Tata Steel Noamundi Iron Mine Bags Sustainable Development Rating

The Noamundi Iron Mine of Tata Steel has been accorded 5-Star rating for sustainable development for the year 2020-21. This is for the fourth time in a row that Noamundi Mine has received this honour. The mine was accorded 5-Star rating in 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20. The award was given during the 6th National Conclave on Mines & Minerals, organised by the Union Mines Ministry on 12 July 2022 in New Delhi as part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav iconic week celebrations.

Tata Steel`s operating philosophy is deep-rooted in its principles of zero harm, resource efficiency, circular economy, minimising its ecological footprint, and care for the community and workforce. Sustainable mining plays a key role in the ecological restoration in and around mining and mined-out areas. From development of abandoned areas through afforestation to reclamation of mined-out areas, each step is meticulously thought off and implemented at Tata Steel.

With sustainability as a cornerstone of its operations, Noamundi Mine has taken several initiatives in and around the region with respect to energy conservation and reducing carbon footprint including rainwater harvesting, plantation in and around Noamundi, setting up of 3 MW Solar Power Plant to reduce the carbon footprint and generate power in a sustainable manner, to name a few. Moreover, it has been a front runner in recruiting 22 women Heavy Earth Moving Machinery operators in 2019 and has the credit of being the first mine in India to deploy women in all shifts.

The Ministry of Mines had launched the scheme of ‘Star Rating of Mines’ for awarding the mining lease owners in 2016 for their efforts and initiatives for implementation of the Sustainable Development Framework.

US Steel Production Capacity Utilization Dips Below 79% in Week 28

American Iron & Steel Institute announced that in the week ending on 16 July 2022, US’s domestic raw steel production was 1.738 million net tons while the capability utilization rate was 78.9%. Production was 1.862 million net tons in the week ending 16 July 2021 while the capability utilization then was 84.4%. The current week production represents a 6.7% decrease from the same period in the previous year. Production for the week ending 16 July 2022 is down 0.6% from the previous week ending 9 July 2022 when production was 1.748 million net tons and the rate of capability utilization was 79.3%.

Southern: 724 KNT

Great Lakes: 574 KNT

Midwest: 205 KNT

North East: 166 KNT

Western: 69 KNT

Adjusted year-to-date production through 16 July 2022 was 49.354 million net tons, at a capability utilization rate of 80.4%. That is down 2.5% from the 50.623 million net tons during the same period last year, when the capability utilization rate was 80.1%.

World's leading cash buyer of ships for recycling GMS said that “Given that there are a bare minimal number of even potential candidates floating around for End Buyers to work with, recycling markets appear to be settling for now, at levels well below USD 600 per LDT for the most part, a negative differential of about USD 150 per LDT from the peaks witnessed earlier this year.”

GMS said “Currencies continue to depreciate across the globe and hit respective historical lows, as some dismal performances, primarily from Gadani Recyclers in the recent past, have left Owners and Cash Buyers nervous to touch this market whilst the situation remains so precarious. Fortunately, firm freight markets continue to deprive the recycling industry of any meaningful tonnage and this is likely to continue for at least the next few months ahead.”

GMS also said “The summer & monsoon months are traditionally quieter due to the constant rains & tropical storms that tend to afflict the area resulting in slower cutting times of vessels during downpours. As such, laborers return to their hometowns as yards are ‘naturally’ condemned to a period bereft of activity. Notwithstanding, we have yet to see things get this quiet for many a year now.”

GMS added “The political and now turning into a financial collapse witnessed recently in Sri Lanka is also rattling sub-continent nerves, amidst fears from both the weaker Pakistan and Bangladeshi economies who feel they could well be next, as their respective currencies and the painful lack of available steel plates that eventually affect domestic improvement and construction projects, all converge to an economy being suffered by the unfolding of times.”

GMS said “The only market that is displaying a degree of stability, at least where plate prices are concerned, is Turkey, with both import and local steel reporting no major changes through the course of the week. Indian and Pakistani port reports too remain empty as recycling yards gradually turn barren across all of the major recycling destinations, whilst industry players hope for some stability and improved sentiments in the weeks & months ahead.”

Mechel Commissions Wure Drawing Mills at Beloretsk Plant

Russia's leading miner & steel maker Mechel has launched eight drawing mills at the Beloretsk Iron and Steel Works for the production of wire worth over RUB 500 million. 12 new high-performance mills were installed in the workshops of the plant. The total investment amounted to RUB 1.5 billion. The new drawing equipment is equipped with scale breakers, belt grinding units, baths for washing and applying a pre-lubricating layer. This makes it possible to remove scale from the work piece mechanically and avoid chemical pickling of wire rod and to increase productivity due to higher drawing speeds. In addition, when working on new straight-through mills, twisting of the metal during processing is minimized, which improves the mechanical properties of the wires

The new drawing machines will be used to produce spring wire, welding wire, wire for reinforcing ropes, as well as wire of ordinary quality. The total productivity of 12 mills will be more than 125,000 tonnes of products per year.

In parallel with the installation of drawing equipment in the workshops, work was carried out on the construction of a new closed circulating water supply cycles, aspiration installations for dust collection were installed.

BMK had launched an investment project to modernize steel wire and rope production in 2016. The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2023. It provides for a large-scale technical re-equipment of steel wire shops with the installation of new drawing machines and auxiliary equipment, as well as the reconstruction of water circulation cycles and the installation of a new wastewater treatment plant for steel wire and rope production.

Beloretsk Metallurgical Plant is also the largest hardware company in Russia, the flagship of the metallurgical production in Bashkortostan. MMK’s Cold Rolling Mill Complex Completes 10 Years of Service

Russian steel maker Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works had completed the construction of a new cold rolling complex at Rolling Mill No 11 in 2012 and on 16 July 2022, the second phase of the large-scale project was put into operation in the presence of Russian President Mr Vladimir Putin. Its main purpose is the production of high-quality cold-rolled and galvanized steel for the automotive industry, manufacturers of household appliances and the construction industry. The technological equipment of the complex includes a continuous pickling line for turbulent pickling in hydrochloric acid, combined with a five-stand cold rolling mill with a capacity of 2.1 million tonnes per year; continuous hot-dip galvanizing unit with a capacity of 450,000 tonnes per year; combined continuous annealing & hot-dip galvanizing plant with a capacity of 650,000 tonnes per year. The total cost of building the complex was about USD 1.5 billion.

The first stage of the complex tandem Cold Rolling Mill 2000 was launched in July 2011. A year later, the second stage of the complex was commissioned. Over the years of operation of MMK's high-tech and modern cold rolling complex, its products have been highly appreciated and approved by the country's automotive industry enterprises: both traditional domestic automakers and foreign automakers localizing their facilities in Russia.

Sweden to Support Steel Making over Crypto Currency Mining

Europe’s one of the largest crypto currency mining sector Sweden prefers to supply electricity for the production of decarbonized steel making life difficult for virtual miners as rising energy prices have presented Sweden with a choice to supply electricity for job-creating projects such as steel mills or allocate more power to bitcoin miners, which require more and more energy. The other possible move is to limit the scope of the preferential tax treatment that all data centers currently enjoy. The argument is that the intended purpose of this incentive was to attract multinational corporations such as Microsoft and Facebook, not crypto mining businesses

The location of crypto mining farms is largely determined by the availability of cheap electricity while the profits for their operators depend to a large extent on the prices of crypto assets. With its hydro reservoirs and wind parks providing clean and low-cost electricity, Sweden has attracted many bitcoin miners and its coin minting industry has become one of largest in Europe. However, worried about its increased power consumption, the government has tasked the Swedish Energy Agency to estimate the energy usage in the digital space, especially crypto mining. The results from the ordered review are likely to worsen the first of these conditions and the crypto market downturn has already affected the other one.

SSAB, which plans to make fossil-free steel, said grid operators should prioritize industrial projects like its own, rather than connecting users on a first-come, first-served basis, as they do now. SSAB official said “You can take into account which projects bring the most benefit to the climate and society. We could cut Sweden's carbon emissions by 10%.”

TMK Starts Construction of Waste Water Treatment Plant at ChTPZ

Russian pipe maker Pipe Metallurgical Company TMK has started the construction of a new environmental facility at the Chelyabinsk Pipe Rolling Plant, the AQA Balance complex for the treatment of industrial and storm water. The total area of the facility will be 3800 square meters. Modern technical solutions of AQA Balance will make it possible to purify wastewater from oil products, suspended and organic substances, heavy metals and salts. After passing through all stages of the complex, purified water will be returned to production. The surplus, brought to the water quality standards for fishery facilities of the 1st category, will flow into Lake Shelyugino.

The project for the construction of treatment facilities for industrial and storm water is being implemented as part of the ChTPZ Discharge Reduction Plan, signed in 2017 with the Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources in the Chelyabinsk Region.

CSC Concerned over Russian HR Imports into Taiwan

Russian media reports suggest that state owned Taiwan’s biggest steel maker China Steel Corporation is concerned about reports that Russia is flooding the Taiwanese market with unreasonably cheap steel. China Steel Corporation said “Glut is pushing down prices and making it harder for Taiwan’s own steel makers to survive. Imports of Russian hot-rolled steel products at unreasonably low prices will not only disrupt the market order of supply and demand but will also put Taiwan at risk of being sued for anti-dumping by other countries if downstream steel users purchase low-priced Russia’s steel products and process them for export. The company is investigating what it calls Russia’s unfair trade practices.”

China Steel Corporation also reported that the preliminary consolidated operating revenues in June 2022 totaled NTD 44.744 billion and consolidated operating income totaled NTD 3.765 billion, while income before income tax totaled NTD 4.297 billion. The sales volume of carbon steel in June 2022 totaled 0.806 million tonnes to take YTD sales volume to 4.678 million tonnes. CSC said “The increase in ASC surpassed that in ASP of steel department contributed to the lower consolidated operating income. In addition, the non-operating income was higher in this month because of KRTC's income from stabilization fund and the increase in foreign exchange gain.”

Salzgitter’s MGR Supplying Pipes to Link Brunsbu¨ttel LNG Terminal

German steel maker Salzgitter AG’s subsidiary Mannesmann Grossrohr will supply the pipes for the link to the LNG gas terminal in Brunsbu¨ttel in Northern Germany. Mannesmann Grossrohr has now been commissioned by Gasunie Deutschland to produce and deliver the pipes for the Energy Transport Pipeline ETL 180. Featuring a diameter of 800mm, the pipeline covers a distance of around 54 kilometers. About 3,200 pipes are to be delivered by February 2023 and have been specified so as to handle hydrogen in future. As Mannesmann Grossrohr is already producing the pipes for the connecting pipeline to the Wilhelmshaven LNG terminal, it has now also been assigned with supplying the pipes for the link to the Brunsbu¨ttel LNG terminal.

As Burkhard Becker, Salzgitter AG’s Chief Financial Officer and responsible for the Steel Processing Business Unit, states: “The secure sourcing of gas is an essential precondition for society and the economy to function smoothly. Consequently, the planned LNG terminal and the pipelines are of crucial significance for Germany’s future energy supply, especially now. The Salzgitter Group is making an important contribution to building a powerful infrastructure – and this project is a most notable example.”

Putting the pipeline in place at short notice diversifies the sources of gas and is therefore of elementary importance in terms of energy policy. Commissioning has been scheduled by the end of 2023 to enable the pipeline to transport the volumes produced by the floating LNG terminal in Brunsbu¨ttel to areas of high demand. With an annual regasification capacity of 7.5 to 10 billion cubic meters, the pipeline provides an alternative for sourcing natural gas from regions that have so far not had gas pipelines linking them up to the German market.

Jindal Stainless to Supply Stainless Steel forCable Tray in Tunnel

PTI reported that Jindal Stainless will supply 3,500 tonnes of stainless steel for the Indian Railway's 272 kilometers long Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link tunnel project coming up in Jammu and Kashmir. Jindal Stainless Steelway will supply EN 1.4404/316L dual certification stainless steel grade in 2B finish for the project owing to its high corrosion resistance, high strength-to-weight ratio, and a lower life cycle cost.

This will be the first-ever application of stainless steel cable trays in an Indian railway project.

Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link has been declared a project of national importance and is the biggest one in the construction of a mountain railway since independence. It is also the highest altitude railway network and the most challenging railway project undertaken by the Indian Railways.

The newly constructed railway line will provide an all-weather and reliable connectivity to Jammu and Kashmir.

HBIS Develops Super Thick 3.5Ni Plates for FPSO Oil & Gas Projects

Chinese steel maker HBIS has delivered 160mm 3.5Ni plates to its overseas clients to manufacture for the production of gas compression secondary washing tower of FPSO P79 oil project. 160mm 3.5Ni plate is currently China’s thickest plate, 10mm thicker than the existing one, replacing foreign made products. 3.5Ni steel is a type of super low temperature with 3.5% Nickel that owns excellent low temperature ductility, strength and welding capabilities even in temperatures as low as minus 101 degrees Celsius. It is one major material manufacturing low temperature equipment.

In view of special requirements of plate thickness exceeding the standard 10 mm and impact strength nearly 3 times higher than domestic Q235 carbon structural steel, HBIS set up a special technical team to develop personalized product development plans for customers. HBIS team communicated with American Bureau of Shipping in several rounds and intensified technology upgrading, researched and developed created solutions. Two new technology innovations were designed on the basis of the technical indicators leading international standard, at least 15 days shorten delivery cycle, and finally won the customer recognition, obtained the exclusive right to supply steel for the manufacture of gas compression secondary washing tower for foreign projects.

Tata Steel Nederland Inks Pact for Decarbonization of Steel Making

The Province of North Holland, the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure & Water Management, the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs & Climate and Tata Steel Nederland have signed an Expression of Principles on sustainability. By 2030, Tata Steel Nederland wants to have its CO2 emissions reduced by 5 Megatons and by 2045 it wants to be CO2 neutral. Additional ambitions for improving the living environment have also been included in this new Expression of Principles. Although the Expression of Principles is not binding, this statement is indicative. The document serves as a framework for the customized agreement between the government and Tata Steel. This Expression of Principles determines the direction that will be further elaborated in the coming period in the binding customized agreements between Tata Steel and the government.

In September 2021, Tata Steel decided to switch from underground storage of CO2 to the production of green steel with the Direct Reduced Iron production process. This process is more sustainable and cleaner than the current steel-making method, and uses green hydrogen for production. The transition to this steel-making method is complex, as the entire steel-making process has to be adapted and existing blast furnaces replaced.

The amended Expression of Principles includes additional ambitions for reducing the company’s impact on the living environment. For example, it has been agreed that Tata Steel Nederland will conduct research into further improving the environmental and health situation prior to the transition in 2030. But also to investigate the possibility of the earlier closure of business activities, such as the Coking and Gas Plant 2

The government, the Province of North Holland and Tata Steel underline the importance of more sustainable and clean steel production for the Netherlands. In the Expression of Principles, the governments indicate that they are prepared to investigate how the plans and projects to transform the company into a more sustainable and clean steel plant can be supported. In addition to any necessary financial support, it also involves timely decision-making about permit applications and the realization of the necessary hydrogen infrastructure. Attention is also paid to the nitrogen issue.

JSW Steel Partners with BCG for Green Steel Transformation

Indian steel giant JSW Steel has announced partnership with US based Boston Consulting Group to meet its decarbonization goals of reducing its carbon emission by 42% by 2029-30 versus base year 2005. This collaboration is focused on applying digital and analytics to track, measure, simulate and enhance the company's environmental performance, Rao said in a statement. In the process, BCG will also focus on up skilling JSW Steel's employees and enhance the sustainability culture across the manufacturing operations. This transformative initiative will play a critical role in scaling up the company's sustainability initiatives.

The program includes a rigorous target-setting exercise, at an overall manufacturing level, devolving them into shop-level targets, and converting emissions targets into actionable tasks on operating metrics. A team of sustainability champions will lead the deployment across the manufacturing operations. For all mid-to-long term initiatives, a roadmap will be designed aimed at introducing new technologies and initiatives including use of hydrogen, carbon capture and storage, among others. It will also include end-to-end assessment of diverse technology options relevant for existing and new capacities and investments required to further the sustainability goals.

Boston Consulting Group CEO Mr Christoph Schweizer said “We will be deploying our proprietary and patented CO2 AI solution to achieve focused change management and impact. This is our second strategic collaboration with JSW Steel following the successful Digital Transformation partnership.”

According to India’s Steel Ministry, while the iron and steel industry globally accounts for around 8% of total carbon dioxide emissions on an annual basis, Indian steel sector contributes 12% to the total CO2 emissions of India. Metso Outotec to Upgrade NMDC Iron Ore Crusher at Kirandul

Metso Outotec has signed an agreement with Larsen & Toubro Limited to supply four Symons cone crushers for an iron ore crushing and screening plant to National Mineral Development Corporation at Kirandul complex in Chhattisgarh, in the region of Central India.

Crushing has one of the biggest environmental impacts in mining and aggregate operations. It is also one of the most critical ones. The right crusher and parts selection have a big impact on the whole crushing efficiency and economy. The new Symons cone crushers have advanced features that will make the customer’s operations more efficient and reduce maintenance efforts compared to earlier versions and to other equivalent crushers on the market.

Importers utilise one-third of EU safeguard quotas

European steel import activity remains sustained despite the weakness of domestic demand during recent months, Kallanish finds.

According to data from the official European database collected by UK Steel, European importers used some 29% of available safeguard quotas for Q3 during the first 13 days of July. Last year in early July during the same period some 18% were used while in January 2022 some 33% of quotas were used during the first ten days of Q1.

For flat products, over 70% of organic coated sheets quotas have been used, with Indian, Turkish and “Other countries” quotas fully consumed. HRC and CRC quotas remain widely available, but all Chinese metallic coated sheets quotas for the sub-group 4b have been consumed.

For long products, Turkish rebar quotas have been exhausted. Usually Turkish wire rod quotas are also consumed very quickly, but this time around so far some 33% of the allocated quotas remain available. Turkish hollow sections quotas have also been fully used.

Stainless CRC quotas are also under pressure, as Turkish, Taiwanese and “Other countries” quotas have been fully used already. Indian stainless bars and wire rod quotas are also exhausted.

Eurofer calculated that if European finished steel imports continue at the pace registered during the first five months of this year, they could reach a new record level at 34.5mt over the year. Last year imports of all finished steel products surpassed 30mt, beating the previous record registered back in 2018.

ZK International to Supply Thin Walled SS Pipes to Fuzhou Water

Wenzhou China based ZK International Group announced that as part of its procurement success, the Company has started to supply the thin wall stainless steel pipe to Fuzhou Water Supply Chain Management Co, which has one of the largest water supply chains in China. As part of this procurement stage, it has been reported that the total cost of this stage of the project is USD 5 million, of which ZK International has ranked the first amongst all the other suppliers. ZKIN has secured an estimated total sales amount of USD 1.8 million of these rounds of tenders.

The goods purchased in this project are mainly used for water supply installation for the water supply infrastructure in Fuzhou. The manufacturing standards, installation standards, and technical specifications of the goods provided must comply with the corresponding national standards, industrial standards, and specifications of the country.

Metinvest Spends UAH1.7 Billion under Steel Front

Since the early days of the Russia Ukraine war, Metinvest’s Mr Rinat Akhmetov and Mr Vadym Novynskyi’s have channeled all resources into bringing Ukraine’s victory closer. The steelworkers, miners and repair workers of the Group’s enterprises have been holding the line, showing resilience through their own “Steel Front”. Overall, Metinvest has donated more than UAH1.7 billion to support the army, the national economy, employees and civilians. Mr Akhmetov said “Metinvest’s Steel Front is a contribution to our joint victory and the future of Ukraine. The Group’s steel, which features in hundreds of thousands of armour vests, is protecting the lives of our soldiers who are defending Ukraine’s sovereignty. Metinvest’s steel has formed the backbone of tens of thousands of shelters, anti-tank hedgehogs and fortifications, which help to stop the aggressor. We will walk the path to victory together and, after victory, we will rebuild everything that was destroyed together.”

The key areas of the “Steel Front” are the army, the economy, team and help.

Army - Metinvest has been donating modern equipment for the armed forces of Ukraine, territorial defence units, national guards, the national police, the defence intelligence corps and other forces.

Economy - The economic situation is complicated: rising production costs, falling prices and lower demand for products have been accompanied by logistical problems. Traditional Black Sea ports for export are blocked, and the throughput capacity of railway border crossings to the west does not meet the demand for transportation. In addition, Ukrainian railway tariffs remain quite high. Government regulatory support can help to restore the industry’s ability to hold the economic front.

Team - Metinvest is offering comprehensive support to all employees who were evacuated from Mariupol and Avdiivka to the territory controlled by Ukraine. In particular, the Group has prepared more than 6,000 temporary accommodation places in its social facilities, is providing people with food and is distributing food and hygiene kits.

Help - Civilians in Ukraine are suffering from not only shelling and bombardments, but also a lack of access to food, water, essential items and medicines. To prevent a humanitarian catastrophe, Metinvest and DTEK, in coordination with the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation, have created the Saving Lives project.
