Masteel Triumphs with Start-up of Art Caster from Primetals
In a remarkable feat of engineering prowess, Chinese steel producer Maanshan Iron & Steel, also known as Masteel, has successfully initiated operations of a cutting-edge 6-strand combined billet and beam-blank caster supplied by Primetals Technologies. The new caster, with an impressive annual capacity of 1.1 million metric tons, promises increased production volume and enhanced capabilities for casting a range of steel grades.
The ambitious project, encompassing comprehensive engineering, supply of key equipment, and advanced Level 1 and 2 automation systems, was completed within an impressive timeframe of just 13 and a half months. Despite the hurdles presented by external circumstances, the project team's unwavering dedication to close collaboration and effective communication enabled the equipment to be commissioned two weeks ahead of schedule, exemplifying their commitment to excellence.
The state-of-the-art caster features cutting-edge technologies that optimize the casting process and ensure superior quality outputs. A dual-type oscillator guarantees unparalleled oscillation accuracy, facilitating optimal lubrication of the mold and impeccable surface quality. Primetals Technologies' innovative secondary cooling solution prevents over-cooling of the flange tips and the occurrence of surface cracks, further enhancing the overall product quality. Additionally, the patented continuous straightening concept reduces tension during the straightening process, optimizing the overall production workflow.
To streamline operations and maximize efficiency, Primetals Technologies' Level 2 automation system CC Optimizer is deployed, overseeing production planning and providing real-time data on heat, strand conditions, and products throughout the casting process. The system incorporates advanced expert systems such as Yield Expert, which optimizes cut lengths to maximize production output, and Quality Expert, which collects and evaluates data on production events and quality-related information. Speed Expert, another integral component of the automation system, calculates the optimal casting speed, ensuring optimal productivity.
