Audi to recall further diesel models in Germany

AUDI AG will recall approximately 64,000 further vehicles with V-TDI engines into the workshops. Following the approval of Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority, half of the eight recalls for cars with V-TDI engines will now be implemented. This corresponds to about two thirds of the approximately 151,000 vehicles in Germany covered by the Euro 6 emissions standard. With its decision, the KBA is approving the solution proposed by Audi for an update of the engine software in three further cases. This affects approximately 103,500 vehicles of the A6, A7 Sportback and A8 model ranges, as well as the Q5 and SQ5 TDI SUVs. Just like the A6 and A7 Sportback models with 200 kW (272 hp), which were approved in mid-November, these models are also powered by a V6 TDI engine.

These technical solutions involve the removal of a software component from the engine management system. At the same time, the workshop visit will be used for regular quality measures in order to renew sensor components of individual model variants. The update is always free of charge for Audi customers and will have no negative impact on fuel consumption, CO2 emissions, engine output, maximum torque, noise emissions or the lifetime of the exhaust aftertreatment system. This software update is a mandatory recall. Audi is therefore contacting all affected vehicle owners and requesting that they get in touch with their authorized workshop or dealership.

Audi give nod to start production in Algeria

AUDI AG and the longstanding Audi importer SOVAC SPA opened the assembly of three models in Algeria. As of now, the Audi A3 Sportback, the A3 Sedan and the Audi Q2 will drive off the assembly line in Relizane, the capital of the province of the same name. Production is initially planned for an annual capacity of approximately 3,000 cars of the Audi brand. The SOVAC Production S.P.A. Algerie plant has been producing Volkswagen Group automobiles since 2017.

The production line for the local production of the Audi A3 and Q2 model series was started by Peter Will, Head of Planning and Steering of CKD/MKD/SKD Projects at AUDI AG, and Mourad Oulmi, CEO of SOVAC S.P.A.. “This entry into the Group’s multi-brand factory is a logical step into the Algerian growth market,” stated Will. “By specifically training local employees, we are ensuring Audi quality and utilizing synergies with the other Group brands in production and logistics, laying the foundation for continued growth in North Africa.”

Mr Mourad Oulmi, CEO of SOVAC S.P.A., said that “We are very proud that we will produce premium automobiles for the first time with Audi in Algeria, thus meeting the demand from our customers. I am particularly grateful to Audi, which has been working for months to relaunch the brand in the Algerian market together with Sovac. After more than ten years of partnership, we are entering a new era of cooperation.”

Next generation of combustion engine cars to be its last - Volkswagen

VOA News reported that German auto giant Volkswagen will begin rolling out its last generation of combustion engine cars in 2026, in its latest green pledge as it looks to turn the corner on the "dieselgate" emissions cheating scandal. The carmaker, which last month announced EUR 44 billion electric offensive by 2023, said it would phase out its diesel and petrol cars as it looks to meet the emissions targets of the 2015 Paris climate deal by 2050.

Mr Michael Jost, Volkswagen's strategy chief, told an industry conference that the firm's employees were working on "the last platform for vehicles that aren't CO2 neutral". He said that "We're gradually fading out combustion engines to the absolute minimum.”

Volkswagen denies allegations chairman knew early about emissions cheating

Auto News reported that Volkswagen has denied allegations that Chairman Hans Dieter Poetsch knew about the automaker's emissions test cheating almost three months before US authorities made it public in September 2015. VW said in a statement on Sunday that it had been aware of the allegations for some time. "The presentation by the witness P. is emphatically rejected as inaccurate. The diesel issue was the subject of a number of discussions with Poetsch in the summer of 2015. However, none of these discussions had the content and quality which could have made capital markets law relevant for Mr Poetsch. Until the publication of the Notice of Violation by the US authorities on September 18, 2015 it did not have sufficiently concrete indication of a situation that could be share price sensitive.”

Citing internal documents from investigators, German weekly Bild am Sonntag reported that Poetsch, VW's finance head at the time, learned about the company's violations of the rules in late June 2015. The paper cites a confidential presentation from the VW legal department, available to investigators in proceedings about the automaker's alleged market manipulation. A presentation called "Sacramento" dated June 24, 2015 stated that US emissions rules were being violated and that the company may also have breached its supervisory obligations. Testimony from a leading VW lawyer, who is referred to as "witness P", said Poetsch received the presentation on June 29, 2015, the paper said. Poetsch was also informed then that 600,000 vehicles in the US were affected and that the financial risk for VW stood at EUR 35 billion

Plaintiffs in a market manipulation lawsuit in Germany say Volkswagen failed in its duty to inform investors about the potential financial implications of the emissions test cheating, which has so far cost the company 27.4 billion euros in penalties and fines.

Volkswagen to increase price by up to 3% from January

German luxury carmaker Volkswagen last week said it will increases prices across its product range by 3% due to rising input cost. The price hike will be effective from January 2019. It said “Following dynamic changes within the economy and rising input costs followed by a depreciating rupee, there has been a foreseen requirement to increase prices in the passenger vehicle segment.”

Steffen Knapp, Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars says, “Over the last few months, we have been facing several fluctuations within the economy particularly the rise in input costs. At Volkswagen, we have tried our best to absorb the increasing costs but in order to maintain quality standards that a Volkswagen customer expects, this is an essential move."

Audi deliveries remain down on last year due to exceptional situation

Global deliveries of the Four Rings in November fell by 16.7 percent year-on-year to around 132,650 automobiles. In Europe, extraordinary effects due to the switch to the WLTP test cycle along with the challenging phase-in and phase-out scenario as part of the Audi model initiative continue to affect sales. As a result, the company delivered 33.9 percent fewer units in Europe last month than in the same month in 2017. Deliveries from the Ingolstadt-based automaker also fell 9.1 percent in North America on account of imminent model changeovers. By contrast, China continued to grow (+2.7%). Cumulative global sales since January were down 2.4 percent on the corresponding period of 2017 at around 1,657,950 units.

Mr Bram Schot, interim CEO and Board Member for Sales and Marketing at AUDI AG said that “We are going through a very challenging phase for our company which is adversely affecting our operating business. We are working intensely on the homologation of our engine/transmission variants and already have a sales portfolio running into three figures. At the same time we are laying down important markers for the future with our model initiative.”

In China, the company set a new record-breaking figure. The brand’s current model range posted sales of 57,721 units in China in November, surpassing the same month of the previous year by 2.7 percent. In the middle of the month, the Ingolstadt-based automaker celebrated its 30th anniversary with local partner First Automotive Works (FAW) and set out joint plans for the future: Audi wants to increase its local portfolio to more than ten models through 2022. As early as 2019, the Audi Q2 L e-tron, the brand’s first electric car exclusively for the Chinese market, will go into production. Sales of the A4 L, another model developed specially for China, rose sharply in November (+20.3% to 13,842 cars). Audi in China has already delivered more than 148,000 units of the A4L to customers in the year to date. In total, 597,451 customers (+13.0%) in the Middle Kingdom chose a model from the Four Rings in the period January through November a new record-breaking figure.

In Europe, the challenging sales situation associated with the switch to WLTP and the ongoing model changeovers continues. Last month, Audi’s sales on the home continent fell 33.9 percent year-on-year to around 43,850 units. In Germany, the company delivered 15,706 automobiles in November, a fall of 27.0 percent. Over the coming months this strained situation is set to continue. As such, AUDI AG expects sales figures to remain volatile. On full-year-guidance the company assumes global deliveries will be virtually on par with the prior-year level.

Volkswagen opens highly advanced 3-d printing centre

The Volkswagen brand’s Toolmaking unit is adding a highly advanced 3-D printing centre to its facilities in Wolfsburg. With the opening of the centre, the unit is bringing the most highly advanced generation of 3-D printers to the Volkswagen Group, which will allow the production of complex vehicle parts in the future. In addition, with the new centre, Toolmaking is implementing a key point of the pact for the future concluded in 2016 and expanding its production competences with subsidies from the Innovation Fund II.

The new generation of 3-D printers developed in cooperation with the US manufacturer HP is the most modern within the Volkswagen Group and is based on the binder jetting process, which supplements the previous selective laser melting (SLM) process. Binder jetting not only makes metallic 3-D printing considerably easier but also faster. In future, it will be possible to manufacture production parts in addition to prototypes.

At the 3-D printing centre, which has a floor space of 3,100 m², toolmakers, planners and research team members cooperate closely on the development of new products and processes. Within the framework of the pact for the future, a new additive manufacturing unit providing 11 future- oriented jobs has been established.

Volkswagen to build 1 million NEVs yearly in China

Gasgoo reported that on December 11, Volkswagen showed its three new PHEV members, the Touareg PHEV, the Magotan GTE Concept and the Tayron GTE Concept. In 2018, VW brand introduced no less than nine new models and launched the “Move Forward” initiative. In the coming 12 months, the brand’s NEV models will be doubled to six. At the PHEV workshop, it is revealed that Volkswagen is ambitious to build 1 million new energy vehicles (NEVs) per year in China by 2025. Consumers will have wide choice of BEV versions and all new models are expected to be fully connected from 2019 on.

The Germany brand divides its NEV initiative in China into three phases, which starts with locally-produced or imported PHEV or GTE models. By 2020, VW’s NEV full range in China will boast at least 10 NEVs and the local NEV production will be up to 300,000. At the third phase, the automaker points out that all BEVs will be built on its innovative vehicle architecture, the MEB platform in 2020/2021 and features new design as well as enhanced user experience.

In order to realize its ambitious sales target, VW needs to build a strong and flexible NEV production network. The company’s next step is to build up a global NEV production network. In the future, the automaker will have seven NEV production sites in China, one in the USA, and ten in Europe.

© VW
De I.D.

VW expects new EV platform will give it an edge over rivals

Auto News reported that VW, Audi, Skoda and Seat brands will launch 27 models based on the MEB architecture. Volkswagen said that the MEB platform that will underpin its ID electric-vehicle family will be even more scalable than the MQB architecture used for 80 percent of the group’s combustion engine cars. Because of that flexibility, MEB, which is a German abbreviation for Modular Electric Toolkit, could give VW a decisive edge over industry competitors when it comes to economies of scale.

Mr Tino Fuhrmann, project leader and head of the MEB model line during a presentation at VW’s factory in Dresden, Germany said that “This is a platform to generate volume by using the same parts in a wide variety of models. We have less variance than MQB, which is something we needed.”

Mr Fuhrmann said that “Those benefits were possible because Fuhrmann and his team tapped into the expertise VW has gained from years of using MQB, which is short for modular transverse matrix. The architecture is utilized in millions of VW Group combustion engine cars ranging in size from the VW Polo small hatchback to the 4900mm-long Skoda Superb sedan. All that we know from MQB, we put into MEB to get the best scale possible.”

By the end of 2022, the VW, Audi, Skoda and Seat brands will have launched 27 MEB-based models. VW Group expects to build about 10 million MEB vehicles over the life cycle of the first-generation architecture.

Volkswagen hit by new scandal - sold over 6000 unlicensed cars

Economic Times reported that not so long after the infamous dieselgate scandal, Volkswagen has once again landed itself into another major scandal by selling thousands of unlicensed cars to the public. The major risk here is the company has no legal documentations of what exactly wrong with these cars. The German carmaker has sold at least 6700 pre production cars which did not meet the regulations of Europe and North America, as per a German media Handelsblatt.

The report mentioned that Volkswagen has admitted to the wrongdoing to Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority, and the agency demanded a recall of the affected models that were sold between 2006-2018.

Following the order Volkswagen has begun recall of those 6700 units that are on road, however, company has not disclosed what action it is planning to take afterwards.

Of this lot, Volkswagen admitted of delivering close to 4000 vehicles in Germany and the remaining were sold in European countries and North America.

What has made the situation worse is the revelation of the fact by Der Spiegel that Herbert Diess, CEO of VW Group, was aware of the wrongdoing since 2016 when he headed the Volkswagen brand. Surprisingly, for the two long years the automaker remained successful in hiding the issue from regulatory bodies and kept selling vehicles without proper licencing.

The major risk here is the company has no legal documentations of what exactly wrong with these cars. In industry parlance, pre-production cars are often termed as test vehicles that are retained by the factory. They are mainly used to reveal the design of the vehicles and then unceremoniously crushed.

Volkswagen Group boost worldwide deliveries in 11 months

From January to November, the Volkswagen Group boosted worldwide deliveries by 1.8 percent to 9.92 million vehicles. Despite a tense market environment with stagnating overall markets, a deliveries record for 2018 as a whole is therefore within reach. In November, the Volkswagen Group delivered a total of 940,900 vehicles throughout the world, corresponding to a fall of 5.4 percent compared with the prior-year month. Thanks to further progress with the WLTP changeover of the model range, deliveries in Europe were affected less severely in November. At 3.0 percent, the fall compared with the prior-year month was considerably lower than in the two preceding months.

Dr Christian Dahlheim, Head of Group Sales said that “The rise in worldwide deliveries in the course of the year is a very respectable result. Although the volume target is no longer our top priority, high volumes allow us to achieve economies of scale. In November, there was a reduction in the effect of WLTP in Europe. We are confident that we will be able to close 2018 with a figure slightly above the previous record level of 2017 despite the challenging market environment.“

The Volkswagen Group brands made further progress with the changeover of their model range to the new WLTP test cycle. In Europe, where the fall in deliveries compared with the prior-year month was lower in November, at 3.0 percent, than in the two preceding months, 353,000 vehi- cles were handed over to customers. Both in Western Europe and in the home market of Ger- many, WLTP effects were less pronounced in November. In Western Europe, 283,100 vehicles were handed over to customers, 3.9 percent fewer than in November 2017. In Germany, 106,800 vehi- cles were delivered to customers (-4.9 percent). There were positive developments in the region of Central and Eastern Europe in November. Deliveries reached 70,000 vehicles, a rise of 0.9 percent compared with the previous year. This development was especially driven by the Russian market, with 22,900 deliveries (+22.8 percent). In Europe, the Volkswagen Group delivered 4.1 million vehicles from January to November, 1.8 percent more than in the comparable prior-year period.

In North America, the Volkswagen Group delivered 79,300 vehicles to customers in November, representing a fall of 6.2 percent compared with the previous year. While the markets of the USA (-8.1 percent) and Mexico (-5.4 percent) recorded falls compared with the previous year, a rise of 3.1 percent was achieved in Canada.

The region of South America developed positively in November compared with the previous year. 50,400 vehicles were handed over to customers, a rise of 5.4 percent. In the month under review, Brazil remained the main driver of growth in the region with 38,200 vehicles delivered (+22.3 per- cent). It was possible to compensate for the significant fall of 47.9 percent to 5,800 vehicles in Argentina as a result of the difficult economic environment.

In the Asia-Pacific region, deliveries in November declined by 6.8 percent to 426,800 vehicles. As in previous months, the tariff dispute with the USA had a marked impact on the overall market. The resulting reluctance of Chinese consumers to purchase vehicles led to a fall in deliveries in November to 399,500 vehicles, 7.3 percent fewer than in the prior-year month. During the year to date, the Group has delivered 3.8 million vehicles to customers in China, which represents growth of 2.2 percent over the comparable prior-year period.

German regional state to sue VW over diesel scandal - FAZ

Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported that German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg plans to sue Volkswagen over the carmaker's cheating of emissions tests. The federal state's bodies, including police forces, purchased Volkswagen vehicles that were equipped with a device to rig diesel emissions tests and the paper quoted a state finance ministry spokeswoman as saying it was its "budgetary duty" to sue for damages.

Baden-Wuerttemberg had sought to settle with VW but a deadline lapsed before a deal could be struck, the paper said. The state finance ministry, which is run by the German Greens, plans to lodge its claim before year-end, the paper added.

A VW spokesman told Reuters that "We have no knowledge of claims and therefore cannot comment on the content.” He added VW did not see any merit in claims for damages because the cars in question were safe and roadworthy.

Following an engine software update to address the emissions issues, the vehicles were compliant with German road traffic regulator KBA's rules, he said.

Daily Rheinische Post said another regional state, North Rhine-Westphalia - also an owner of a fleet of VW cars - was considering suing VW for damages, citing the state's justice minister.

Volkswagen to review investment plans to meet new EU CO2 targets – Mr Herbert Diess

Reuters reported that Volkswagen will have to review its plans for a shift toward mass production of electric vehicles to meet new European Union CO2 targets in 2030. Mr Herbert Diess CEO said in a statement that the new European rules require carmakers to reduce carbon emissions from cars across their fleets by 37.5 percent between 2021 and 2030.

Volkswagen's CEO said the rules would mean that VW will have to hike its electric car production to a level that it cannot meet with its current overhaul program.

Mr Herbert Diess said that "Due to the current decisions, a review of our planning is necessary, which will be done in autumn 2019, in line with our planning calendar."

German IAV Gmbh plead guilty in VW emissions case

Reuters reported that German auto supplier IAV Gmbh agreed to plead guilty and pay a USD 35 million fine for conspiring to assist Volkswagen AG in its effort to evade US diesel emissions standards. US Justice Department said IAV, which is 50 % owned by Volkswagen, will serve two years of probation and be under the oversight of an independent monitor.

Volkswagen has previously agreed to pay more than USD 25 billion in the United States, owing to claims from vehicle owners, environmental regulators, states and auto dealers, and has offered to buy back about 500,000 polluting US vehicles.

German court ruling halts Frankfurt diesel vehicle ban

Reuters reported that a ban on older diesel vehicles in parts of Frankfurt due to come into effect in February was halted by a German court on Tuesday because the reasons for the suspension were insufficient. After emissions scandals at Volkswagen AG and other German carmakers, several German cities have imposed bans on older diesel vehicles. The first ban took effect in Hamburg in May.

In September, a lower court had ordered Frankfurt, Germany's financial centre, to ban highly-polluting, older diesel vehicles from the city centre from February.

The case was one of several brought by environmental group Deutsche Umwelthilfe.

But the Hesse Administrative Court in Kassel said that it had decided to allow the state of Hesse to appeal the lower court's decision, citing "serious doubt over its validity."

A spokesman for the Kassel court said a new hearing was not expected before February.

Volkswagen changing pay system after diesel scandal

Money Control reported that Volkswagen is changing the pay system for its senior management, dropping personal performance bonuses and increasing the extent to which the company's performance is reflected in variable pay. The German automaker, still grappling with a diesel emissions scandal that erupted in 2015, the new system is based on one already used for the management board.

Taking effect from 2019, it allows the possibility of taking individual wrongdoing into account in reducing remuneration. Board member Mr Gunnar Killian said it takes into account the change in our corporate culture and emphasizes joint performance."

The company said it will provide a stronger focus on "compliant, upright behavior." It will be able to require the repayment of bonuses already received if serious wrongdoing is identified at a later date.
