SAN FRANCISCO, DETROIT and REDMOND, Wash. – January 19, 2021 – Cruise and General Motors on Tuesday announced they have entered a long-term strategic relationship with Microsoft to accelerate the commercialization of self-driving vehicles. The companies will bring together their software and hardware engineering excellence, cloud computing capabilities, manufacturing know-how and partner ecosystem to transform transportation to create a safer, cleaner, and more accessible world for everyone.

“Our mission to bring safer, better, and more affordable transportation to everyone isn’t just a tech race - it’s also a trust race,” said Cruise CEO Dan Ammann. “Microsoft, as the gold standard in the trustworthy democratization of technology, will be a force multiplier for us as we commercialize our fleet of self-driving, all-electric, shared vehicles.”

To unlock the potential of cloud computing for self-driving vehicles, Cruise will leverage Azure, Microsoft’s cloud and edge computing platform, to commercialize its unique autonomous vehicle solutions at scale. Microsoft, as Cruise’s preferred cloud provider, will also tap into Cruise’s deep industry expertise to enhance its customer-driven product innovation and serve transportation companies across the globe through continued investment in Azure.

Microsoft will join General Motors, Honda and institutional investors in a combined new equity investment of more than $2 billion in Cruise, bringing the post-money valuation of Cruise to $30 billion.

"Advances in digital technology are redefining every aspect of our work and life, including how we move people and goods,” said Satya Nadella, CEO, Microsoft. “As Cruise and GM's preferred cloud, we will apply the power of Azure to help them scale and make autonomous transportation mainstream.”

In addition, GM will work with Microsoft as its preferred public cloud provider to accelerate its digitization initiatives, including collaboration, storage, artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities. GM will explore opportunities with Microsoft to streamline operations across digital supply chains, foster productivity and bring new mobility services to customers faster.

Dit zijn de momenten waarop ik toch weer verliefd word op het aandeel TomTom. Marktpotentieel is groot. Verdienmodel wordt de crux. TomTom is nu de engine, onafhankelijke leverancier van informatie en afhankelijke dataverwerker.

HG this is the moment. Zakendoen met Microsoft. LinkedIn boden ze ook 100% premie. Dus EUR20, waarvan de helft in cash en de rest in aandelen MSFT als ze dat willen. Ga lekker zeilen met corrie.

Nee nu worden de allianties gemaakt, dan moet je er stevig bijzitten. EUR20 per aandeel is fair wat mij betreft.

Er speelt iets, je denkt toch niet dat de sluipstijging de afgelopen maanden obv de cijfers was?

Weer een TT-traditie gebroken. Zo jammer!
Vandaag geen koersstijgende voorspelling waarvoor de "grote inkoper" aan het eind van de dag zorg draagt.

Net als gisteren met 12K en 46K wordt de koers van 9,43 naar 9,36 gezet
Dat kan niet anders dan koersmanipulatie zijn.
AFM en VEB letten jullie wel op?

Cruise will be able to use Microsoft’s Azure cloud-computing platform to manage its self-driving vehicle network. Azure will handle data and mapping, as well as enable cars to communicate with Cruise’s back office and customer-facing app for ride-hailing. It’s a vital piece of software infrastructure that Cruise needs to build its planned commercial robotaxi service.

DETROIT (ANP/BLOOMBERG) - Microsoft gaat flink investeren in autonoom rijdende auto's. Het Amerikaanse softwarebedrijf steekt samen met autofabrikant General Motors (GM) 2 miljard dollar in de start-up Cruise, dat voor het grootste deel al in handen is van GM. Ook autofabrikant Honda doet mee aan de investeringsronde in het bedrijf.

"Microsoft is een geweldige aanvulling op het team, op weg naar een toekomst zonder ongelukken, uitlaatgassen en files", zegt GM-topvrouw Mary Barra. Met de samenwerking kan Cruise een beroep doen op de expertise van Microsoft op het gebied van de opslag en verwerking van data. Zo kan het een beroep doen op Microsofts clouddienst Azure, dat het nodig heeft om een commerciële zelfrijdende taxidienst op te zetten.

Door sterker in te zetten op technologie voor zelfrijdende auto's volgt het softwareconcern het voorbeeld van andere grote Amerikaanse techbedrijven. De samenwerking moet de concurrentie aangaan met Waymo van Google-moeder Alphabet. Eerder deze maand hintte het Zuid-Koreaanse automerk Hyundai bovendien op een samenwerking met Apple op het gebied van zelfrijdende auto's, hoewel het bedrijf verklaringen daarover later weer introk.

Beleggers beloonden het nieuws in de Amerikaanse ochtendhandel met een plus van bijna 7 procent voor het aandeel van General Motors. Met de investering wordt Cruise gewaardeerd op 30 miljard dollar.

However, Microsoft indicates that all applications that use the Bing Maps API will continue to function normally, except for older versions of Windows 10 (released before Windows 10 v1703). Microsoft notes that the drastic change should make the service even better.

Dutchy Ron, dit is inderdaad een super deal voor zowel GM, Microsoft enTOMTOM. Microsoft pompt maar liefst 2 biljoen in GM's Cruise object. Het moet gek zijn als TT hier niet van kan mee eten. Volgens mij is GM ook de steeds geheim gehouden OEM uit de USA.

GM bouwt eigen HD maps

That’s why it makes perfect sense to see GM’s Cruise Automation do more in HD mapping, as the WSJ reports, with a new role being recruited to head up a dedicated HD mapping team within the company, which the automaker acquired last year. GM’s mapping efforts via Cruise will eventually cover over 100 cities, the job offer says, and could help to give the company an edge over would-be rivals in the autonomous car tech field, including Alphabet’s Waymo.

There are a range of companies working on HD mapping for self-driving cars, including Ford-backed Civil Maps and HERE, the mapping service co-owned by Daimler, BMW and Audi following its acquisition from Nokia. Likewise, Mobileye is working on real-time mapping solutions for autonomous in tandem with HERE. Many automakers seem content to leave HD mapping to partners in the supply chain, rather than something they do in-house, but it becomes a more important piece of the puzzle to own if you want to create a solution you can offer turn-key to other would-be driverless vehicle operators.

The effort to enter mapping may be relatively new to GM, but the company has some advantages, including a large number of active vehicles on the road equipped with the advanced sensors needed for HD mapping, thanks to advanced driver assistance (ADAS) features on GM cars. GM is also rapidly growing its fleet of Cruise test Chevy Bolt EV cars, which could help with the efforts in those cities where they operate.

GM komt nu denk ik tot de conclusie dat ze daar de tijd niet voor hebben, dus waarom het wiel opnieuw uitvinden en tijd (time to market) verliezen....... de concurrentie versnelt ook ..... dus men kan niet nog 4jr investeren in HD maps. Voor Ford geldt hetzelfde .... die investeren in Civil Maps maar ook daar hoor je weinig meer over de laatste tijd.
