De Russen doen het op de laffe wijze :

Het beschieten van dorpen en steden met weerloze burgers als slachtoffer

Rusland concentreert zich op Oost Oekraine, het veroveren van de Donbas regio.

Nu is het Russische leger al wekenlang ( sinds 3 juli ) de plaatsen op de lijn Slovyansk--Kramatorsk-Bakhmut plat te bombarderen van ca 20 km afstand met artillerie
Wanneer deze lijn veroverd is zijn de Oekrainse troepen ten Oosten van deze lijn volledig omsingeld

War And Water: Shortages, Attacks Augment Health Risks On Ukraine's Front Lines

KYIV -- When Russia launched its massive invasion of Ukraine on February 24, the residents of Myrnohrad knew what they needed to do -- start digging.

The small city, which sits within artillery range of Russian forces in eastern Ukraine, endured six months without water in 2014, after the war between the government and Kremlin-backed forces erupted in the region known as the Donbas.

Residents then spent a few winter weeks shivering after fighting in early 2015 damaged water systems that fed into boilers, according to Denys Tomaz, head of the city department of investment and innovation. Since then, the city has been making contingency plans, including working to turn groundwater seeping through defunct coal mines into a source of potable water.

"We understood that it could happen again," Tomaz said by phone from Myrnohrad. The government has been drilling wells across the city and even helping residents dig their own.

While Myrnohrad has so far avoided significant damage, many other frontline cities are not so lucky.

Attacks on water infrastructure and the movement of residents fleeing their homes have left as many as 13 million people across Ukraine needing assistance with water, sanitation, and hygiene, according to a July UN report. Areas without safe access to water could face outbreaks of cholera, hepatitis, scabies, and other potentially deadly diseases, the UN said.

Children are particularly vulnerable. Polluted water and unsanitary living conditions kill children more than 20 times more frequently than violence in countries experiencing an extended conflict, according to a 2019 UNICEF report.

Ukraine's problems with water have been most acute in Russian-controlled Mariupol, on the Azov Sea coast in the Donbas, and Mykolayiv, which lies further west and remains in Ukrainian hands.

Russia's attack on Mariupol, formerly a city of 430,000 people, began on the first day of the invasion. By March 2, the assault had destroyed the main canal for drinking water and the auxiliary water supply. Over three months of grinding siege conditions, all 22 of the city's pumps were destroyed, according to the city government.

Residents were forced to drink rainwater and smash heating systems to extract the water to wash their hands, according to Human Rights Watch.

Russia appears to have done little to restore access to safe water following its occupation of the city in mid-May, putting the remaining 100,000 residents at risk of waterborne illnesses. As of early July, just 5 percent of homes were connected to water sources, according to a social-media channel run by Petro Andryushchenko, an adviser to the mayor of Mariupol who is currently outside the city.

For those who didn't know Dzhankoy is a main railway junction in Crimea to bring the Russian armed forces and ammo into Ukraine

Could Russia's Vladimir Putin face a Nuremberg-style tribunal over the Ukraine war?

London — As prosecutors gather evidence of thousands of war crimes allegedly committed by Russian troops in Ukraine, a number of prominent figures have joined the Ukrainian government to call for a new Nuremberg-style tribunal to hold Russia's leaders to account for one specific crime they say is falling through the cracks: the crime of aggression.

Ukraine is working with various international bodies to prosecute war crimes, and it's already charging people within its own criminal justice system. But prosecution for the crime of aggression, advocates for a special tribunal say, may be the best way to see Russian President Vladimir Putin himself face justice for the war.

"When bombs fall on your cities, when soldiers rape women in the occupied cities… it's difficult, of course, to speak about the efficiency of international law," Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dymtro Kuleba said when the call for a tribunal was first announced in March. "But this is the only tool of civilization that is available to us to make sure that, in the end, eventually, all those who made this war possible will be brought to justice."

Since 1945, there have been four types of defined international crime: war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, and the crime of aggression. The last, articulated under the International Criminal Court's founding Rome Statute, is defined as "waging a manifestly illegal war," professor and international law expert Philippe Sands told CBS News.

Aggression "is a leadership crime," Sands explained. "It is only committed by those who have the power, the capacity to decide to wage or continue a manifestly illegal war. What that means in the context of Ukraine; you're talking about Mr. Putin, Mr. Lavrov [Russian Foreign Minister], the Minister of Defense, the top military officials, the top intelligence people."

But prosecuting Russia for the crime of aggression over the war in Ukraine is no straightforward task under the current international justice system.

In the specific case of Russia's invasion of Ukraine — barring an extremely unlikely referral from the United Nations Security Council, where Russia has veto power — the International Criminal Court does not have jurisdiction over aggression.

"There is a gap in the international legal order," Sands said. "The crime exists in international law, but there's no way to enforce it."

With the other war crimes or crimes against humanity allegedly committed by Russian troops in Ukraine, it may be difficult or even impossible to establish a direct connection to Russia's leaders.

"I think it's possible that you can find evidence that links Putin directly to war crimes, crimes against humanity, but there's absolutely no doubt that Putin is guilty of this initial crime — what the Nuremberg trial authors called the 'initial and fundamental and supreme crime' — the crime of actually planning an aggression against a sovereign state," former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who's backing the establishment of a tribunal for Ukraine, told CBS News.

Corruption in the Russian Armed Forces

Corruption is endemic in Russia and is pervasive within its defence industrial sector and armed forces. Evidence from Ukraine suggests that it is costing Russian lives.

Corruption in the Russian armed forces, and society in general, has been a long-acknowledged truism. The Russian public sector has consistently ranked near the bottom of Transparency.org’s Corruption Perceptions Index, placing 136 out of 180 countries in 2021. Corruption has been perceived as a particular problem within Russia’s military and is seen in some regards as a part of military life. Tor Bukkvoll wrote in a 2005 study of corruption in the Russian armed forces that it included three elements. The first was individual corruption, seen as an essential means of providing a minimal standard of living. The second was institutional corruption, taken to mean the ‘web of informal rules, constraints and habits’ that governed the lives of Russian officers. Finally, there was the political level, which included the relations between the Russian government, the military, and institutions established to police corruption.

Notable cases of Russian corruption gained public attention throughout the 1990s, including the Russian general dismissed for selling UN fuel while deployed to Kosovo, and reports of Russian soldiers deployed to Chechnya selling their weapons to Chechen fighters. The causes then were complaints about conditions: many Russian soldiers lived in dire circumstances with a poor income, and in the case of Chechnya were committed to an uncoordinated fight against a motivated and well-armed opponent. The problem appears to have grown in scope, leading Russia’s chief military prosecutor Sergei Fridinsky to claim in 2011 that corruption through the abuse of state defence orders had taken on ‘cosmic’ proportions. The opening phases of the war in Ukraine show that this malaise has grown and has cost Russian soldiers their health – and in some cases their lives.
