MOL & Mitsui Sign Time Charter Contract for LNG Carrier

Mitsui OSK Lines Ltd announced that on January 28, 2022, it concluded a time charter contract for a newbuilding 174,000 cubic meters type LNG carrier with Mitsui & Co Ltd. MOL will provide ship management services for the vessel, which will be engaged to transport LNG mainly for Mitsui & Co projects around the world. The vessel is equipped with the cutting-edge MAN Energy Solutions engine, which improved fuel efficiency. It also adopts more environment-friendly specifications than current LNG carriers.

Beursblik: Shell beter dan verwacht
Dankzij LNG.

(ABM FN-Dow Jones) Shell heeft in het vierde kwartaal beter dan verwacht gepresteerd dankzij meevallende prestaties bij LNG. Dit concludeerde analist Quirijn Mulder van ING donderdag.

"Al met al goede resultaten", vindt de analist.

Ook merkte Mulder op dat Shell de aandeelhouder goed verwend, met een dividendverhoging en meer eigen aandelen die worden ingekocht.

"En de outlook wijst op een goed jaar met olieprijzen stevig boven de 80 dollar en de gasprijzen op een erg aantrekkelijk niveau", aldus Mulder.

ING handhaafde het Houden advies met een koersdoel van 20,50 euro. Het aandeel Shell steeg donderdag 0,7 procent naar 23,38 euro.

BHP Welcomes LNG-Fueled Iron Ore Carrier Mt Tourmaline

BHP has welcomed MV Mt Tourmaline, world’s first LNG-fuelled Newcastlemax bulk carrier, that will transport iron ore between Western Australia and Asia from 2022. BHP has chartered five LNG-fuelled Newcastlemax bulk carriers from Eastern Pacific Shipping for five years and awarded the LNG fuel contract to Shell. On her maiden voyage, the vessel arrived at Jurong Port in Singapore for her first LNG bunkering operation which will take place through the first LNG bunker vessel in Singapore, the FueLNG Bellina. FueLNG, a joint venture between Shell Eastern Petroleum and Keppel Offshore & Marine, operates the bunker vessel.

After LNG bunkering, the 209,000-deadweight tonne vessel will leave for Port Hedland in Western Australia for Iron Ore loading operations.

McDermott's CB&I Named Tank Contractor for Plaquemines LNG

McDermott's storage business CB&I has been awarded a contract by Venture Global Plaquemines LNG for two 200,000 cubic-meter liquefied natural gas storage tanks as part of the first phase of the Plaquemines LNG export project. Located on the Mississippi River, 20 miles south of New Orleans, Plaquemines LNG is expected to have a combined export capacity of up to 20 million metric tonnes per year. The phase one scope for CB&I includes the engineering, procurement and construction of two full containment concrete LNG storage tanks with associated foundations, tank top mechanical systems and pipe racks extending to the main facility.

CB&I recently achieved ready for cooldown as scheduled for two LNG tanks of similar size and scope for the Venture Global Calcasieu Pass LNG project.

Bij Vopak draait het steeds minder om olie

Nog slechts een derde van de omzet van tankopslagbedrijf VPK€30,13-4,35% Vopak komt uit olie. Een paar jaar geleden was olie nog goed voor bijna de helft van de jaarlijkse omzet. Dat blijkt uit de jaarcijfers van Vopak, die het bedrijf woensdagochtend presenteerde.

De teruggang van het aandeel olie in de omzet is het gevolg van een vermindering van de vraag naar olie in 2021. Maar ook de groeistrategie van het bedrijf richting industriële opslag en opslag van LNG speelt een rol. Sinds 2014 heeft het bedrijf tien olieterminals afgestoten en woensdag maakte het bedrijf bekend nog eens vier olieterminals in Canada te willen verkopen.

Dalende beurskoersen
De omzet en winstcijfers over 2021 liggen in lijn met de verwachtingen van analisten van Bloomberg. De omzet groeide met 3,9% naar €1,23 mrd en de nettowinst kwam uit op €298 mln.

De operationele winst (ebit) van Vopak blijft ondertussen afnemen. In 2021 kwam de operationele winst uit op €410 mln, tegenover €484 mln in 2020 en €748 mln in 2019.

Beleggers reageerden negatief op het jaarbericht. Het aandeel Vopak noteerde na vijftien minuten handel ruim 5% lager op €29,91.

Volgens ceo Dick Richelle kenmerkte 2021 zich door een hoge volatiliteit en een lagere vraag naar opslag in de hele industrie vanwege krappe voorraden. In een persbericht zegt de topman tevreden te zijn met de veerkracht van het bedrijf en de hoogte van de brutobedrijfswinst (ebitda). Vopak kondigt een dividenduitkering aan van €1,25 per aandeel, 4% meer dan vorig jaar.

Vopak profiteert van de wereldwijde toegenomen vraag naar LNG. Samen met Gasunie bezit Vopak de enige LNG-terminal van Nederland in Rotterdam, die aan het eind van 2021 op volle capaciteit draaide. Het bedrijf kondigt aan de capaciteit van deze Gate Terminal met nog eens 12,5% te verhogen in 2024.

Vopak heeft het ondertussen niet gemakkelijk op de beurs. In het afgelopen jaar daalde het aandeel Vopak van rond de €40 naar rond €30. Opvallend, aangezien beurskoersen van opdrachtgevers als Shell en TotalEnergies het flink beter doen.

MOL Charter for Ice-Breaking Tanker for Arctic LNG 2 Project

Mitsui OSK Lines Ltd announced that on January 26, it agreed to participate in cargo transport for the Arctic LNG 2 Project on Russia’s Gydan Peninsula, and signed, through an MOL subsidiary, a charter contract for a newbuilding ice-breaking tanker with the project company, whose largest shareholder is Russia-based PAO NOVATEK. The vessel will be constructed at Guangzhou Shipyard International Company Limited, (which is a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited and is slated for delivery in 2024. This contract follows the October 2020 signing of charter contracts for three ice-breaking LNG vessels to serve for the same project. The vessel will transport condensate from the LNG/condensate plant inside the Arctic Circle on the Gydan Peninsula, mainly to Europe (westbound) via the Northern Sea Route.

'Noors Exmar' maakt debuut in Oslo

Het is gezellig druk op de beurs van Oslo. Cool Company tekende er vanochtend voor de vierde beursgang dit jaar. In Brussel staat de teller nog steeds op nul. Je zou in de naam een hippe start-up vermoeden, maar Cool Company is een vervoerder van vloeibaar aardgas (LNG).

De sectorgenoot van de Belgische gastankerij Exmar EXM -1,98% heeft 8 gastankers gekocht van het Noors-Britse Golar. Die naam klinkt bij Exmar bekend in de oren: Golar en Exmar werkten twintig jaar geleden een tijdlang aan een fusie van hun LNG-vloot, maar die bleef dode letter. De twee bedrijven werken wel regelmatig samen op grote projecten, onder meer op het gasveld Leviathan voor de kust van Israël en Libanon.

Luidens het persbericht van Euronext is het de bedoeling van Cool Company om als consolidator op te treden in de markt. De introductieprijs van 87,5 Noorse kroon per aandeel waardeert het bedrijf op 2,475 miljard Noorse kroon (245 miljoen euro). Dat is gelijkaardig aan de beurswaarde van Exmar.

NSR Voyage Delivers Module for NOVATEK’s Arctic LNG 2

NOVATEK announced that the Arc7 ice-class module carrier AUDAX completed its voyage along the Northern Sea Route long after the traditional navigation season closure, to deliver a process module weighing almost 12,000 tonnes for Arctic LNG 2 from the Chinese port of Tianjin to Murmansk. The module will be installed on the gravity-based structure for Arctic LNG 2 Train 1 at the LNG Construction Center in Belokamenka.

This voyage is unique in terms of a vessel of this size passing the entire Northern Sea Route with a nuclear icebreaker support in February in challenging ice conditions. The Atomflot icebreakers escorted the vessel along the Northern Sea Route. The icebreaker assistance was difficult largely due to navigation specifics during winter 2022. The current NSR navigation season saw severer ice conditions compared to previous years and the summer-fall navigation period ended in the beginning of November 2021, much earlier than in previous years. Due to the size of AUDAX, icebreaker assistance in the route's most challenging sections in the Chukchi, East Siberian and Kara Seas involved two icebreakers widening the ice channel.

The successful completion of the voyage testifies to the reliability of the Company's logistics model and the possibility of year-round LNG deliveries via the Northern Sea Route to the Asia Pacific region.

Gasunie bouwt nieuwe LNG-terminal

(ABM FN-Dow Jones) Gasunie zal de komende tijd extra stappen zetten om de leveringszekerheid van gas voor Nederland, Duitsland en Europa veilig te stellen en gaat aan de slag met de aanleg van een nieuwe opslagterminal voor LNG in het Duitse Brunsbüttel. Dit maakte de beheerder van energie-infrastructuur in Nederland en Duitsland maandag bekend, nadat de Duitse Bondskanselier Olaf Scholz deze plannen zondag al aankondigde in zijn toespraak in de Bondsdag.

Gasunie hoopt nog dit jaar te kunnen starten met het aanleggen van de terminal.

Ook onderzoekt Gasunie de mogelijkheden om nog dit jaar de importcapaciteit voor LNG in Nederland verder te vergroten.

Gasunie zet deze stappen in nauwe samenwerking met de Nederlandse en Duitse regering. Gasunie bevriest daarnaast alle non-operationele relaties en contacten met Russische bedrijven zoals Gazprom.

Overigens kondigde Scholz de bouw van twee energie-importterminals aan.

ADNOC L&S Charters Floating Storage Unit to AG&P

ADNOC Logistics & Services & Atlantic Gulf & leading downstream LNG platform and infrastructure development company Pacific International Holdings a have signed a charter agreement to utilize ADNOC L&S’s LNG Carrier Ish as a Floating Storage Facility. Under the terms of the agreement, starting Q3 2022, AG&P will use the carrier for the first LNG Import Terminal in the Philippines at Ilijan in Batangas Bay, PHLNG. The agreement, which is valid for 11 years with the option of extension by 4 years, strengthens an existing relationship between the two companies and builds on a previous agreement between the two companies to provide another FSU in India, signed in 2021. It continues ADNOC L&S’ ongoing drive to diversify its customer base and enhance revenue streams.

The vessel is part of a fleet of eight LNG vessels operated by ADNOC L&S and is currently under contract to ADNOC LNG, a subsidiary of ADNOC. Upon the conclusion of its contract with ADNOC LNG, the Ish will be deployed to AG&P as a floating storage facility, extending the vessel’s life by at least 11 years and up to 15 years, and bolstering ADNOC L&S’ recently established FSU revenue stream, while providing PHLNG’s customers with resiliency of supply.

The supply, operations and maintenance of the FSU will be undertaken by ADNOC L&S while the conversion of the LNG Carrier to FSU will be completed by AG&P subsidiary, GAS Entec. PHLNG will be the 5th FSU-based LNG import terminal in the world, after those in India, Malta, Malaysia, and Bahrain. The integrated PHLNG offshore/onshore import terminal will have an initial capacity of 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA).

The Ish is part of ADNOC L&S’ diverse fleet of more than 200 vessels, which, when combined with its 1.5 million square meter logistics base in Abu Dhabi and its integrated logistics capabilities, make the company the region’s leading marine logistics provider. The Ish was built in 1995 in Japan and has a capacity of 137,315.444 cubic meters of LNG. At the time of its inauguration was one of the largest LNG vessels in the world.

Shell Signs 5-Year Contract with KONGSBERG for JAWS

KONGSBERG announced that Shell has just signed a five-year contract for the installation of its JAWS, Just Add Water System, software on board 45 of the LNG carriers chartered by Shell. These are LNG carriers which already utilize the Kongsberg Maritime K-IMS Information Management System application suite.

JAWS is a user-friendly hydrodynamic optimisation program, with no additional instrumentation required. It calculates the most advantageous operating conditions in real time based on algorithms developed from historic high-frequency vessel data. The system continually issues recommendations for optimal trim and draft, helping crews to cut fuel consumption and GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions. JAWS provides live data that allows ship and fleet managers to monitor and report emissions savings.

K-IMS, meanwhile, is a web-based solution which gives both ship crews and shore teams continual access to crucial voyage and vessel data. The provision of JAWS as an application within the K-IMS suite renders it instantly available to all K-IMS users.

The contract signing follows a successful year-long trial, co-conducted by KONGSBERG, Shell and the LNG shipping services provider Gaslog, on board the LNG carrier Methane Julia Louise. The vessel’s shaft energy consumption was recorded for nine months prior to the JAWS installation, as well as throughout the year-long trial with the JAWS software installed, and the trial demonstrated that JAWS could provide a significant fuel saving for the vessel.

RINA Grants AiP for LNG & Hydrogen-Fuelled MR Tanker

RINA has announced the Approval in Principle of Swedish designer FKAB Marine Design’s hydrogen powered MR Tanker, the first AiP of a design using currently viable technology and fuels that achieves IMO 2050 targets. Conceived by the class society and designed by FKAB, the propulsion is based on combining the ship’s fuel with steam to produce hydrogen and CO2. The MR LNG & hydrogen-fuelled vessel is the result of a joint project with ABB and Helbio, a subsidiary of Metacon AB.

The MR tanker design is based on combining LNG with steam in a Helbio gas reformer to split LNG molecules into hydrogen and CO2. Hydrogen is then directly used to fuel the internal combustion engines and fuel cells in a hybrid marine power system by ABB. The CO2 is captured by splitting the LNG molecules, rather than from exhaust gas.

Using this design, hydrogen usage can be progressively increased to maintain a top CII rating throughout the life of the ship, reducing CO2 emissions in a parallel slope with the applicable regulations. The ship can meet full decarbonisation targets by either running the engine on 100% hydrogen, or by producing all the power needed by fuel cells. In this way, the owner can decide the rate of CO2 reduction.

CO2 is liquefied by the cryogenic steam from the LNG and can be used as the inert gas for the tanker. No additional bunkering, aside from normal LNG, is required. The hydrogen produced can be used to power the main engine, or fuel cells, or a hybrid of the two. The AiP covers the hybrid option.

ExxonMobil & Papua New Guinea Sign P’nyang Gas Agreement

ExxonMobil subsidiary Esso PNG P’nyang Limited, Ampolex Limited, and the Independent State of Papua New Guinea have signed the P’nyang project gas agreement for the proposed development of the P’nyang LNG project. Subject to a final investment decision by the P’nyang project co-venturers, the ExxonMobil-operated P’nyang project would deliver LNG by constructing new upstream facilities in Western Province linked to existing infrastructure. The agreement provides the fiscal framework for the project and supports project scoping and evaluation. The P’nyang field is estimated to have 4.36 trillion cubic feet of gas.

The P’nyang development in Western Province is proposed to commence following the Papua LNG project, which will be located in Gulf Province. The phased approach to gas development would support ongoing economic growth in Papua New Guinea. The P’nyang project will be an independent project with landowner benefits to be provided under a future benefit sharing agreement to be negotiated by the State in accordance with the Oil and Gas Act.

ExxonMobil is continuing to work with the government regarding their interest in purchasing additional equity in the project.

The P’nyang project would provide about four years of additional construction activity after Papua LNG and drive economic benefits for the country and participating provinces. Upon completion, the P’nyang Project would make available up to five percent of gas produced to Western Province or another agreed location to support the government’s electrification efforts.

NYK LNG Carrier Elisa Aquila for Edison Delivered

On March 3, the liquefied natural gas carrier Elisa Aquila commercially managed by France LNG Shipping and under a long-term charter contract with Edison SPA, a Milan-based energy company, was delivered to NYK. Elisa Aquila is propelled by WinGD-manufactured, dual-fuel slow-speed diesel engines and features an Air Liquide–manufactured Turbo-Brayton refrigeration system that can tap surplus boil-off gas. Manufactured by GTT, the 174,000-cubic meter capacity membrane-type tank will be made of advanced insulating materials that reduce the vaporization rate.

KfW, Gasunie & RWE Sign MoU for LNG Terminal in Brunsbüttel

The KfW, on behalf of the German Federal Government, Gasunie (100% owned by the Dutch state), and RWE signed a Memorandum of Understanding on a joint project to build a terminal for the import of liquefied natural gas at Brunsbüttel. The KfW will acquire 50% of the shares in the LNG terminal for the Federal Government. Gasunie will operate the facility. The terminal will have an annual regasification capacity of 8 billion m3 and provide a possibility to import gas directly to the German market from regions which cannot be reached by gas pipelines. In this way, the project will improve Germany’s energy security and help north-western Europe to become less dependent on imports of gas through pipelines. The partners in the project are working to realise the venture as quickly as possible whilst complying with all the rules governing authorisations and State aid.

Going forward, the intention will be to refit the terminal so that it can process green hydrogen derivatives like ammonia.

Exmar vindt huurder voor hervergassingseenheid

Exmar EXM 0,00% heeft een contract beet voor de FSRU S188, zijn drijvende hervergassingseenheid. Het tuig wordt voor 5 jaar verhuurd aan Gasunie LNG Holdings. Het zal als lng-importterminal worden ingezet in Eemshaven in Groningen.

Dat Exmar nu plots een huurder vindt voor de FSRU, heeft ongetwijfeld te maken met ‘de geopolitieke ontwikkelingen die momenteel gaande zijn in Europa’ (lees: de Russische invasie in Oekraïne) en ‘de toegenomen druk van regeringen op de zekerheid van de energievoorziening’.

Samsung & Lilama to Build LNG Power Plant in Vietnam

South Korean contractor Samsung C&T has formed a joint venture with Vietnamese counterpart Lilama to build one of Vietnam’s first power stations to be fuelled by liquefied natural gas. The USD 940 million engineering, procurement and construction deal involves the construction of two 750MW plants at an existing site in the southern province of Dong Nai. Nhon Trach 3 and 4 will be developed over the course of 36 months with generation to start sometime between 2024 and 2025. Whether it will be Vietnam’s first LNG plant depends on progress at an even larger plant in Long An province, to the east of Ho Chi Minh City. This is being built by a consortium led by South Korea’s GS Energy and local developer VinaCapital.

Other LNG plants are planned by Singaporean company Delta Offshore Energy in the Mekong delta province of Bac Lieu in 2024 and Exxon Mobil hopes to build the largest of them all: a $5bn plant in the northern port city of Haiphong (see further reading).

Canadees gasproject kan worden versneld om Europa te bevoorraden

NEWFOUNDLAND (ANP/BLOOMBERG) - Een project voor vloeibaar gemaakt aardgas (lng) voor de kust van de Canadese provincie Newfoundland zou vervroegd kunnen worden uitgevoerd om sneller gas te kunnen leveren aan Europa als alternatief voor Russisch gas. Het bedrijf achter het project heeft sinds de Russische invasie van Oekraïne al veel interesse gehad van potentiële kopers in Europa, waaronder Duitsland.

Het project van LNG Newfoundland en Labrador om aardgas uit de offshoreolieproductie te winnen en vloeibaar te maken, zou met twee jaar kunnen worden vervroegd. Daarmee zou het bedrijf in 2028 kunnen beginnen met leveren, zei topman Leo Power van het bedrijf. De exportterminal zal jaarlijks 2,6 miljoen ton vloeibaar gemaakt aardgas kunnen produceren.

Het project zou het voordeel hebben dat Newfoundland, de meest oostelijk gelegen provincie van Canada, bijna de helft van de afstand tot Europa is dan de lng-terminals in de Golf van Mexico. Ook wordt de fabriek aangedreven door waterkracht, waardoor de uitstoot minimaal zou blijven, aldus Power.

Ing-fabrieken

Canada heeft momenteel geen lng-fabrieken en hoewel er talloze projecten zijn voorgesteld, is er momenteel slechts één in aanbouw voor de kust van de Stille Oceaan. De Canadese regering is echter wel in gesprek met Europese landen om hen uiteindelijk aardgas te leveren, zei Jonathan Wilkinson, de minister van Natuurlijke Hulpbronnen, vorige week.

Gasprojecten op de Atlantische Oceaan kampen met grote uitdagingen. Een voorstel van Énergie Saguenay voor een lng-fabriek in Quebec werd door zowel de federale als de provinciale overheid afgewezen. ‘Exmar vindt dit jaar werk voor Tango'

Kepler Cheuvreux denkt dat de huidige marktomstandigheden Exmar EXM 0,83% in de kaart spelen om een nieuwe contract af te sluiten voor de drijvende lng-fabriek Tango FLNG.

Er is momenteel een zeer groot prijsverschil tussen de gemiddelde Europese lng-prijs en de Amerikaanse lng-prijs. Voor 2023 bedraagt de gemiddelde Europese prijs 23 dollar per mmbtu (metric million British thermal unit), voor 2024 is dat 18 dollar en voor 2025 15 dollar. Voor Amerikaanse lng is dat slechts 3,9 dollar voor de periode 2023-2025.

De analist heeft zijn model aangepast aan een ‘LNG arbitrage trade’ en denkt dat de verhuur van de Tango 35 miljoen dollar aan brutobedrijfswinst (ebitda) kan opbrengen.

‘De lng-prijzen en de vooruitzichten voor de vraag naar lng in Europa maken van de Tango FLNG in onze ogen een zeer aantrekkelijk bezit. Aangezien het de enige FLNG is die beschikbaar is om snel te worden ingezet, geloven we dat Exmar tijdens 2022 er zal in slagen tewerkstelling te vinden.’

Het advies van Kepler Cheuvreux blijft ‘kopen’, het koersdoel bedraagt 6,20 euro.
