Russia-Ukraine War: Russian Oil Tankers Stranded In The Sea, Paying Price For The War

Since the Russian invasion, more than 20 oil tankers have left Russian ports carrying almost 8.5 million barrels of oil. With sanctions from many countries, these ships are just “drifting” in the sea. Having listed their status as “For orders”, “drifting” or listed “zzz” as their destination, the ships have nowhere to go.

A Look at Ukraine’s Neptune Antiship Cruise Missile

Ukrainian authorities on Thursday said the country’s military deployed its indigenous antiship missile, dubbed Neptune, in an attack on the flagship of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, the Moskva cruiser.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said the Moskva was abandoned by its crew after its ammunition blew up. It didn’t say what caused the fire and there was no independent confirmation of the type of weapons used.

If confirmed, the attack would be Ukraine’s most significant naval strike of the war and the first known use of the Neptune missile system, a medium-range cruise missile designed for use primarily against warships.

Ukraine doesn’t have significant missile capabilities but has been developing them. National-security authorities had earmarked billions of dollars for missile development over the coming decade, yet no such missiles have been produced in any real quantities.

The Neptune is an update of the Soviet-era KH-35 missile, which was fired from ships and planes, and was modified to strike from truck-mounted launchers at targets on both land and water. Its range is estimated to be 200 miles and its main prey would be cruisers such as the Moskva, along with destroyers and other warships.

When the war broke out in late February, Kyiv was carrying out final tests of the Neptune. Ukrainian defense officials had previously announced a timeline culminating in an April deployment. Privately, Ukrainian officials and defense analysts doubted the reality of that schedule, saying that the Neptune, despite impressive test videos, was far from being ready.

"If you had some available, you might be tempted to try to use them," said Douglas Barrie, a defense fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, a London think tank. “Even if unsuccessful, it would force the Russian navy to honor the threat."

Julia Davis, Columnist @TheDailyBeast, Russian Media Analyst,

I've been telling you that the Russian state media is being directed by their handlers to move on from Putin's absurd claim of invading Ukraine to fight the "Nazis" to an even more absurd claim of fighting "Satanists," in Ukraine and the West.

Here is another example.

Here, they are attempting to explain what happened in #Kramatorsk by blaming it on Ukraine, the U.S., the UK, the EU and their joint "satanic plans" for "hybrid WWIII" against poor innocent Russia.

along with losing his Italian villas to sanctions, state TV host Vladimir Solovyov seems to have lost his mind. This messaging—portraying Ukrainians as "satanic Nazis" and claiming Zelensky is not a Jew—is commonplace on Kremlin-controlled state TV.

World’s largest shipping company has left Russia. The move represents a full departure from the sanctions-hit country.

Maersk has stopped accepting new bookings on all of its services to and from Russia and will sell all of its assets in Russia following its annual meeting of shareholders

As it stands, every third container in Russia belongs to Maersk. According to Alphaliner, Maersk is one of four operators (Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM and COSCO) who control 58% of Russia’s shipping market.

Other leaders in the shipping sector have also decided to leave Russia – this includes Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd, Ocean Network Express (ONE) and Yang Ming. A number of other operators using smaller terminals have pulled out too.

“The phase-out of our activity has already begun, and, unfortunately, at the moment we do not have clarity on the prospects for the resumption of Maersk activities in Russia,” reads a letter sent by the operator to its clients.

Russia says Moskva 'still afloat' but Ukraine military claims warship started sinking when hit

Russia’s defence ministry has said the fire on board the warship Moskva, the flagship of Russia’s Black Sea fleet, is “under control”.

The ship was reportedly struck by two Ukrainian missiles in the Black Sea late on Wednesday night. It was famously defied by Ukrainian troops on Snake Island at the start of the war.

In a statement, the Russian defence ministry said:

The fire on the cruiser Moskva is under control. There are no flames visible. Ammunition supplies are no longer exploding.

The cruiser Moskva is still afloat. The main missile armoury has not been damaged.

The crew of the cruiser were evacuated to Black Sea Fleet vessels nearby. Measures are being taken to tow the cruiser into port.

The causes of the fire are currently being established.

The ministry had earlier said that the ship had been “seriously damaged as a result of the detonation of ammunition that occurred as a result of a fire”.

However, Ukraine’s southern military command said the Moska had started to sink after it was hit by a Neptune missile.

In a Facebook post, the southern military command said the missile cruiser had received “significant damage” and a fire ignited on board after the strike.

The statement continued:

Other units of the ship’s group tried to help, but a storm and a powerful explosion of ammunition overturned the cruiser and it began to sink.

Germany has seized the world’s largest superyacht after “extensive investigations” determined that it is owned by the sister of the sanctioned the Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov.

The German federal police said on Thursday it had seized the $600m (£458m) Dilbar after weeks of painstaking financial investigative work exposed the yacht’s true ownership despite a complex web of “offshore concealment”.

The vessel is flagged in the Cayman Islands and registered to a holding company in Malta – both tax havens favoured by the global ultra-rich to park their wealth.

German authorities said they had determined the yacht was ultimately owned by Usmanov’s sister Gulbakhor Ismailova.

Usmanov, a telecoms magnate who owns the £48m mansion Beechwood House in Highgate, London and the 16th-century Sutton Place estate in Surrey, was sanctioned by the UK last month. The billionaire, who has had significant interests in the English football clubs Arsenal and Everton, had already been sanctioned by the EU and the US.

Ismailova and another of Usmanov’s sisters, Saodat Narzieva, have also been subjected to UK and EU sanctions. The UK government said Usmanov “indirectly transferred assets to Ismailova, including leaving his sister as the only beneficial owner of the yacht Dilbar”.

US assesses Russian warship still battling fire, but cannot confirm cause, defense official says

From CNN's Michael Conte

The United States assesses that the Russian cruiser Moskva is still battling a fire onboard but still cannot confirm what caused the damage, according to a senior US defense official.

The official also said that the ship is moving east, and the US assumes it will be heading to the port of Sevastopol for repairs.

The US has seen that other Russian ships in the northern Black Sea near the Moskva have all subsequently moved further south, according to the official.

Ukraine claimed to have hit Moskva with a missile, while Russia said the cause of the fire is still “being established” and that there is no “open fire” on the ship.

“We cannot confirm what caused the damage to the cruiser Moskva. We do believe that she has experienced significant damage. Our assessment is that she still appears to be battling a fire onboard. But we do not know the extent of the damage. We don’t know anything about casualties to her crew. And we cannot definitely say at this point what caused that damage,” the US official said.

“We hold the ship moving to the east. Our assumption is that she’ll be heading to Sevastopol for repairs. But that’s really all we can say. The only other maritime activity worth noting is that we did note that other Black Sea ships that were operating in the vicinity of her or in the northern Black Sea have all moved further south, in the wake of the damage that the Moskva experienced. So they’ve all, all of the northern Black Sea ships have now moved out, away from the northern areas where they were operating in,” the official added.

Pentagon press secretary John Kirby echoed similar comments in an interview with CNN earlier Thursday, saying that “there was an explosion” on the Russian cruiser, but that the United States cannot assess at this point if the ship was hit by a missile.
