Amsterdam - Vladimir Poetin heeft volgens het Britse ministerie van Defensie opnieuw een hoge officier uit zijn functie ontheven. Deze keer werd luitenant-generaal Sergei Kisel het slachtoffer, de commandant van eliteregiment het 1e Garde Tank Leger. Hij had de opdracht om Charkov, de tweede stad van Oekraïne, in te nemen. Hij is volgens het Britse ministerie geschorst omdat hij „gefaald heeft” zijn opdracht te vervullen.

Het 1e Tank Leger is niet zomaar een regiment. De geschiedenis van de eenheid gaat terug naar de Slag om Stalingrad in de Tweede Wereldoorlog. De garde werd in 1999 opgeheven, maar in 2014 weer als elite-eenheid opgetuigd. De verovering van Charkov was een van de belangrijkste doelen van de invasie in Oekraïne eind februari. Deze week werd bekend dat Russische troepen bij de stad zich teruggetrokken hebben, nadat ze er weken niet in slaagden door de Oekraïense linies heen te breken.

Woede

Luitenant-generaal Kisel is niet de enige Russische officier die de afgelopen weken met de woede van Poetin te maken kreeg. De commandant van de Russische Zwarte Zee-vloot, vice-admiraal Igor Osipov, zou ook geschorst zijn. Dit nadat de Moskva, het vlaggenschip van de Russische vloot, door Oekraïne tot zinken werd gebracht. „De afgelopen weken heeft Rusland hooggeplaatste commandanten ontslagen, waarvan gedacht wordt dat ze in de beginfase van de invasie van Oekraïne ondermaats gepresteerd hebben”, liet het ministerie in een persverklaring optekenen.

Volgens het Britse ministerie van Defensie zou ook de positie van Valeri Gerasimov, de hoogste officier van het Russische leger, onder druk staan. Volgens het ministerie is het onduidelijk of „generaal Gerasimov nog het vertrouwen van president Poetin geniet.”

Weinig goeds

Het Britse ministerie voorspelt weinig goeds voor het Russische officierenkorps. „Een cultuur van ’de zondebok zoeken’ en ’cover ups’ heerst binnen de Russische strijdkrachten en veiligheidsdiensten. Vele officieren die betrokken waren bij de invasie van Oekraïne zullen in toenemende mate afgeleid worden door pogingen om hun persoonlijke verantwoordelijkheid voor de Russische tegenslagen te ontlopen.”

Die cultuur zou volgen de Britten ook zijn weerslag hebben op de Russische oorlogsvoering. „Dat zal waarschijnlijk het gecentraliseerde Russische model voor de bevelvoering verder onder druk zetten, omdat officieren belangrijke besluiten doorschuiven naar hun superieuren.”

Microsoft’s records of Mariupol attacks will be used at future ‘Nuremberg trials’

Records of Ukrainian hospital bombings automatically recorded by Microsoft will be used at future 'Nuremberg trials' of Russian war criminals, the company's president has said.

The time and date of attacks are being logged by artificial intelligence tools using live satellite images of occupied Ukraine and the evidence will be made available to prosecutors.

Massacres at locations such as Mariupol’s maternity hospital, destroyed by Russian air strikes in early March, can be captured by commercial satellites and analysed to determine who was responsible.

In a speech in London, Microsoft president Brad Smith said: "It's important to ensure that we create the foundation to do what was done after World War Two, at a place like Nuremberg.

“That's why we're providing the technology platform free of charge for the prosecutor for the UN and the International Criminal Court.”

A captured Russian soldier has already pleaded guilty to murder and war crimes in a Ukrainian court after murdering a 62-year-old civilian cyclist in eastern Ukraine at the outset of the invasion.

Microsoft has given Ukraine $100m of help moving its government IT onto servers outside the country so its public sector can continue to operate.

Mr Smith said cloud computing servers are the modern equivalent of Winston Churchill’s bunker during the Blitz.

Referring to the Cabinet War Rooms, he said German bombing during the Second World War “changed where communications needed to live”.

Mr Smith also compared Microsoft's computer antivirus to the RAF's early warning radar network during the Battle of Britain.

Windows Defender software gives Microsoft early warning of Russian cyberattacks as they begin so the company can alert the Ukrainian government, he explained.

Mr Smith also revealed that Russia has been coordinating its cyberattacks on Ukrainian organisations with ground offensives, appearing to refer to the Russian assault on Hostomel Airport, home to the world’s largest aeroplane, the Antonov An-226 Mriya.

He said: “We would see how they would go from trying to disrupt the network for a city around an airport to then trying to attack and take possession of the airport."

Just 20km from Kiev, Hostomel Airport was the focus of a Russian offensive in February aimed at securing a vital transport node near Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky’s capital.

At the same time as attack helicopters swarmed over the airport Russian hackers deployed so-called ‘wiper’ malicious software which deleted files on any computers it infected. Denial-of-service attacks, which force crucial websites offline, were also observed by Western cyber security companies at the time.

Analysts had expected Russia to use its cyber warfare units to paralyse Ukraine’s infrastructure, something that did not appear to have happened on a wide scale.

Microsoft’s confirmation that Russian cyber warfare in Ukraine has been concentrated on small-scale tactical objectives is likely to reshape Western perceptions of Russia’s hackers.

Comparisons had been drawn between Russia’s conventional military failures and the lack of high-impact cyber attacks.

A Russian attempt to hack a power station in eastern Ukraine with a malicious software ‘bomb’ was caught in its early stages and halted in April.

Pro-war Russians are increasingly critical of the Ukraine conflict

IGA, Latvia — Battlefield setbacks in Ukraine are prompting mounting criticisms of the Russian military among Russians who support the war but are increasingly frustrated with the way it is being fought.

Military analysts, veterans, mercenaries and journalists are among those who have begun speaking out on social media and state-run television against the blunders and shortcomings that continue to plague Russia’s efforts in Ukraine, even after the Russian military narrowed its goals to the capture of territory in the eastern Donbas region.

Thousands of Russians have been detained or harassed because they oppose President Vladimir Putin’s decision to go to war. The pro-war critics are different — they support the war but are frustrated with the pace of progress and in many instances want Putin to get tougher.

“Dear Vladimir Vladimirovich, please decide, are we fighting a war or are we jacking off?” Alexander Arutyunov, a military veteran who blogs under the name Razvedos, asked on his Telegram account. “If we are fighting we need to fight! And we need to hit everything. There is no other way to win in a war.”

Others bluntly question whether Russia can win the war without radical adjustments to its tactics or the mass mobilization of Russian reservists. A British intelligence report earlier this week estimated that Russia has lost up to a third of the 190,000-strong force originally deployed. Russia has also steadily been sending reinforcements, including regular contract forces alongside reservists, conscripts and mercenaries, for a current total of around 167,000, according to a Ukrainian estimate on Wednesday.

Putin unleashes ‘Terminator’ tanks in Ukraine’s Donbas amid Russian military setbacks

Terminators can engage multiple targets at once and on different heights

Russia has reportedly deployed armoured fighting vehicles known as the Terminator tanks in Ukraine as Moscow suffered military losses in the key Donbas region.

“Together with tank platoons, BMPTs [nicknamed Terminator] are involved in the fire destruction of Ukrainian positions, armored vehicles, and crews of anti-tank missile systems,” a military source told state-owned news agency Ria Novosti on Wednesday.

The military vehicles, which can engage multiple targets at once and on different height levels, were purportedly seen rolling into Severodonetsk in the Luhansk region in several videos.

The tank support combat vehicles or BMPTs have established their utility against the enemy and would enable the Russian army to form tactics and determine their place in armoured groups, the source said. Experience on the battlefield with Ukraine has shown that Terminators are required to intensify Russia’s combat stability, they added.

The vehicles, which were first demonstrated in 2013 at the Russian Arms Expo and then at the Victory Day parade in 2020, were deployed in war-torn Syria in 2017 after its president Bashar Assad met with Russian chief of staff General Valery Gerasimov

Ukraine officials give conflicting accounts of attack on Russian train

KYIV, May 18 (Reuters) - Ukraine's territorial defence force said on Wednesday its fighters had blown up an armoured train carrying Russian troops, but an adviser to President Volodymyr Zelinskiy later said the attack had been confined to rails near the train.

Reuters could not independently verify the defence force's assertion, posted on Facebook, that it had carried out the attack in the occupied southern Ukrainian city of Melitopol.

The city lies in the region of Zaporizhzhia and in a belt of southern Ukrainian land that was occupied by Russian forces after they invaded on Feb. 24.

The defence force - the reservist branch of Ukraine's armed forces - said in an online posting that explosives had detonated under a rail car carrying military personnel. It did not elaborate on the extent of the damage.

But several hours later, presidential adviser Oleksiy Arestovych gave a conflicting account, saying Ukrainian forces had blown up the tracks ahead of the train.

"The partisans got it, although they did not blow up the armoured train itself," he said in a video posted on social media, saying the Russians "got off lightly."

Arestovych said the incident showed that the partisan movement was actively disrupting Russian forces.

Ukrainian news reports say partisans have been operating actively in Melitopol. The town's mayor was taken away by Russian troops for several days in March before being released.

KHARKIV, Ukraine (AP) — A celebrated Ukrainian medic recorded her time in Mariupol on a data card no bigger than a thumbnail, smuggled out to the world in a tampon. Now she is in Russian hands, at a time when Mariupol itself is on the verge of falling.

Yuliia Paievska is known in Ukraine as Taira, a moniker from the nickname she chose in the World of Warcraft video game. Using a body camera, she recorded 256 gigabytes of her team’s frantic efforts over two weeks to bring people back from the brink of death. She got the harrowing clips to an Associated Press team, the last international journalists in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol, as they left in a rare humanitarian convoy.

Russian soldiers captured Taira and her driver the next day, March 16, one of many forced disappearances in areas of Ukraine now held by Russia. Russia has portrayed Taira as working for the nationalist Azov Battalion, in line with Moscow’s narrative that it is attempting to “denazify” Ukraine. But the AP found no such evidence, and friends and colleagues said she had no links to Azov.

The military hospital where she led evacuations of the wounded is not affiliated with the battalion, whose members have spent weeks defending a sprawling steel plant in Mariupol. The footage Taira recorded itself testifies to the fact that she tried to save wounded Russian soldiers as well as Ukrainian civilians.

McDonald’s era in Russia coming to a close, restaurants sold

McDonald’s is selling all of its restaurants in Russia 30 years after the burger chain became a powerful symbol of easing Cold War tensions between the United States and Soviet Union.

The company shuttered hundreds of locations in March after Russia invaded Ukraine, which has cost McDonald’s about $55 million per month. On Monday, McDonald’s announced it would sell those stores and leave Russia.

An existing McDonald’s licensee, Alexander Govor, who operates 25 restaurants in Siberia, has agreed to buy McDonald’s 850 Russian restaurants and operate them under a new name, the Chicago burger giant said Thursday.

McDonald’s did not disclose the terms of the sale. Last year, McDonald’s Russian operations contributed 9% of the company’s total annual sales, or around $2 billion.

McDonald’s was among the first Western consumer brands to enter Russia in 1990. Its large, gleaming store near Pushkin Square in Moscow, which opened shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall, signaled a new era of optimism in the wake of the Cold War.

It’s the first time the company has “de-arched,” or exited a major market. It plans to start removing golden arches and other symbols and signs with the company’s name. McDonald’s said it will also will maintain its trademarks in Russia and take steps to enforce them if necessary.

The sale announced Thursday is subject to regulatory approval, but is expected to close within a few weeks, McDonald’s said.

Govor, a licensee since 2015, has also agreed to retain McDonald’s 62,000 Russian employees for at least two years on equivalent terms. Govor also agreed to pay the salaries of McDonald’s corporate employees until the sale closes.

Govor is also half-owner of Neftekhimservis, a construction investor that owns an oil refinery in Siberia. He is also on the board of directors of Inrusinvest, whose projects include a medical center and a Park Inn hotel in the Siberian city of Novokuznetsk.

It’s unclear if other U.S. chains will follow McDonald’s lead and leave Russia. McDonald’s owned 84% of its Russian stores, which gave it more control over operations than many of its rivals whose stores are owned by franchisees.

Starbucks’ 130 Russian stores have been closed since early March. Its franchisee in the country, Kuwait-based Alshaya Group, is continuing to pay its 2,000 Russian employees.

Rusland wil de toegang tot de zeehavens in Oekraïne pas vrijgeven als alle sancties tegen het land worden opgeheven. Dat zegt het Russische ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken na een oproep van secretaris-generaal Antonio Guterres van de Verenigde Naties (VN). Die vroeg de blokkade van de graanexport uit Oekraïne te stoppen, zodat een wereldwijde voedselcrisis afgewend kan worden.
Het was de Russische viceminister van Buitenlandse Zaken Andrei Rudenko die de verklaring aflegde, volgens het Russische staatspersbureau TASS. Volgens hem vereist de oplossing voor de voedselcrisis de opheffing van de anti-Russische sancties van de VS en de EU. Die belemmeren immers de vrije handel, klinkt het.
Het volstaat niet om een ??beroep te doen op de Russische Federatie, er moet ook aandacht besteed worden aan het hele scala van factoren die de huidige voedselcrisis hebben veroorzaakt”, aldus Rudenko. “Allereerst zijn dat de sancties die door de Verenigde Staten en de Europese Unie aan Rusland zijn opgelegd. Die interfereren met de normale vrije handel in voedingsproducten, waaronder tarwe en kunstmest.”

Meststoffen
Guterres onderhandelt al enkele weken over de kwestie met Rusland, Oekraïne, de VS, de EU en Turkije. Naast het vrijgeven van de Oekraïense havens vraagt hij ook aan het Westen om Russische meststoffen opnieuw toe te laten op de wereldmarkten.

De secretaris-generaal waarschuwde voor “het schrikbeeld van wereldwijde voedseltekorten in de komende maanden”. Hij zei dat de oorlog in Oekraïne de factoren die bijdragen tot de wereldwijde voedselcrisis heeft versterkt en versneld: de klimaatverandering, de Covid-19-pandemie en de groeiende ongelijkheid tussen rijke en arme landen. De crisis “dreigt tientallen miljoenen mensen in een situatie van voedselonzekerheid, ondervoeding en verhongering te duwen” en “zou jaren kunnen duren”, waarschuwde hij.

De Russische McDonald's-uitbater Alexander Govor neemt alle Russische restaurants over van het Amerikaanse fastfoodconcern. Hij is van plan om ze onder een andere naam voort te zetten. McDonald’s kondigde enkele dagen terug al aan uit Rusland te vertrekken vanwege de oorlog in Oekraïne.
