Van Céline Dion tot Bruce Springsteen: wereld blaast (online) verzamelen in Polen op conferentie voor Oekraïne
In Warschau vindt "Stand up for Ukraine" plaats, een internationale donorconferentie voor de vluchtelingen en slachtoffers van de oorlog in Oekraïne. Het gaat om een initiatief van Commissievoorzitter Ursula Von der Leyen, de Canadese premier Justin Trudeau en het benefietplatform Global Citizen. Verschillende wereldsterren als Céline Dion en Bruce Springsteen spreken hun steun uit.

Bedoeling van de groots opgezette actie, met steun van sterren als Billie Eilish, Madonna, Céline Dion, Katy Perry en Bruce Springsteen, is uiteraard geld inzamelen, maar ook om wereldleiders aan te sporen om meer geld vrij te maken voor vluchtelingen over de hele wereld. Global Citizen spreekt over 82,4 miljoen ontheemden. Naast schenkingen kan je helpen door petities te tekenen en op sociale media video's te delen.

Emergency service reveals over 4,000 explosive items in Kyiv Region per day

Every day the Ukrainian State Emergency Service reveals more than 4,000 explosive items within the areas liberated from Russian invaders in Kyiv Region.

The relevant statement was made by Ukrainian Internal Affairs Minister Denys Monastyrskyi on Facebook, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

“In Kyiv Region, the Ukrainian State Emergency Service reveals more than 4,000 explosive items per day,” Monastyrskyi wrote.

The entire Kyiv Region has recently been liberated from Russian invaders, and now we can see the effects of the Russian invasion.

“The enemy acted not like the military but like a looter, murderer and rapist,” Monastyrskyi stressed.

In his words, forensic experts and investigation officers are now working at the scene of war crimes to document the evidence.

According to Monastyrskyi, many buildings are yet to be cleared of mines. Sappers are finding mines placed under helmets, in ammunition boxes, at the entrances to cellars, where the victims can be.

Monastyrskyi noted that Russian invaders had set trip wires even at the entrance door of the Hostomel unit of Ukrainian rescuers.

“Hence, the search for the dead civilians is complicated due to a large number of mines placed in public and residential buildings, as well as the massive rubble, under which the bodies of victims may remain trapped,” Monastyrskyi added.

The Ukrainian State Emergency Service called on volunteers to assist them in dismantling the rubble.

“In Borodianka, we met one hundred volunteer rescuers, who had already started to dismantle the rubble. Over three days, more than 5,000 persons have joined such volunteer units. I am grateful to everyone who has come forward. This is an important front in this war. This will greatly speed up rubble dismantling works,” Monastyrskyi stressed.

In his words, the enemy is insidious and ruthless, and the Ukrainian authorities are considering any threatening scenarios in the direction of Kyiv and preparing to face the enemy in enhanced mode.

Rusland in gebreke bij obligaties in buitenlandse valuta’s, stelt kredietbeoordelaar S&P Global

Kredietbeoordelaar Standard & Poor’s (S&P Global) meent dat Rusland in gebreke is gebleven bij het terugbetalen van staatsleningen in buitenlandse valuta’s. Dat gebeurde toen Rusland een deel van een lening in dollars in roebels terugbetaalde. Als er niet binnen dertig dagen alsnog een betaling in dollars komt, leidt dat tot een faillissement.

S&P verlaagde ook de beoordeling voor de Russische uitgifte van staatsleningen in buitenlandse valuta’s naar de laagste waarde. Dat houdt in dat Rusland volgens de kredietbeoordelaar op dit vlak als failliet kan worden beschouwd. S&P stelt namelijk dat zelfs als het land zijn schuldenaren in roebels betaalt, het nog maar de vraag is of die schuldenaren die afbetaling weer kunnen omwisselen voor de waarde die ze in dollars hadden moeten krijgen. Ook houdt S&P rekening met meer sancties tegen Rusland.

Sinds de Russische inval in Oekraïne heeft het Westen het land een reeks sancties opgelegd waarvan een groot deel financieel van aard is. Zo werd de toegang van Rusland tot vreemde valuta’s die het land bij buitenlandse centrale banken aanhield afgesloten wat het moeilijker maakte voor het land om schulden aan buitenlandse partijen te voldoen. Afgelopen week zorgde een Amerikaanse sanctie er bovendien voor dat Rusland ook geen Amerikaanse banken mag gebruiken voor het afbetalen van schulden.

Obligatiehandelaren schatten inmiddels de kans op een faillissement van Rusland dit jaar in op 90 procent. De laatste keer dat het land in gebreke bleef was in 1998, maar toen alleen voor binnenlandse schulden. De laatste keer dat dit voor buitenlandse schulden gebeurde was na de Februarirevolutie van 1917.

De vele sancties laten zich ook voelen voor de bevolking van Rusland. De Russische centrale bank verlaagde deze week al onverwacht de rente van 20 procent naar 17 procent om de economie wat te steunen. Tegelijkertijd schoot de inflatie omhoog naar 16,7 procent op jaarbasis. In februari was dat nog 9,2 procent. Voedsel werd 15,7 procent duurder en groente en fruit zelfs bijna 35 procent.

Sancties, sancties en nog meer sancties. Maar wat als de oorlog écht jaren duurt?

De oorlog in Oekraïne zou weleens jaren kunnen duren, denkt NAVO-topman Jens Stoltenberg. De Russen lijken zich deze dagen weliswaar terug te trekken, maar volgens Stoltenberg is dat om op krachten te komen en daarna een nieuw, groot offensief te plaatsen. Nog jarenlang strijd, dat betekent mogelijk ook nog jarenlang economische sancties. Kan dat wel? En raakt 'ons' dat niet meer dan de Russen?

Het korte antwoord op die eerste vraag: ja, de huidige strafmaatregelen kunnen we nog jaren van kracht laten. En dat zou ook niet voor het eerst zijn. Iran, Venezuela en Noord-Korea zijn landen waarbij dat bijvoorbeeld al lang gebeurt, zegt buitenlandexpert Han ten Broeke van het Haags Centrum voor Strategische Studies (HCSS).

"Many people are heavily injured; they lost arms and legs. 30-40 surgeons operate on them simultaneously," said mayor Oleksandr Honcharenko

About 4,000 people fleeing the Donbas region were on the Kramatorsk railway platform when Russian troops fired a ballistic missile into the crowd.

Ukrainian authorities have started an emergency evacuation in Kramatorsk after the strike that left 52 dead, including 5 children.

Russian shipyards halt production of ships due to lack of foreign components - intelligence

According to Ukrinform, the press office of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reported this on Facebook.

"At the Russian shipyards, there is a critical situation in the implementation of existing contracts for the construction and maintenance of warships. It was caused by the difficult financial situation and lack of foreign components," the statement said.

In particular, it is noted that Vostochnaya Verf JSC (Vladivostok) is to execute state orders totaling 35 billion rubles. This includes the construction and supply of two sea tankers, two small rocket ships, two mobile offshore berths, repair and maintenance of ships and boats of various types. At the same time, from the letter of a military representative of the Russian Defense Ministry it becomes clear that by early April 2022 all work has been suspended due to the strained financial situation. Personnel are being laid off, and contract execution deadlines have been disrupted. Specifically, the companies are being prepared to begin bankruptcy proceedings.

The Defense Ministry's Main Intelligence Directorate also reported that another letter from the military representative indicates a total lack of foreign components for the continuation of work on the construction of warships and respective systems. The list of equipment, whose production had to be halted, includes steering columns, navigation systems, and radios, among others. The authors of the letter report that it is impossible to find Russian or Asian substitutes for imported components.

Production of gunpowder charges for naval artillery has also been stopped due to the lack of foreign components and the absence of Russian analogs.

As reported by Ukrinform, at a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson at 10 Downing Street on Friday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that sanctions against Russia are effective, they will deeply affect all sectors of the Russian economy and make it virtually uncompetitive.
