BultiesBrothers

Rest c/p bijna allemaal glad.

Plan to shift inland waterways, army trucks to methanol in the works
SECTIONSPlan to shift inland waterways, army trucks to methanol in the worksBy Yogima Seth Sharma, ET BureauLast Updated: Jan 18, 2022, 06:10 AM IST
Synopsis
Methanol is a low-carbon, hydrogen carrier fuel produced from high ash coal, agricultural residue, CO2 from thermal power plants and natural gas. It is cheaper than petrol and diesel and also ethanol.

The government is working on a plan to use methanol as fuel for inland waterway transportation and in army trucks as part of a strategy to cut dependence on imported fuel, a top official told ET.

It has initiated talks with Pune-based Deccan Water Treatment Pvt. Ltd. to undertake the conversion of diesel engines so that they can run on methanol, according to the official, as the government enhances focus on green fuels. Deccan Water Treatment will do this with the help of its Swedish joint venture partner.

Methanol is a low-carbon, hydrogen carrier fuel produced from high ash coal, agricultural residue, CO2 from thermal power plants and natural gas. It is cheaper than petrol and diesel and also ethanol.

Apart from cutting India's oil NSE 0.38 % import bill, the use of methanol is also seen as a way of meeting India's commitment at the Paris Climate Conference.

"NITI Aayog is facilitating conversion of inland waterways at Haldia, Varanasi and Allahabad under this project," the official said.

The project will be implemented through Deccan ScandiNAOS India, a 70:30 joint venture between Deccan Water Treatment and ScandiNAOS, with the latter being the technology partner.

Niti Aayog has drawn a plan to replace 20% of crude imports with methanol, which will help bring down pollution in the country by more than 40%. Under the plan, 500 barges will be converted to run on 100% methanol, replacing heavy oil or bunker oil, resulting in reduction in pollutants being released into rivers and seas.

This could be followed by conversion of army trucks to run on methanol and even diesel railway engines, as India scales up domestic production of methanol.

"Deccan ScandiNAOS India aims to drive the 'methanol economy' programme in India, in line with the government's initiative to promote and adopt alternative fuels in the country, by providing design and supply methanol fuel solutions for internal combustion engines as well as conversion for existing conventional fuel engines to run on methanol," Animesh Sarkar, chairman of the JV company said.

It is estimated that the cost of gasoline including taxes is ?94.49 per litre. The cost of ethanol including taxes on an energy equivalent basis with gasoline is ?69.9, while the cost of methanol on an energy equivalent basis with gasoline is ?37.6, making methanol more economical compared with ethanol and petrol.

Production of methanol from coal is the most economically viable option for India, with the other sources being natural gas, naphtha, biomass, etc.

SUSTAINABLE ENERGY
‘Green’ fuels will cost the consumer — but we need to think long term, Maersk CEO says
PUBLISHED THU, JAN 13 202210:28 AM EST

KEY POINTS
According to the International Energy Agency, international shipping was responsible for approximately 2% of “global energy-related CO2 emissions in 2020.”
With concerns about sustainability mounting, the sector will need to find new ways of reducing the environmental footprint of its operations.

The CEO of shipping giant Moller-Maersk admitted to CNBC Thursday that shifting to “green” fuels would come at a cost, but emphasized the importance of focusing on the bigger picture rather than short-term pain.

Soren Skou’s comments come a day after his company said it wanted the entire business to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in the year 2040, 10 years ahead of its previous goal.

“When we embark on this carbon neutrality journey, we are going to use … green fuels,” Skou, who was speaking to CNBC’s “Squawk Box Europe,” said. As a starting point, these fuels were “probably two to three times … much more expensive,” Skou said.

“But we’re looking at this over a 20 year horizon and therefore, we think that the inflationary impact will be very modest when it comes out to the consumer.”

“As an example, we are spending around $400 per container on fuels today,” Skou said. “If it triples we need to spend another $800 per container.”

“That’s of course a lot, but … inside the container you have 8,000 pairs of sneakers, for instance, so it’s 10 cents per pair of sneakers. So that’s why I think … for the consumer, it will be manageable.”

According to the International Energy Agency, international shipping — a crucial cog in the world’s economy — was responsible for approximately 2% of “global energy-related CO2 emissions in 2020.”

With concerns about sustainability mounting and major economies and businesses around the world looking to cut emissions and meet net-zero targets, the sector will need to find new ways of reducing the environmental footprint of its operations.

Back in August, Maersk said it was ordering a number of large, ocean-going vessels able to run on what it called “carbon neutral methanol.” The firm said the vessels would be built by South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries and have the capacity to carry around 16,000 containers.

Maersk said the ships would have a dual fuel engine set up, a feature which increases costs.

“Additional capital expenditure … for the dual fuel capability, which enables operation on methanol as well as conventional low Sulphur fuel, will be in the range of 10-15% of the total price,” it said.

Shipping is not unique in attempting to find more sustainable ways of powering operations. In aviation, for example, a lot of discussions have taken place about the potential of sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF.

Last October the CEO of Ryanair, Michael O’Leary, acknowledged the need for ambitious sustainable aviation fuel targets but also expressed concerns about how food prices could be affected.

During a discussion at CNBC’s “Sustainable Future Forum,” O’Leary said his firm was investing “a lot of money” with Trinity College Dublin on research into SAF.

In April 2021, the two organizations launched a sustainable aviation research center backed by a 1.5 million euro ($1.72 million) donation from the airline. As well as focusing on SAF, the center will look at noise mapping and zero-carbon propulsion systems for aircraft.

Ryanair has itself set a target of powering 12.5% of its flights with SAF by the year 2030. But speaking to CNBC’s Steve Sedgwick, O’Leary said he thought it was “a very ambitious target — I’m not sure we’ll get there.”

He went on to articulate his feelings about the wider effects of increasing SAF usage. “I do worry over the longer term, though, on sustainable aviation fuels … what’s that going to do to food prices going forward?”

“I think we’re going to reach a point in the next 10 or 20 years where there will be challenges posed not just for the airline industry, but for industry in general, around sustainable aviation fuels where it may have an upward impact on food prices.”

Potash fertilizer prices are 116% more expensive than one year ago. (DTN chart)
OMAHA (DTN) -- Retail fertilizer prices continue to be mostly higher the second week of January 2022, according to retailers surveyed by DTN. However, for the first time in more than 13 months, a fertilizer was actually lower than a month ago.

None of the eight major fertilizers were up a considerable amount, another new trend. DTN designates a significant move as anything 5% or more.

Seven of the eight major fertilizers were slightly higher. DAP had an average price of $863 per ton, potash $807/ton, urea $913/ton (all-time high), 10-34-0 $796/ton, anhydrous $1,430/ton (all-time high), UAN28 $584/ton (all-time high) and UAN32 $679/ton (all-time high).

One fertilizer was actually lower compared to a month ago; this is the first time this has happened since the first week of December 2020. MAP was down just slightly and had an average price of $932/ton.

On a price per pound of nitrogen basis, the average urea price was at $0.99/lb.N, anhydrous $0.87/lb.N, UAN28 $1.04/lb.N and UAN32 $1.06/lb.N.

The Federal Reserve Board is expecting the income of U.S. farmers to drop in 2022, according to Dow Jones.

Expectations are for income to be lower in 2022 than in 2021, as recent growth in input prices outpaced growth in agricultural commodity prices. Farmers expect this trend to continue, according to the Federal Reserve in a report published last week.

Higher costs for inputs like fertilizer, as well as fuel and transportation, are pressuring farmers' budgets globally, even as grain futures remain at high levels not seen in several years.

Retail fertilizer prices compared to a year ago show all fertilizers have increased significantly, with several fertilizers having well over 100% price increases.

MAP is now 69% more expensive, 10-34-0 is 70% higher, DAP is 78% more expensive, potash is 116% higher, urea is 145% more expensive, UAN32 is 175% higher, UAN28 178% is more expensive and anhydrous is 202% higher compared to last year.

DTN surveys more than 300 retailers, gathering roughly 1,700 fertilizer price bids, to compile the DTN Fertilizer Index each week. In addition to national averages, MyDTN subscribers can access the full DTN Fertilizer Index, which includes state averages, here: .
