Rentebesluit remt Wall Street af

De Amerikaanse aandelenmarkten zijn woensdag stabiel geëindigd nadat de Federal Reserve had besloten zijn rentetarieven onveranderd te laten. Eerder op de dag waren de indexen nochtans mooi hoger gegaan na de publicatie van meevallende Amerikaanse macrodata. Die stuurden ook de Europese beurzen hoger.

Fed houdt rentetarieven onveranderd

De Amerikaanse centrale bank, de Federal Reserve, heeft woensdag zoals verwacht besloten de rente onveranderd te laten op 0 tot 0,25 procent. De Fed geeft verder aan de rente geruime tijd 'uitzonderlijk' laag te zullen houden. Tegelijkertijd toont de Fed zich iets optimistischer over de Amerikaanse economie.

Frankrijk gaat net als Groot-Brittannië bankenbonussen belasten. Over elke uitgekeerde variabele beloning hoger dan euro 27.000 wordt 50% belasting geheven.

Darling refuses to publish interest estimates

Alistair Darling refused yesterday to disclose Treasury projections of how much interest Britain will have to pay every year to service the country’s burgeoning debt pile.

According to independent estimates, the interest bill will more than double in the next five years to £71.45 billion, almost twice the annual budget for the Ministry of Defence. The sum would represent the biggest single outgoing for the Government after the NHS. The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) anticipates that the interest bill will jump from £55 billion in 2011-12, to £59.9 billion the following year, and £71.45 billion in 2014-15.

FTC takes Intel to court over 'market abuse'

Intel, the world’s biggest maker of computer chips, is facing fresh charges that it abused its dominant market position for a decade to stifle competition, this time from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the American competition regulator.

Intel makes about 80 per cent of all the microprocessors that serve as the brains in PCs and servers. Its sales tactics, aimed at persuading computer makers, such as Dell, to use only Intel central processing unit (CPU) chips, have been the subject of bitter controversy for years.
