Lithuania to send armoured personnel carriers, ammunition to Ukraine

ithuania will soon provide additional military support to Ukraine as the country is continuing to resist the Russian invasion, the Lithuanian Defence Ministry said in a press release.

Lithuania plans to send to Ukraine M113 and M577 armoured personnel carriers and ammunition for reserve training, the ministry announced on Wednesday.

According to Defence Minister Arvydas Anušauskas, M113 armoured vehicles are becoming an important part of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, and Lithuania is making a significant contribution to that.

His comments followed a virtual meeting of the NATO Ukraine Defence Contact Group.

The Minister also highlighted the role of the countries supporting Ukraine in providing training to the country’s troops. Lithuania has also proposed to organise a wide range of military training for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

“Ukraine has identified its key training needs, and the Lithuanian Armed Forces are ready to meet them. At the moment, a request has been submitted for the training of military policemen and demining specialists. The Lithuanian Armed Forces will also contribute to the large-scale training of Ukrainian personnel in the United Kingdom by sending instructors there,” Anušauskas said.

Lithuanian military assistance provided to Ukraine so far includes Stinger air defence systems, anti-tank weapons, armoured vests and helmets, 120 mm mortars, small arms, ammunition, thermal imaging cameras, drones, anti-drones, surveillance radars, M113 armoured personnel carriers, trucks, and SUVs.

Moreover, Lithuania has handed over to Ukraine a Bayraktar TB2 unmanned aerial vehicle with ammunition bought with money donated by Lithuanian citizens.

In total, Lithuania’s military assistance to Ukraine to date is valued at around 123 million euros.

Rusland: 'Vier van de HIMARS-raketsystemen vernietigd'
Rusland zegt vier van de zo gevreesde HIMARS-raketsystemen te hebben vernietigd in de periode van 5 tot en met 20 juli.
Het Russische ministerie van Defensie publiceerde op 6 juli een video waarop de vernietiging van een HIMARS-systeem te zien zou zijn, enkele dagen nadat de eerste raketsystemen aan Oekraïne waren geleverd. Aan de Oekraïense kant werd deze claim ontkend. Het land deelde met het wapen juist ‘vernietigende klappen’ uit aan de Russen.
Deze week gebruikte Oekraïne de wapens nog om enorme gaten mee in een cruciale brug over De Dnieper te slaan. Door Rusland geïnstalleerde ambtenaren waarschuwde dat de brug bij aanhoudende aanvallen zou instorten.
De raketsystemen hebben volgens sommige analisten en het Oekraïense leger de Oekraïense kansen op het slagveld positief veranderd. Maar volgens de Russen zijn vier van de acht geleverde systemen en een voertuig om de systemen te herladen inmiddels al vernietigd. Persbureau Reuters kon deze claims niet bevestigen.
Het HIMARS-systeem stelt de Oekraïense strijdkrachten instaat om op grotere afstand en zeer nauwkeurig vijandige doelen uit te schakelen. Rusland stelt dat de levering van deze systemen voor de middellange afstand zelfs betekent dat het voor de Russen van groot belang is om een groter Oekraïense gebied in te nemen om ‘zichzelf te beschermen’.
De Verenigde Staten zei woensdag dat het nog vier extra HIMARS-systemen gaat leveren.

Moskou en Kiev bevestigen deelname ceremonie 'graandeal' Istanbul

De Russische en de Oekraïense regering hebben bevestigd dat ze deelnemen aan de ceremonie waarmee volgens Turkije in Istanbul een akkoord wordt getekend voor veilige vaarroutes voor vrachtschepen met Oekraïens graan door de Zwarte Zee. De Turkse regering heeft de plechtige ondertekening in aanwezigheid van president Recep Tayyip Erdogan en VN-chef António Guterres enthousiast aangekondigd, maar zonder de inhoud van het akkoord te onthullen.

Uit Kiev en Moskou werd nog weinig vernomen over de aankondiging. Maar op de valreep meldden beide hoofdsteden dat een minister voor de ondertekening onderweg is naar Istanbul. Moskou heeft minister van Defensie Sergej Sjojgoe gestuurd en Kiev de minister van Infrastructuur, Oleksandr Koebrakov. Een zegsman van de regering van Oekraïne heeft echter beklemtoond dat zijn land geen overeenkomst met Rusland wil sluiten. Oekraïne sluit een overeenkomst met Turkije en met de VN. Die sluiten dan apart een overeenkomst met Rusland.

Het akkoord wordt volgens de plannen om 15.30 uur (Nederlandse tijd) ondertekend. De Turkse regering, die zich lang heeft ingespannen voor dit 'Zwarte Zee Initiatief', heeft een plechtige bijeenkomst georganiseerd in het 19e-eeuwse Dolmabahce Paleis dat aan de zeestraat Bosporus ligt. Door die zeestraat moet straks weer een heleboel Oekraïens graan naar de wereldmarkt varen.

De grote lijnen zijn al uit de eerdere onderhandelingen gesijpeld. Vaarroutes moeten worden vrijgemaakt van mijnen, ladingen van vrachtschepen worden geïnspecteerd, zowel bij het naderen van bijvoorbeeld de haven van Odessa als bij het uitvaren, Rusland misbruikt de veilige vaarroutes niet voor oorlogsdoeleinden en de EU schrapt handelssancties tegen Rusland die een belemmering vormen voor de Russische export van vooral voedsel. Er komt een coördinatiecentrum van de VN in Istanbul voor de uitvoering van alle taken. Er komen "mechanismen" voor de beveiliging van de hele vaarroute naar de Bosporus.

Turkije heeft aangeboden de marine in te zetten voor onder meer de inspecties van schepen en voor het ruimen van mijnen. Nederland heeft tijdens eerdere onderhandelingen bijna een maand geleden ook mijnenjagers aangeboden voor de missie om de Zwarte Zee voor Oekraïens graan met veilige vaarroutes te heropenen.

Het Kremlin eist wel dat de Europese Unie daadwerkelijk sancties tegen Rusland verlicht en het niet bij toezeggingen of beloftes laat. Regeringswoordvoerster Maria Zacharova zei in Moskou dat er doorgaans jammer genoeg een enorme kloof gaapt tussen de intenties van de EU en de daadwerkelijke stappen die de unie zet. Volgens haar zijn "de kortzichtige Europese sancties" overigens de voornaamste oorzaak van de voedselcrisis in de wereld.

Hoop wel dat men ervan uitgaat dat de Russen onbetrouwbaar zijn. Zo wijs zal men toch wel zijn.
Dus doorgaan met het opzetten van transportmogelijkheden per spoor, over de weg en per binnenvaartschip.
Hoop dat politici nu eens helder denken.

EU announces additional 500 million euros in military aid to Ukraine

The European Union announced Friday it has approved an additional 500 million euros ($510 million) in military aid to Ukraine.

These “two assistance measures under the European Peace Facility (EPF) [are] aimed to step up the EU's support for the capabilities and resilience of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to defend the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the country, and protect the civilian population against the ongoing Russian military aggression,” the European Council said in a statement.

The additional 500 million euros bring EU’s total military aid package to Ukraine to 2.5 billion euros ($2.55 billion), according to the Council.

“The EU remains focused and steadfast in its support for Ukraine in its fight for freedom and independence. Ukraine needs more arms; we will provide them. In this context, EU member states agreed to mobilize a fifth tranche of military assistance of 500 million euros, making this a total of 2.5 billion euros of military equipment to the Ukrainian Armed Forces,” according to Josep Borrell, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

Russia's ability to spy in Europe has been cut in half, UK intelligence chief says

The chief of Britain’s foreign intelligence service believes that Russia has lost its ability to spy in Europe “by half,” following the expulsion of more than 400 Russian intelligence officers from cities across Europe and the arrest of several deep-cover spies posing as civilians.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February, European countries have expelled “north of 400 Russian intelligence officers operating under diplomatic cover” across the bloc, Richard Moore, the head of MI6, the UK's foreign intelligence service, told CNN’s Jim Sciutto at the Aspen Security Forum.

“And we reckon, in the UK, that has probably reduced their ability to do their business to spy for Russia in Europe by half,” Moore said.

A number of “illegals,” or Russian spies operating under deep cover and masquerading as ordinary civilians, have also been exposed and arrested in recent months, he added.

Asked whether the war in Ukraine has made Russia a “target-rich environment” for the UK and its allies to recruit potential assets, Moore would only say that “it is our hope” that Russians in the intelligence and diplomatic services will “reflect on what they are witnessing in Ukraine” and decide to “strike back against the system” as many did during the Prague Spring in 1968.

“Our door is always open,” he said.

Ukraine sailors training on ship in Scottish waters

While the training has been common knowledge in defence circles, many (myself included) were asked not to promote it due to security concerns. As of this morning, however, the news has been made public.

A Royal Navy mine hunter captain involved in the training told BBC Scotland here:

“It’s clearly a very difficult situation in Ukraine at the moment. We all understand the urgency of the task at hand. So it’s a professional privilege to be working with the Ukrainian navy, who are incredibly focused on getting the job done. And that’s motivating for my team to be able to give them the best training we possibly can.”

The Royal Navy is training Ukrainian sailors to operate the vessel after two of the class, HMS Blyth and HMS Ramsey, were sold to Ukraine prior to the invasion.

The BBC also reported that Ukrainian Deputy Defence Minister Volodymr Havrylov and UK Armed Forces Minister James Heappey were on board for some time to see the training.

“They observed recruits learning weapon drills, damage control and how to operate the machinery on the vessels.”

I have also been told by a source that there are over 100 Ukrainian sailors staying at Rosyth to take part in the training, more on this as details emerge.

British warship tracks Russian submarines into North Sea

HMS Portland tracked Russian cruise missile submarine Severodvinsk and Akula-class attack submarine Vepr as they made their underwater journey south along the Norwegian coast from the Arctic.

In a news release, the Royal Navy say that the Type 23 frigate shadowed the submarines as they surfaced separately in the North Sea, north west of Bergen, Norway, on July 16 and 19, before NATO and Baltic forces took over duties as they continued to St Petersburg for Russian Navy Day celebrations on July 31.

“Portland and her specialist Merlin helicopter – both equipped with cutting-edge sonars, sensors and torpedoes for submarine-hunting operations – reported on the movements of the Russian Northern Fleet vessels. One of the RAF’s new long-range maritime patrol aircraft, the P8 Poseidon, also worked closely with HMS Portland to hunt and track the submarines.

This operation comes soon after HMS Portland took part in NATO’s premiere submarine-hunting exercise. This large scale joint exercise proved to be the ideal prelude for this type of live operation.”

HMS Portland’s Commanding Officer, Commander Tim Leeder, was quoted as saying:

“Our success on operations marks the culmination of many months of specialist training and exercises. Critically, the cohesiveness of Royal Navy, RAF and our allies capabilities ensures that we are capable of conducting and sustaining these types of anti-submarine operations in the North Atlantic. It is testament to my sailors’ dedication and professionalism, alongside that of our allies, that we are able to conduct this strategically crucial role.”

The US has given Ukraine 12 units so far, with another four on the way, Milley said.

His remarks followed several Russian claims to have destroyed as many as four of them.

In a briefing reported by the state-operated media outlet Zvezda, a Russian defense ministry representative said Russian forces had destroyed four HIMARS launchers from July 5 to Wednesday.

A July 6 Russian MOD Telegram post said two of these were taken out in Malotaranovka in the Donbas along with two ammunition depots for the weapon.

Milley didn't specifically address the Russian claims in his briefing, instead saying in broad terms that the HIMARS hadn't been destroyed.

When Insider approached the Pentagon for comment, a representative pointed to a July 8 briefing during which an unnamed senior defense official said the Russian claims were "not correct." Insider requested an updated response to the most recent Russian claims.

The Russian Ministry of Defense didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from Insider.
As well as supplying the units themselves, the Pentagon is sending hundreds of rounds for them and providing training in how to use them.

Milley said the HIMARS had been used "against Russian command-and-control nodes, their logistical networks, their field artillery near defense sites, and many other targets," adding that strikes made by HIMARS were "steadily degrading" Russia's efforts.

CNN footage shot from the Ukrainian front line in the Donbas in early July showed a HIMARS in operation, clearly prized by its Ukrainian operators.

As Insider's Alia Shoaib reported, Ukraine has been forced to switch tactics since Russia began to focus its efforts in the east of the country, where Russia has made significant gains.

If Russia is held back, commentators are predicting a bloody "slugfest" in which a lengthy stalemate is possible.

Rusland wordt binnen enkele dagen gedwongen zich terug te trekken uit Cherson'

Volgens Dr. Mike Martin, onderzoeker in oorlogsstudies aan King's College London, zijn de Russen niet veel langer in staat om de strategisch belangrijke stad Cherson te verdedigen. Ze worden mogelijk binnenkort gedwongen om zich binnen een week terug te trekken.

Het was de plek van een van de hevigste gevechten in het conflict, maar de expert voorspelt dat Poetin een terugtrekking door zijn troepen in de komende 10 dagen een gebaar van "goede wil" zou kunnen noemen.

Dr. Martin zegt dat de oorlog zich momenteel "op een zeer interessant punt" bevindt en wijst op operationele onderbrekingen van de gevechten in de Donbas.

Zelenski wil geen wapenstilstand zolang Rusland grondgebied bezet

De Oekraïense president Volodimir Zelenski is niet geïnteresseerd in een wapenstilstand zolang Rusland delen van Oekraïne bezet. "Dat verlengt de oorlog alleen maar", zei hij in een interview met The Wall Street Journal. En: "Het conflict met Rusland bevriezen zou Rusland de kans geven om op adem te komen."

Bovendien zou een wapenstilstand onder de huidige omstandigheden - Rusland controleert grote delen van de oostelijke Donbas-regio - niet de wil zijn van het Oekraïense volk, stelde Zelenski in hetzelfde interview. "De maatschappij vindt dat we eerst al het grondgebied moeten heroveren. Daarna kijken we wat we kunnen doen."

Een vergelijkbare attitude toonde Zelenski ten opzichte van vredesgesprekken: "Diplomatieke concessies aan Moskou zouden de markten wellicht tijdelijk ietwat stabiliseren, maar zouden op termijn als een boemerang werken."

Vooralsnog zoekt de president zijn heil in militaire middelen. Dus herhaalde Zelenski zijn verzoeken om meer wapens van het Westen maar weer eens. Zo prees hij de recente leveringen door de VS van Himars-raketsystemen door te zeggen dat die een "daadwerkelijk verschil maken", maar voegde eraan toe dat ze lang niet genoeg zijn voor Oekraïne om het tij te keren. "Een nog dringender behoefte zijn luchtafweersystemen die de inslag van langeafstandsraketten kunnen voorkomen."

Leuk land, het zou wat zijn, als onze regering tanks zou gaan inzetten tegen de boerenprotesten. Ons kleine landje zou te klein zijn. Gelukkig leveren ze materieel aan Oekraïne. Een wat gullere hand zou wellicht nog beter zijn, ook voor ons kleine landje op de langere termijn.

Ja, dat is echt slim: Rusland met al je macht terugdringen, vernederen, vol gaan voor regime-change. Wat zou Poetin gaan doen ? De val van zijn regime zonder slag of stoot accepteren ? Of toch maar voor die first strike gaan ? Wel spannend hoor ! En dat allemaal voor Oekraïne, een voorbeeld in de wereld als het om democratisch en niet corrupt zijn gaat...
