Published on :
7 Mar, 2023, 5:52 am

Alusín Solar, Avilés Asturias based Spanish company specializing in the design, manufacture and installation of metal structures for solar panels, and ArcelorMittal, are collaborating to reduce the CO2 footprint of Alusín Solar products.

Alusín Solar, a Spanish company that has supplied structures for the installation of solar panels representing a generation capacity of more than 850 MW in more than 32 countries, has signed an agreement for the purchase of ArcelorMittal's XCarb® Recycled and Renewably Produced steel products with Magnelis® coating, a metallic coating that provides a very high level of protection against corrosion. XCarb® Recycled and Renewably Produced steel products are manufactured using 100% renewable electricity and a very high proportion of recycled scrap.

As part of this collaboration, Alusín Solar has carried out the first driving production tests for solar structures using Magnelis® coated steel, a much more efficient method than the production of structures with galvanized steel after the forming process. This solution provides Alusín Solar with the possibility to react more quickly to the demands of its customers. A key factor in the success of this project has been ArcelorMittal's development of a 15-year automatic floor installation warranty for Alusín Solar.

These positive results come at the best time, as from May the ArcelorMittal plant in Avilés will be able to produce XCarb® Recycled and Renewably Produced steels with Magnelis® coating in thicknesses of up to 3.5mm in its newly remodeled Galvanizing Line No 1, which will result in a 70% reduction in CO2 emissions per metric ton of steel produced, compared to the traditional manufacturing method. Alusín Solar will be one of the first customers to purchase XCarb® RRP products with Magnelis® coating manufactured in the remodeled galvanizing line, following the successful technical cooperation carried out to optimize the supplies of steels for the solar energy sector, thus obtaining a substantial physical reduction of the CO2 footprint.

Until now, customers of Magnelis® products in Spain received part of the supplies for thicknesses greater than 2mm from ArcelorMittal plants in other parts of Europe.

ArcelorMittal's Magnelis® product is metal-coated steel that offers exceptional corrosion resistance performance, providing optimal and long-lasting surface protection against wear and tear. Thanks to its unique chemical composition, Magnelis® provides an exceptional level of protection on both coated surfaces and cutting edges, even in the most aggressive environments. In addition, the self-healing effect of the Magnelis® coating ensures the protection of the steel in uncoated edges, scratches and perforations.

UK Faltering on Green Steel Production

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
7 Mar, 2023, 5:54 am

UK’s Energy & Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) has reported that the UK is falling further behind in the race to develop green steel plants, after ECIU found that in 2021, the UK had zero planned green steel projects, compared to 23 in the EU and overall UK has 1 project compared to 38 in the EU, says Edie. Does the Chancellor have something up his sleeve to ensure the UK doesn’t fall further behind on steel, questions Mr. Jess Ralston, energy analyst at ECIU

Around 10 EU plants have started producing green steel with renewable energy and green hydrogen, made through electrolysis from renewable electricity and producing no emissions. Since 2021, the number of these green steel projects has doubled, either in the form of new sites or older ones switching from blue hydrogen in the past two years.

The UK, on the other hand, has one planned project at British Steel’s Scunthorpe plant which is part of the Zero Carbon Humber initiative. The project would use blue hydrogen combined with carbon capture technologies.

At the start of the year, it emerged that the UK Government was planning two grants of £ 300M each for British Steel and Tata Steel, with requirements to cut carbon. It is also allegedly set to consult on a carbon border tax for steel.

British Steel has previously pressed for up to £ 1B of Government support to adopt technologies that will enable it to align with the UK’s legally binding net-zero carbon target for 2050. Tata Steel is reportedly pricing the transition of its Port Talbot steelworks to net-zero at up to £ 3B.

Costlier inputs prompt ArcelorMittal to hike EU longs
309 Views

ArcelorMittal is communicating to its European customers this week its intention to raise long product offers, in order to recover some margin loss due to higher input costs.

According to market sources, the company is increasing offers for commodity-grade products by some €30/tonne ($321) with immediate effect. Longer-term contracts for the second quarter for higher-grade products are being raised by a minimum of €50/t.

The company previously announced its intention to raise longs offers in Europe in mid-January, but that move was not accepted by the market. According to Kallanish indices, rebar prices in both northern Europe and Italy moved down in February, reaching in northern Europe’s case €765/t ex-works base, their lowest level since May 2021.

Sources among European suppliers are now hopeful this new price hike will be accepted, as demand indicators are picking up and increased production costs led by scrap have been well advertised.

One source notes that, at current price levels, European mills are also significantly reducing their output of commodity-grade long products, to avoid selling at below cost. “This first price increase could be followed by new ones if scrap levels continue to recover at the pace they are now,” a source adds.

For the first time since April 2022, rebar prices in northern Europe have returned to below hot rolled coil values, as a consequence of the diverging trend the two products have witnessed since the beginning of this year.

Vale to Turn Gelado Tailings into High-Grade Iron Ore

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
8 Mar, 2023, 3:30 am

Brazilian miner Vale is turning 37 years worth of mining waste at an iron ore complex in the Amazon into high-quality material to be used in steel production, says Bloomberg

Vale has started extracting scrap that had been dumped at a tailings dam at Carajas in northern Brazil since 1985 as part of a project at its largest iron ore operation. The material, which is rich in iron ore particles, will be processed into feed for a plant that makes pellets to be used in blast furnaces for steelmaking. The $ 485M Gelado project will have an initial production capacity of 5M metric tons a year.

Vale is using all-electric dredges to extract the 140M metric tons of tailings, along with pumps powered by hydroelectricity instead of fossil fuels. After that, the ore undergoes a process that uses magnets to separate ferrous particles from contaminants and improve its quality.

The operation is expected to reach full annual capacity of 10M metric tons by 2026. That could translate into 8.3M metric tons of pellets, or about a quarter of Vale’s total output last year.

Spain’s scrap, rebar prices increase
274 Views

Scrap prices have continued rising in Spain since the beginning of March. The rebound seen in the international market has pushed domestic levels up and the increase is set to continue, sources tell Kallanish. Meanwhile, rebar prices also went up amid uncertainty in the domestic construction sector.

“Most of the large mills increased their purchase prices by almost €15/tonne [$16.01] for all categories in the last days of February,” a local source explains. "This week, only offers for E1 grade moved up, by €25/t. The other qualities are expected to follow this increase in the coming days, by €15/t on average." According to another market participant, demand for new E8 quality continues to rise amid manufacturers’ lower production and the slowdown in activity in the automotive sector.

New arisings grade E8 scrap is now offered in Spain at €440/t, while both demolition-quality grade E3 and E40 stand at €405/t, all delivered. E1 quality is at €390/t on the same basis.

On the other hand, the Spanish rebar market has also seen a substantial price recovery. However, local buyers are not yet accepting new prices, while mills are evaluating whether to raise selling values to over €800/t ex-works in the next few days.

"Last week, Celsa offered material at higher prices than the rest of the market players, but since Monday, Megasa and Siderúrgica Sevillana also began to sell rebar at a higher level, backed by the new market situation and better demand from abroad,” a stockist comments.

The market has so far been unable to digest the scale of the increase. “We are not buying, nor selling rebar at the current price. The steel companies are maintaining their position due to the sharp growth of scrap offer prices, while demand from abroad has increased due to the shortage of material spurred by Turkey's earthquake,” another seller observes.

Most suppliers and distribution centres confirm the situation is again impacting construction activity in the country.

“The sector remains weaker in this first quarter compared to the good start we had in 2022, but we are confident that there will be a slight recovery throughout the year, driven by EU funding under its Resilience Facility, an impact that is yet to come,” a representative of the construction sector comments. "The improvement will depend on macroeconomic developments, interest rates, inflation, energy costs and, above all, on the recovery of investments and the execution of public works," he adds.

Rebar is currently sold domestically in Spain at €475-495/t ($506.91-528.25) base. Including €262/t size extras and €23/t loading expenses, transaction values are at €760-780/t ex-works.

UK’s TRA to Eextend AD Duty on HR Steel

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
9 Mar, 2023, 5:59 am

UK’s Trade Remedies Authority has published its initial findings in transition reviews into trade remedy measures on imports of hot rolled flat and coil steel from China, Russia, Ukraine, Brazil and Iran. The TRA proposes to extend the measures on imports from China, Russia, Brazil and Iran but remove them for Ukraine, as it concluded that dumping of products from Ukraine was unlikely to recur, due to reduction in Ukraine’s production capacity and limits on the ability to export caused by the war with Russia. The TRA also took into account Ukraine’s requirement to rebuild steel production facilities and domestic demand for steel to rebuild the country’s infrastructure.

Tariffs on imports of this product from Ukraine have been suspended since August 2022. The suspension is due to end on 30 May 2023. The TRA proposes that the measure on Ukraine imports is revoked. However, in the meantime the TRA will assess whether the suspension on tariffs for Ukrainian imports should be extended for a further 12 months.

Following thorough analysis, our conclusion is that UK steel producers would be harmed if protection against unfair imports from China, Russia, Brazil or Iran was removed. We have concluded that the impact of the war and subsequent reconstruction in Ukraine means that there is little likelihood of Ukraine dumping hot rolled steel products into the UK, explains Mr Oliver Griffiths, TRA Chief Executive

This product covers hot-rolled flat products of iron, non-alloy and other alloy steel. It’s commonly used as a raw material for other types of steel and makes up almost 1/3 of all steel production globally.
