'Amerikaanse toezichthouder wil eisen coronavaccin aanscherpen'

Alice Stollmeyer,Executive Director @DefendDemocracy :

U.S. ambassador to Netherlands, Pete Hoekstra is accused of interfering in national politics by hosting Dutch farright (!) fundraiser.

He may have violated the Vienna Convention on diplomacy.

"This is interference in our elections."

This is not the first time Hoekstra has been associated with the far-right party. In May, he was interviewed by Baudet for the party's video channel and he was also a guest speaker at the party's conference last November.

Lincoln Project places anti-Trump ads in military newspapers

The anti-Trump GOP group Lincoln Project launched a new ad campaign Tuesday in Stars & Stripes and the Military Times network.

The group known for its targeted ads against President Trump said its latest campaign in military newspapers was created after The Atlantic reported Trump referred "to military service members and veterans as 'losers' and 'suckers,'" The Lincoln Project said in a statement.

A rotation of five military and national security-themed ads aired last week and will run through mid-October.

"It's a complete disgrace that a Commander-in-Chief who dodged serving in Vietnam and denigrated POW's publicly has the audacity to disrespect the millions of brave men and women who volunteered for military service," said Fred Wellman, The Lincoln Project's senior adviser for veterans affairs.

The Lincoln Project said it is delivering its message through its latest campaign to the "military community so that every service member, veteran, and their families know the truth about Donald Trump's betrayal of America's troops."

‘Tsunami’ of hotel closures is coming, experts warn

Located on one of the world’s most expensive strips of commercial real estate, the upscale Luxe Rodeo Drive hotel has closed, a casualty of a pandemic that is likely to put more hotels out of business.

The 86-room hotel, which for 27 years shared a city block with such high-end outlets as Cartier and Harry Winston, notified its workers last week that it would permanently cease operations because of the financial effects of the COVID-19 crisis.

Wall Street fears meltdown over election and Supreme Court

Dion Rabouin.

The death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and President Trump's vow to name her replacement to the Supreme Court before November's election are amplifying Wall Street's worries about major volatility and market losses ahead of and even after the election.

The big picture: The 2020 election is the most expensive event risk on record, per Bloomberg — with insurance bets on implied volatility six times their normal level, according to JPMorgan analysts. And it could take days or even weeks to count the record number of mail-in ballots and declare a winner.

What we're hearing: "Not getting the election results in a timely manner will be destabilizing," Lou Brien, rates strategist at DRW Trading, tells Axios. "Especially in light of how divided the country appears to be now."
"I think stock market moves will be violent intraday and the prevailing trend will likely be down, maybe sharply so."

The Supreme Court nomination will compound the partisanship and division in the event of a contested election, analysts at TD Securities say in a recent not to clients.
That not only will increase volatility but also "reduces the likelihood of Congress passing a phase 4 stimulus" package, Priya Misra, TD's head of global rates strategy, tells Axios.
It also means "we should be putting in a greater probability of a Blue Wave," wherein Democrats control the presidency and both chambers of Congress, she adds.

Flashback: The delay in deciding the winner of the 2000 presidential election caused great uncertainty and market volatility, with the S&P 500 falling 10% in the month following the election.

Watch this space: "Where we could get in a scenario that’s quite challenging is where we don’t actually know the makeup of Congress, primarily the Senate, or even worse the president," says Stephen Dover, head of equities for Franklin Templeton.
"It would be very hard to pass stimulus until that’s cleared up."

Be smart: Whether or not we get that stimulus is paramount, says Bill Callahan, an investment strategist at Schroders, as 30 million Americans remain on unemployment insurance and U.S. companies have filed for bankruptcy at the fastest pace since 2010.
"People are willing to say as long as this package is coming in the next three to four months we’re going to be OK."
"But if you say 'We’re going to let everyone fend for themselves for the next 24 months,' that’s not going to work out."

Between the lines: All eyes will be on the presidential race, but the real battle will be over the Senate, Dover tells Axios.
"Why is that important? Because the tilt of the Senate, especially if Biden wins, will allow him to make much bigger changes in policy than we’ve seen in the past."

The state of play: A repeal of Trump's 2017 Tax Cut and Jobs Act could have significant stock market implications immediately, and with a Democratic Congress Biden is expected to increase spending on health care, new jobs programs and renewable energy.

The last word: Many analysts remain bullish on the market's outlook after the election is settled — whenever that is.
"Any selloff that is caused mainly by some sort of an election or a political outcome often represents a great buying opportunity," Callahan says.
"Generally after elections, your worst fears or greatest aspirations don’t happen."

Cindy McCain, the widow of Senator John McCain of Arizona, formally endorsed Joseph R. Biden Jr. for president on Tuesday, praising the “character and integrity” of her late husband’s longtime friend and colleague while voicing her unease with President Trump.

Ms. McCain, who spoke in a video at the Democratic convention last month, said in a telephone interview that she had been uncertain about how public a role she would play in this year’s campaign. But after reading reports this month that described Mr. Trump denigrating members of the military, she said, she became “more and more frustrated” with the president.

“The most important thing that moved me a great deal was talking about troops’ being ‘losers,’” Ms. McCain said, referring to an article in The Atlantic. “You know we have children in the military, as did the Bidens.”

She added, “I want my president to have my back, and I don’t believe that’s the case right now.”

I hardly know Cindy McCain other than having put her on a Committee at her husband’s request. Joe Biden was John McCain’s lapdog. So many BAD decisions on Endless Wars & the V.A., which I brought from a horror show to HIGH APPROVAL. Never a fan of John. Cindy can have Sleepy Joe!

“When news broke on Friday that Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg had died, Trump was just 5 minutes into a MN campaign rally, and aides opted not to pass word to him onstage. If he announced the death of the liberal justice, they feared the crowd would cheer.”

But cheers that would have looked unseemly one night were welcomed in another form a night later as the next rally crowd chanted, “Fill that seat!” To a president lagging in the polls, the chance to fill a Supreme Court vacancy has become a political lifeline, a chance to mobilize supporters and talk about something, anything, other than the coronavirus that has killed 200,000 Americans.

Whether it will ultimately change the outcome of the campaign is up for debate given that Democratic voters may be equally energized. But for Mr. Trump, nothing else has been working and so he has propelled himself, his Republican allies and the country into a breakneck race to confirm a successor to Justice Ginsburg before the Nov. 3 election, bulldozing past the precedent his own party set four years ago in a gamble that the political payoff will outweigh any political cost.

www.nytimes.com/2020/09/22/us/politic...

“You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right?” Clinton said. “The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic—you name it. And unfortunately there are people like that. And he has lifted them up.”

She said the other half of Trump’s supporters “feel that the government has let them down” and are “desperate for change.”

“Those are people we have to understand and empathize with as well,” she said.

Now, some of those folks — they are irredeemable, but thankfully they are not America. But the other basket — and I know this because I see friends from all over America here — I see friends from Florida and Georgia and South Carolina and Texas — as well as, you know, New York and California — but that other basket of people are people who feel that the government has let them down, the economy has let them down, nobody cares about them, nobody worries about what happens to their lives and their futures, and they’re just desperate for change. It doesn’t really even matter where it comes from. They don’t buy everything he says, but he seems to hold out some hope that their lives will be different. They won’t wake up and see their jobs disappear, lose a kid to heroine, feel like they’re in a dead-end. Those are people we have to understand and empathize with as well.

A pair of Senate Republican committee chairmen released a report Wednesday arguing that Hunter Biden’s board position with a Ukrainian energy company was “awkward,” “problematic” and interfered with “efficient execution of policy” for the Obama administration, but offered few specific examples that it impacted Vice President Joe Biden’s actions and failed to demonstrate that it changed the administration’s policy toward Ukraine.

Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) and Senate Finance Committee Chairman Charles E. Grassley (R-Iowa) co-authored the report, which comes just weeks before the Nov. 3 election between President Trump and Joe Biden.

The GOP report concludes that “Hunter Biden’s position on Burisma’s board was problematic and did interfere in the efficient execution of policy with respect to Ukraine,” while charging that he and other Biden relatives “cashed in on Joe Biden’s vice presidency.”

But at the same time, the report states that “the extent to which Hunter Biden’s role on Burisma’s board affected U.S. policy toward Ukraine is not clear.”

meer:

The investigation, which was launched last year, has been mired in controversy since the start, as Democrats accused Johnson and Grassley of running the probe to try to counter the House’s impeachment of Trump, who pressured Ukrainian officials to investigate the Bidens.

Johnson and Grassley have defended the investigation as a legitimate probe into potential abuses of access to power. But the standoff took a darker turn this summer, when Democrats accused Johnson of laundering Russian disinformation through his probe — a charge Johnson and Grassley have vehemently rejected.

The accusation stems in part from public statements made by Andrii Derkach, a Ukrainian lawmaker who previously belonged to a pro-Russian party, claiming to have sent documents to Johnson and Grassley to aid in their probe. Johnson and Grassley have stated repeatedly that they have had no contact with Derkach, who was sanctioned by the Treasury Department earlier this month as an “active Russian agent.”

The release of the report comes less than a week before Trump faces Joe Biden in the first of three presidential debates, a forum in which Trump is expected to invoke allegations against his rival’s son.
