. Intel
It hasn't been easy to be an Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) investor in recent years, with its stock down 27% since 2022. However, the company has made significant changes to its business model over the last year that could make it an attractive long-term option for investing in AI.

Intel is expanding in the market by launching its new line of Gaudi 3 AI graphics processing units (GPUs). The chips were released earlier this month, and claim to have 50% better inference and 40% better power efficiency than similar offerings from Nvidia.

Additionally, Intel is using its years of dominance and expertise in central processing units (CPUs) to secure a top spot in AI by expanding the AI capabilities of its processors.

ECB?

€36 miljard. WTF?

Governor Kotek Announces State Commitment to National Semiconductor Technology Center

Today, at an event celebrating Intel's plans to invest more than $36 billion to expand and modernize operations at the company’s global center for research and development, Governor Tina Kotek announced that the State of Oregon in collaboration with industry, higher education, and federal and local governments, will pursue federal semiconductor research and development funds to form a National Semiconductor Technology Center (NSTC) affiliated technical center.

4. Intel
Intel's expenses are on the rise as it invests heavily in its chip manufacturing foundry business. For now, Intel Foundry is weighing on the company's operating profit, but it should be the right long-term move as customers look to on-shore their supply chains and reduce dependence on imports and geopolitical risks associated with Taiwan.

Similar to Adobe, Intel may have simply run too far, too fast in 2023, gaining 90% last year. The pullback seems heathy given the rapid run-up in the stock price and the fact that the company is in a transition period.

For now, Intel is still heavily dependent on the PC market, which has been under pressure. But it is investing in AI products to compete on price and performance with Nvidia and other companies.

In general, a smaller nanometer size indicates a more advanced and powerful chip. Traditionally, the number referred to the distance between transistors on a chip. Smaller distances allow for more transistors to be packed into the same space, leading to significant performance gains. However, modern chipmaking has become increasingly complex. Pushing the boundaries of computing power now requires not only shrinking the size of transistors, but also a complete overhaul of their structure. Starting from 2-nm tech, TSMC and Intel will adopt the so-called gate-all-around, or nanosheet transistor, structure. Samsung began trialing such technology with its 3-nm node.

Apple's latest premium iPhone Pro uses TSMC's 3-nm technology. Many industry executives expect that generative AI will eventually need even more advanced chips.

Currently, only TSMC, Intel and Samsung are able to continue investing to make ever-smaller transistors and push chip production to new frontiers.

Is Intel too big to fail?
11 April
bits-chips.nl/artikel/intel-is-too-bi...
It’s hard to see how foreign firms building fabs in the US could ever completely soothe American national security jitters over semiconductor supply.

Intel is set to receive almost 8.5 billion dollars in grants (plus additional loans) from the US government, propping up efforts to orchestrate a turnaround for its ailing business. It won’t be enough, apparently. Even before the incentives were announced last month, Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo acknowledged that a second Chips Act will be required for the US to “lead the world” in semiconductors.

Even though Intel isn’t the only horse the US government is betting on – both Samsung and TSMC have each been awarded 6-7 billion dollars in grants for their US fabs – it’s the only Chips Act beneficiary operating at the leading edge with its roots firmly planted in US soil. This begs the question: if push comes to shove, how far will the US government be willing to go to keep its national assets afloat?

Chip sector due a May bounce with Nvidia near ‘trough valuation,’ say Bank of America strategists

The big-tech trade is having a wobble. The Magnificent 7 is being picked off one by one like their cinematic peers. The posse has left Tesla TSLA, +12.06% in the dirt, and Apple AAPL, +1.27% is straggling.

Now Meta META, -0.52% is under fire, its shares showing a 13% plunge early Thursday as investors fear boss Mark Zuckerberg is going back to his big-spending ways.

Even Nvidia NVDA, -3.33% has been running for cover. The chipmaker’s shares sat within 30 bucks of the $1,000 milestone a month ago, and since then it has lost 11.8%.

Fear not, says a team of equity strategists at Bank of America, led by Vivek Arya: a sell-off for the semiconductor sector is typical in April, things tend to get better in May, and Nvidia is now trading around a “trough valuation.”

They recognize that sentiment has been hit of late by a variety of factors, including stagflation risk, rising interest rates, geopolitical worries, AI fatigue, and uninspiring near-term outlooks from industry barometers Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing TSM, -0.34% and ASML ASML, -1.03%.

In addition, “demand trends in consumer (PC, phones), enterprise and autos are lukewarm,” says BofA.
