De geestelijken van de Amsterdamse parochie van de Russisch-Orthodoxe Kerk stappen over naar het patriarchaat van Constantinopel, een andere stroming binnen de oosters-orthodoxe kerken. Dat hebben de vier priesters en de diaken besloten nadat ze onder druk waren gezet door de Russisch-orthodoxe aartsbisschop in Nederland, Elisey. Ze hadden laten weten dat ze niet achter het standpunt van de kerk staan, die de Russische inval in Oekraïne steunt.

Elisey kwam afgelopen zondag vanuit zijn standplaats Den Haag onaangekondigd naar de viering in de Heilige Nikolaas van Myra-kerk in Amsterdam, meldt het Nederlands Dagblad. Daar drong hij erop aan dat in de liturgie de naam werd genoemd van patriarch Kirill van Moskou, de geestelijk leider van de Russisch-Orthodoxe Kerk.

Bedreiging en bekladding

Ook liet hij weten dat het Russische ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken de kerk "met grote interesse" volgt. De priesters zagen dat als een uitdrukkelijke bedreiging, zegt een bron binnen de parochie tegen de krant. Na zondag nam de druk nog verder toe. Dinsdag werd de kerk in Amsterdam beklad met de letter Z, het omstreden Russische symbool voor de oorlog in Oekraïne.
