Biogen Options Trade on Takeover Rumors

Stock and options traders are piling into Biogen Idec(BIIB Quote - Cramer on BIIB - Stock Picks) on speculation that the drugmaker could be a takeover target.
About 75,000 options contracts traded on the name, more than 10 times the average over the last 20 sessions. About two-thirds of the volume is in calls, according to OptionMonster's tracking systems.

Most of the buying is focused on options expiring this month and next. Some 21,500 contracts have changed hands for the April 55 strikes, plus another 13,400 for the April 60 strikes. Both contracts, plus the May 60 calls, traded in volumes that exceeded open interest.

Biogen Idec stock rose 6.5% today to $52.85 on volume of about 6.4 million, almost twice the average level. Rumors circulated among European trading desks suggested French pharmaceuticals giant Sanofi-Aventis may offer to buy Biogen for at least $75 a share, according to Reuters.

De onderhandelingen tussen Novartis en andere gegadigden voor Crucell zijn bijna rond.
Boekenonderzoek is hier van minder belang.
Het belangrijkste is dat andere grote pharma's de overname door Novartis goedkeuren (waarbij Novartis waarschijnlijk een aantal concessies moet doen).
Grote pharma's in US en Europa werken heel veel samen.
Biedingstrijd tussen deze pharma's komt weinig voor.

De onderhandelingen tussen Novartis en andere gegadigden voor Crucell zijn bijna rond.

PARIS, April 9 (Reuters) - France's Sanofi-Aventis (SASY.PA)
plans to buy Brazilian drugmaker Medley in a deal that values
the company at 500 million euros ($664 million) and will turn
Sanofi into the top generics manufacturer in Latin America.
The acquisition follows several small and mid-sized
takeovers and partnership deals Sanofi has struck as it seeks to
cope with expiring patents and generic drugmakers eager to copy
some of its key drugs.
Sanofi said on Thursday it had signed an agreement to buy
Medley to give it a 12 percent share of Brazil's drug market.
Growth in the country's generic drugs market was expected to
exceed 20 percent annually in the coming years.
"This acquisition meets two strategic points: on the one
hand it allows Sanofi to strengthen ... in prescription drugs,
on the other it considerably boosts its presence in an emerging
fast-growing country," CM-CIC Securities analyst Arsene Guekam
said in a research note, rating Sanofi shares "buy".
Next to branded drugs, Medley has more than 127 generic
drugs in its portfolio and made sales of about 153 million euros
last year. Medley is Brazil's third-largest drugmaker and top
maker of cheap copies of drugs patented by other companies.
The company's value of 500 million euros included 170
million euros of debt, a Sanofi spokesman said.
Sanofi shares were 0.4 percent lower at 41.805 euros by 0924
GMT, slightly outperforming a 0.5 percent drop on the DJ Stoxx
European health index .SXDP.
Chief Executive Chris Viehbacher is aiming to grow Sanofi
through partnerships and takeovers worth up to 15 billion euros
in over-the-counter drugs, vaccines and generics, as well as
expanding in fast-growing emerging markets.
Sanofi's name has been linked to many unconfirmed deals,
such as the possible takeover of the drug unit of Solvay
(SOLB.BR) in Belgium, U.S. biotech Biogen Idec (BIIB.O), Dutch
vaccine maker Crucell (CRCL.AS) and India's Piramal Healthcare
(PIRA.BO) and Shantha Biotech.
But Viehbacher, who became CEO in December, told Reuters
last month that Sanofi would look beyond conventional medicine
to animal health and certain medical devices.
Sanofi said earlier this month it bought small-sized Mexican
generics maker Laboratorios Kendrick, while it made its first
big move in generics with the $2 billion acquisition of Czech
Zentiva, propelling it to 11th from 23rd biggest generics maker.

Sanofi Buys BiPar, Milestones May Reach $500 Million By Angela Cullen

April 15 (Bloomberg) -- Sanofi-Aventis SA agreed to buy privately held U.S. biopharmaceutical company BiPar Sciences Inc., gaining technology that may be useful in developing new cancer treatments.

The final purchase price will include payments of as much as $500 million tied to development goals for BiPar’s BSI-201 product candidate that is in mid-stage testing for breast cancer, ovarian cancer and other malignancies, the Paris-based drugmaker said in an e-mailed statement today. Sanofi expects to complete the transaction this quarter.

The acquisition follows Sanofi’s $680 million
purchase of Brazil’s Medley SA and the takeover of Mexico’s Laboratorios Kendrick earlier this month. The French company also bought Czech generic-drug maker Zentiva NV for more than $2 billion, expanding in emerging markets. BiPar adds technology that prevents cancer cells from repairing their own DNA, killing the tumor.

Kanker toepassingen ontwikkelen op menselijke
