company Bernmobil to supply charging infrastructure solutions for the operation of 14 new electric buses. These are to be deployed on Lines 19 and 21 beginning in early 2023. The project includes fast charging units at three terminal stations as well as charging infrastructure for the Eigerplatz bus depot. To optimize operations, a cloud-based depot management solution from Siemens will be used as software-as-a-service.

Three Siemens Sicharge UC 600 fast charging units, including a charging mast with a top-down pantograph, will be installed at the Elfenau, Blinzern (Line 19) and Bremgarten (Line 21) terminal stations. During their scheduled stops, the vehicles can be charged with a power of up to 450 kilowatts. The pantograph has a major advantage: The connection of the charging unit to the vehicle is fully automatic so nothing needs to be connected manually. The charging mast has a height of 6.5 meters and weighs 2.5 tons; with a footprint of 130 x 33 cm it is relatively compact.

At the Eigerplatz bus depot, Siemens will install seven Sicharge UC 200 fast charging units, each with three dispensers. This means that a total of 21 bus parking spaces can be equipped with electric charging infrastructure. The Siemens charging infrastructure, consisting of Sicharge UC charging centers, dispensers and CCS2 connection cables, will be installed by Siemens in the existing depot during ongoing operations.

To manage this complex system with several Sicharge UC dispensers per charging center, a digital depot management solution from Siemens will be used in the Eigerplatz bus garage. It is a cloud-based software-as-a-service (SaaS) offering. This means that the software will be operated and maintained by Siemens and made available to Bernmobil for use. Among other things, the system monitors all electrical currents, generates reports on charging operations, and enables efficient diagnostic and charging management.

Bernmobil is committed to driving the electrification of public local transport in the Swiss capital.

Siemens to Trail Hydrogen-Powered Train in Bavaria

The Bavarian State Ministers for Economic Affairs and for Transport support the testing in Bavaria of a hydrogen-powered train developed by Siemens Mobility GmbH. The two-car train is to be tested on the Augsburg - Füssen route, among others, beginning in mid-2023. The pilot operation in the rail network of Bayerische Regiobahn BRB is initially planned for 30 months. The hydrogen-powered train will be stationed in Augsburg during this time.

The hydrogen-powered train is being developed on the basis of the Mireo Plus H platform from Siemens Mobility. It is designed to operate on non-electrified rail lines and has a range of up to 800 kilometers. The main components of the hydrogen traction drive are two fuel cells mounted on the roof. The system uses the latest generation of batteries from the Saft company that are installed beneath the floor. The train will be presented to the public in the spring of 2022. The first test runs in Bavaria are planned for 2023, before the train officially enters passenger service in January 2024.

The development of alternative drives in rail transport is part of Siemens Mobility’s sustainability strategy. The company is a pioneer when it comes to sustainable mobility and will offer the successful Mireo regional train as both a hydrogen and a battery-powered unit. The well-known Mireo Plus H platform is being used but is being equipped with a new generation of batteries to further improve both performance and passenger comfort.

Continental & Siemens to Supply Overhead Line Electric Truck in EU

Continental’s development and production service provider, Continental Engineering Services and Siemens Mobility will collaborate in the development and production of current collectors for trucks, so called pantographs. The aim is to electrify key sections of the highway network with an overhead line system, and thus significantly reduce CO2 emissions from trucks, in line with EU regulation 2019/1242. The new partnership brings together the expertise of two worlds of technology: Siemens Mobility is a specialist in rail electrification, while Continental Engineering Services is a development and production service provider for sophisticated automotive technologies. Both companies are now pooling their expertise in order to achieve volume production of current collectors quickly, thus making them available for widespread use in Europe. The eHighway technology supplies trucks with electric drives (e.g., hybrid, fuel cell, or battery-powered electric trucks) on heavily frequented stretches of highway via an overhead cable. Trucks can drive completely electrically while also charging their batteries without consuming fuel. “We are transferring the principle of rail electrification to the road. The current collectors will be developed and produced in accordance with automotive standards. The partnership between Continental Engineering Services and Siemens Mobility is a major step toward climate-neutral freight transport,” explains Dr. Christoph Falk-Gierlinger, Managing Director of CES.

The eHighway technology developed by Siemens Mobility is already ready for use today. Now, it is just a matter of developing the current collectors, especially for trucks, so that they can be offered to commercial vehicle manufacturers cost-effectively and in any desired number of units.

The key to the eHighway is that not all highway kilometers need to be electrified. The “National Platform for the Future of Mobility,” an innovation initiative of the Federal Ministry of Transport, recommends that 4,000 kilometers of highway be equipped with overhead cable technology by 2030. This is because approximately around two thirds of fuel consumption by long-distance truck traffic on German highways takes place on the most frequently used 4,000 kilometers of the 13,000-kilometer-long network.
