Updated Gisteren, 23:35
Gisteren, 20:13
in FINANCIEEL

FOTO ANP/HH

Hydrogen Vessels: KIMM's Breakthrough Infrastructure

By Strategic Research Institute on Jun 14, 2023 11:04 am

The Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials has taken the lead in establishing cutting-edge infrastructure to support the development and commercialization of environment-friendly vessels within the domestic shipbuilding sector. Through a collaborative endeavor with Korean Register and Pusan National University, KIMM has procured essential equipment for evaluating the compatibility of materials used for storing liquid hydrogen, presenting a pioneering evaluation process.

The research team, led by Jong-won Park, Head of the Department of Reliability Assessment at KIMM's Mechanical Systems Safety Research Division, and Senior Researcher Yong-jin Kim, in joint research with KIMM's Department of 3D Printing and Pusan National University, has acquired the necessary equipment for testing and analyzing ultra-low temperatures (minus 253 degrees Celsius) and hydrogen embrittlement. Furthermore, they have released a comprehensive report on the selection of materials suitable for storing liquid hydrogen in vessels, which meticulously analyzes safety standards and material compatibility assessment methods across various sectors.

The storage systems for liquid hydrogen in vessels must withstand ultra-low temperatures and hydrogen embrittlement, with material selection contingent upon the specific utilization and operational conditions of the stored hydrogen. Unfortunately, both domestically and globally, safety regulations that align with the diverse conditions, including ultra-low temperatures and vessel-specific characteristics, have been lacking. This void has posed challenges for companies seeking to penetrate the market for environment-friendly vessels. However, KIMM's latest research provides a robust proposal of materials and requirements applicable to the liquid hydrogen environment. By addressing the discrepancies with materials and requirements for domestic LNG storage systems and establishing standards under various environments, this research is poised to drive the development of technologies for eco-friendly vessels.

Remarkably, the evaluation and testing of material compatibility for ultra-low temperatures and hydrogen environments are available only at a select few research institutes worldwide. As a consequence, significant expenses are incurred during the test and evaluation processes, hindering domestic material and equipment manufacturers from venturing into the hydrogen industry. In a bid to overcome these obstacles, KIMM has introduced initiatives to support domestic shipbuilders, including testing the capacity of ultra-low temperature materials, assessing compatibility with the hydrogen environment for materials and parts, and conducting testing and durability assessments in a range of extreme environments.

This support, built on the foundation of the newly established infrastructure, encompasses testing, evaluation, analysis, and technical assistance at relatively low costs.

Mijnbouwmagnaat: Europa moet net als VS miljarden investeren in groene waterstof
Door GERT VAN HARSKAMP

Updated Gisteren, 15:19
Gisteren, 11:35
in FINANCIEEL

Rendement
