Why Do (Dutch) Banks Prefer Ripple Over Bitcoin?

Last presentation for today. What is going on in the market from the business side of cryptocurrencies? Vrolijk is a payment consultant for RBS, ING, Van Lanschot, Bank of Dutch Municipalities and Staalbankiers since 2000.

Cryptocurrencies are by far the most interesting development in the payments industry. As early as 2012–2013, Vrolijk recognized that major banks had much more interest in Ripple than Bitcoin. Especially events in 2014 primed banks’ interest.

While Bitcoin leaves its forex part up to the market, Ripple offers a built-in currency exchange for all fiat, as well as anything of value (via IOUs). Ripple’s important elements include: gateways, market makers and the consensus ledger.

He was speaking about innovation and collaboration and structure of partnerships they try to cultivate through not only VC but maybe through equity agreements once confidence is established.

At the end of his reverse pitch a gentlemen asked about the Ripple logo that was on one of his slides, to which he responded, a bit pithily: "We are experimenting with Ripple" and the moderator said, "maybe top-secret project and better for a private conversation"

Framing the blockchain technology underlying bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as a potential way to advance payment services, Gunther said:

"By using bitcoin technology, banks might be able to update customer accounts within seconds. The question now is whether this would indeed be possible, and if so, at what risks. Apart from the functionality, our focus will always be on security as well.”

Combining bank security with bitcoin

ABN Amro's experiments with bitcoin have been public knowledge for a couple of months, having been revealed in the Dutch technology news source AutomatiseringGids.

Menno van Leeuwen, the team leader at the bank's Innovation Centre, was quoted as saying:

“Banks are faced with competitors from outside of the traditional financial sector, who come up with new solutions. If we ignore these developments, that might lead to surprises, which is undesirable ... As banks, we have a lot experience in the field of providing customers with security, and we're currently testing the combination with bitcoin.”

Rabobank official Wiebe Draijer also acknowledged his bank's interest in blockchain technology on the RTL show.

“There's a lot of developments happening with [blockchain] technology," he said. "It's interesting to see what kind of feature this holds, and whether it will influence the banking system.”

RTL confirmed that Rabobank is testing blockchain technology, including bitcoin, although a spokesperson told CoinDesk that the bank is not interested in using bitcoin directly – either its currency or network – but is interested in researching how the technology works.

Additionally, at SWIFT's InnoTRIBE conference (see a video), a Rabobank official stated that the institution is also experimenting with the Ripple payments network.
Limited central bank approval

It is still unclear exactly what kind of experiments the banks are conducting at this point, and to what extent they are considering the integration of bitcoin.

There is also the issue of how far such experiments would be allowed to progress by the country's financial authorities.

The Dutch central bank (DNB) warned the nation's financial institutions of the risks involved with dealing in bitcoin last June, and stated that it does not consider bitcoin a viable alternative to fiat currency.

In his recent interaction with CoinDesk.com, Federal Reserve Bank’s Vice President and Research Director David Andolfatto acknowledged Ripple network for utilizing Bitcoin’s original ledger at its best.
(...)
His statement, which was focused on how Bitcoin technology could bring genuine benefits to US central bank’s real-time settlement system, suddenly found Ripple as a reference to the true potential of Bitcoin’s public ledger system. According to Andolfatto, the Federal System could utilize a distributed ledger system to keep all the books simultaneously in their member banks. So in case of a system breakdown, the records could be recovered from the ledger.

“You could actually see which bank is sending money to which bank on this ‘Fedcoin blockchain,’ so if the Fed was to make an emergency loan to one of these entities you’d be able to observe who is the recipient of the loan and how much,” stated Andolfatto by drawing an imaginative scenario to elaborate his point.

He couldn’t be wrong as Ripple does exactly the same thing which he currently visions for Federal Banking Systems. Ripple software offers its users a home-grown wallet to trade Bitcoins for its private currency XRP, as well as fiats like US Dollar and Euro, in a distributed order book. It overall makes the process of withdrawing and depositing money distributable, as funds could be used to buy/sell Bitcoins from any of the listed order books, not just one.

“This [Andolfatto’s reference] seems to confirm Ripple is a winner in the inter-banking gateway business. Good for Ripple Labs (and XRP price),” said a Ripple enthusiast.

Andolfatto meanwhile also indicated that Fed economists are not thinking about implementing such a technology for now, citing their prior engagements as the biggest reason. “The thing to keep in mind is that there’s a lot on the minds of fed economists these days,” he added.

Beste ZwarteRidder,

Ripple is poised to be the next big thing during the crypto revolution

What’s interesting about this, though, is the fact that a sudden influx of cash into the ripple market could spike prices much higher than it might otherwise (if the full circulation of ripple were already in the wild). For example, CoinMarketCap.com estimates ripple’s market cap at $2 billion. If indeed ripple’s market cap hit $2 billion and there were only 7.4 billion ripple on the market, we’d be looking at ripple prices around $0.27.

If ripple’s market cap surged to $10 billion (a number bitcoin hit back in December), we’d be looking at ripple prices of $1.35. A market cap around $15 billion would push ripple up to $2. Not bad!

“If bitcoin itself is not a future, bitcoin technology definitely is,” Jacob Boersma

I’ve looked at litecoin, but it is not so different form bitcoin. There are actually two real alternative networks which I see being strong. First one is Ethereum, which is a good tool to create smart contracts. Another one is Ripple. Due to the way it is set up it’s more attractive to traditional banks than bitcoin is in a way. Ripple is becoming more popular in the banking world. Ethereum will become really popular as well if it would manage to create applications for these smart contracts.

En....

It appears collaboration between Ripple Labs and Ethereum could be on the horizon but it will be related to the Codius Smart Contracts platform rather than Ripple itself.

Today, the Federal Reserve released Strategies for Improving the U.S. Payment System. This paper communicates the Federal Reserve’s desired outcomes for the U.S. payment system, outlines its strategies to achieve these outcomes and solicits broad stakeholder engagement and participation to implement these strategies.

To begin the next phase of industry engagement on payment system improvement, Federal Reserve Board Governor Jerome H. Powell and Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City President Esther George will host a webcast, accessible via www.ustream.tv/federalreserve, at 1:00 p.m. EST on January 29. They will share views on the Federal Reserve’s vision for the future U.S. payment system and plans for collaborating with stakeholders to achieve shared goals. Following their remarks, these Federal Reserve leaders will answer questions submitted by the general public. Click here to submit your question.

Take advantage of this unique opportunity to discuss payments improvement with the Federal Reserve’s top leaders!

The second option (page 40 = Ripple) would use distributed architecture for messaging between financial institutions over public IP networks, with a central authority establishing common protocols for messaging standards, communication, security and logging transactions.

About the founder

For me it all started with Bitcoin. While studying architecture and working as a freelance web designer and developer, Nejc Kodric contacted me one day and asked me to design him a website. He explained what Bitcoin is and how he believes it will change the world. I thought he was nuts. But after a while it became clear that we could make the world a better place. Bitcoin is amazing but it has limitations when it comes to everyday use. That’s where Ripple steps in.

Working for Bitstamp from the very beginning made me very fortunate to be one of the first people to get to know Ripple.

It was hard to grasp on everything it can do. But after using it for a while I realized that the founders of this protocol are up to something. Money right now is boring. There is no Twitter, Instagram or Facebook for money. You can’t have cool apps to visualize your income or spending. The reason for that is simply because we don’t have a protocol through which these apps could communicate with each other. We don’t have an API for money.

Ripple is that protocol, it is that API which we can use right now.

Knowing all that I decided that the only way to make everybody see the future is to bring the future to them. That’s how the idea of a new gateway was born. Me and my colleagues worked very hard for the last year to create something truly useful.

We hope you’ll love it as much as we do!

Enej Pungercar, CEO and founder of GateHub Ltd.
