Siemens to supply turbines to USD 3 bln UK offshore wind farm

Published on Fri, 05 Jun 2015 43 times viewed

Bloomberg reported that ScottishPower Renewables Limited, selected Siemens AG to deliver turbines for a UK offshore wind farm in a deal that may be worth almost half the GBP 2 billion cost of the project.

ScottishPower said in an e-mailed statement that the utility chose Siemens as its preferred supplier to deliver as many as 102 of its 7 MW systems to the East Anglia One wind farm off Britain’s east coast. The deal is the largest yet for an approved facility in the country’s wind-power industry and it may be worth as much as GBP 850 million.

Ms Keith Anderson, CEO of ScottishPower Renewables, said in the statement that “The project will be the most cost-effective offshore wind farm ever delivered. Selecting the turbine supplier will be the single largest agreement for East Anglia One, and the most significant in terms of achieving important cost-reduction goals.”

Offshore wind is currently one of the most expensive clean-energy technologies costing about USD 176 a MWh compared with electricity from coal at about USD 91, Bloomberg estimates show. UK developers plan to cut this to 100 pounds, or about USD 153, a MWh by the turn of the decade.

ScottishPower’s facility will produce electricity at about GBP 119 a MWh and it will receive premium payments for its power through the UK government’s so-called contracts-for-difference auction. The project will create about 3,000 jobs and when it’s complete in 2020 it will be able to power about half a million homes.

Mr Tom Harries, an analyst at Bloomberg New Energy Finance, said that “Using the Siemens systems could aid in reducing costs through fewer turbines being required for the same sized project.”

First turbine installs at Kent offshore wind farm and 14 more to go

Canterbury Times reported that Swedish energy company Vattenfall has completed installation of the first of 15 turbines at its extension to the Kentish Flats Offshore Wind Farm off the coast of Whitstable and Herne Bay.

The extension will increase the size of the 30-turbine farm by 50% and once work is completed on the GBP 150 million extension, the wind farm will generate enough electricity to power up to 35,000 homes.

Mr Matthew Green, Vattenfall's project director for the construction of the scheme said that "One up, 14 to go. Vattenfall is making good progress on Kentish Flats Extension in this period of calm weather.”

Mr Green said that "Anyone watching from the shore will be able to watch a very challenging job with 155 tonne steel towers, 70 metres tall, in two sections getting lifted in one go and bolted onto the foundation, the nacelle, which houses the generator, at 160 tonnes, goes on top, followed by the hub into which three 55 metre blades, 12 tonnes each, are fitted.”

He said that "Big cranes, big boats, skilled technicians precisely slotting-in very heavy weights, 351 tonnes in total all done with safety top priority. Engineering doesn't get more challenging than this."

The extension to the Kentish Flats Offshore Wind Far, which has been operational since 2005, is expected to be completed later this year.

Last month, people in Herne Bay and Whitstable took to social media to complain about being kept awake all night by noise nuisance, believed to have been caused by work on the wind farm extension. Put upon neighbours said the racket was usually heard in the early hours of the morning.

The company said that there would be no more noise from offshore construction activity once the piling work was completed at the end of May.

Goldwind to build 175 MW White Rock wind farm in northern NSW

Chinese wind energy giant Goldwind has announced it will begin construction of the 175 MW White Rock wind farm in northern NSW in November, the second big wind farm to get the go-ahead since the revised renewable energy target legislation passed the Senate last month.

Goldwind announced that it has obtained agreement from Transgrid to connect the 70-turbine wind farm, located between Glenn Innes and Inverell, in the heart of Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce’s electorate.

white-rock-wind-farmLast week, a consortium led by GE announced financial closure for the 240MW Ararat wind farm, with construction to begin in the next few months.

Both GE and Goldwind are major wind turbine suppliers with massive balance sheets that have the financial grunt to support the building of their wind farms without power purchase agreements, unless smaller developers.

The Ararat wind farm has contracted 40% of its output to the ACT government, and decided to take merchant risk on the rest of the output, meaning it will sell electricity into the wholesale market.

Goldwind has neither a power purchase agreement or outside financing at this stage, but intends to negotiate these as the project moves forward. It took a similar approach in the construction of the Mortons Lane and Gullen Range wind farms.

Goldwind Australia managing director Mr John Titchen said that the passage of the RET had given clarity to the industry.

Mr Titchen said that “The removal of the 2 yearly review and the return to bipartisan RET support is welcome. White Rock Wind Farm is planned to be operating by mid-2017 at a time when new supply is needed due to increased demand under the renewable energy target.“

Goldwind bought the White Rock wind project from Spanish group Epuron at the height of RET uncertainty in October last year.

White Rock Wind Farm is located about 20kms West of Glen Innes in the New England Tablelands. The project has a development approval for up to 119 wind turbines with 70 wind turbines now planned to be built in the first phase.

It is the first big wind farm to be built north of Sydney. Queensland hosts one small 12 MW wind farm, and the White Rocks project is also in the heart of Joyce’s electorate.

Joyce once railed against wind farms, lamenting the “lemming-like” mentality to go renewable, and claiming they were expensive, didn’t work half the time, and will never replace coal, gas, hydro or nuclear. He also said last year that “Wind farms are one of those things that everybody likes as long as it’s not in their backyard.”

Goldwind said that it will utilise its 2.5 MW advanced technology, permanent magnet, direct drive wind turbines with a 121m rotor diameter at the White Rock wind farm. The wind farm is to be built on grazing country with eight landowners hosting turbines.

German green power forces neighbors to bolster blackout defenses

Published on Wed, 08 Jul 2015 71 times

Bloomberg reported that Germany’s drive to harness wind and solar power is producing so much electricity that it’s spilling over into neighbors’ grids and increasing the threat of blackouts.

Poland and the Czech Republic are spending USD 180 million on equipment to protect their systems from German power surges, while Austria is curbing some trading to prevent regional networks from collapsing. On a windy day, the overflow east can exceed the output from four atomic reactors.

Germany’s fivefold increase in green energy in the past decade has outpaced investment in power lines to move it across the country. Electricity is looping through Poland and the Czech Republic to reach southern Germany, where supply is constrained as Chancellor Angela Merkel shuts nuclear plants after the 2011 Fukushima disaster in Japan. The disruptions show the limits to the European Commission’s vision of a single power market.

Mr Zbynek Boldis, the head of trade and international relations at Czech grid CEPS AS, said in an interview in Budapest that “A huge accumulation of overflow increases the threat of a blackout. The root of the situation is allowing a huge amount of electricity to be generated regardless of the capacity of the grid.”

German grid companies plan to spend at least EUR 22 billion on high-voltage power lines as they upgrade their grids to accommodate more solar and wind power before the last of the eight remaining reactors close in 2022. Nine units generating almost 10 GW, enough to power 20 million European homes, have been shuttered since 2011, with the latest on June 27. Nuclear power now accounts for 16% of Germany’s electricity, compared with 26% for renewables.

German power overflows are increasingly forcing Poland to protect its grid from overloading and triggering a blackout. The nation’s grid operator had to double the amount of last-minute changes to power-plant output to balance the surges in the Q1 from a year earlier.

According to CEPS, on the windiest days, sometimes more than 50% of the power sent from northern Germany to its southern states and Austria travels through Poland and the Czech Republic.

Polish grid operator PSE SA said that the surges take up so much of its import capacity that there’s not enough remaining for it to regularly carry lower-cost German power that could be made available to commercial users. German electricity for delivery next year is about 18% cheaper than Polish power, close to the widest gap since at least 2008, broker data show.

Mr Henryk Kalis, the energy buyer for ZGH Boleslaw, a zinc processor controlled by ArcelorMittal, said that “My boss keeps asking why we aren’t buying power from Germany, but this is practically impossible.” The Bukowno, Poland-based company pays more than USD 26 million a year for electricity.

The Poles and Czechs will by the end of next year finish installing transformers on two power lines connecting with Germany to control the unplanned flows and help free up capacity that can be traded or auctioned off to domestic customers.

While that will ease the pressure from overflows, the Polish and Czech grids still face congestion from the demand for cheap German power in Austria, which shares a wholesale electricity market with Germany.

Gamesa to unveil off-grid power plant prototype next year

The Wall Street Journal reported that Spain’s Gamesa Corporación Tecnológica SAplans to start showing off a prototype of a new off-grid power plant early next year, opening a business line for one of the world’s biggest wind-turbine manufacturers.

The plant, which combines a windmill and a diesel generator, will be marketed to businesses that need power for operations without easy access to it, and for rural populations in countries such as India, Indonesia and the Philippines, Gamesa Chairman Mr Ignacio Martín said in an interview this week. Gamesa will offer the same prototype with solar power in areas where wind is less plentiful.

While the project is still in an embryonic stage, Mr Martín said that Gamesa hopes to make it a significant venture within a few years. He said that “This business offers great possibilities, hundreds of millions of people live in areas without ready access to electricity. Gamesa also wants to offer the power plants to industries that operate hundreds of miles away from power grids, such as mines in Chile’s Atacama Desert.”

A few other renewable energy companies, including Vestas Wind Systems AS, have sold a similar plant for a few years. But most off-grid power plants are diesel-powered. As oil prices plunged over the past year, operating such plants has remained costly. Mr. Martín said that a plant powered in part by wind or sun could cut generating costs significantly.

Gamesa, based in the northern Spanish city Bilbao, is looking for new income streams ahead of an expected slowdown in growth of turbine sales for onshore wind farms in the coming years.

Wind power generates 140pct of Denmark's electricity demand

The Guardian reported that so much power was produced by Denmark’s windfarms on Thursday that the country was able to meet its domestic electricity demand and export power to Norway, Germany and Sweden.

On an unusually windy day, Denmark found itself producing 116% of its national electricity needs from wind turbines yesterday evening. By 3am on Friday, when electricity demand dropped, that figure had risen to 140%.

Interconnectors allowed 80% of the power surplus to be shared equally between Germany and Norway, which can store it in hydropower systems for use later. Sweden took the remaining fifth of excess power.

Mr Oliver Joy, a spokesman for trade body the European Wind Energy Association, said that “It shows that a world powered 100% by renewable energy is no fantasy. Wind energy and renewables can be a solution to decarbonisation and also security of supply at times of high demand.”

Explosieven op zeebodem windenergiegebied Borssele
•Van onze redacteur

Gisteren, 12:52 Update: vandaag, 12:19

Finland to get less wind power as govt overhauls subsidies

Reuters reported that Finland's government proposed setting a November 2017 deadline for granting subsidies to wind power plants as applications exceeded a previously set capacity limit.

The decision, if approved by the parliament, would mean the end of the existing feed-in tariff system in Finland, and follows a decision by Britain to scrap all new subsidies for onshore wind from next April.

Finland's Ministry of Employment and Economy said in a statement that "The present system can no longer be considered a sufficiently cost-effective and market-oriented incentive system."

It said that the measure could save EUR 70-80 million in 2020.

The centre-right government has proposed the deadline to apply for subsidies as it has already received more applications than the system can accept under the 2,000 MW cap set earlier.

Plants with total 800 MW capacity have been already granted subsidies, while another 720 are likely to receive them and there are applications pending for another 1,100 MW.

The ministry said that "The aim of the proposal is, in accordance with the Government programme, to reduce spending in the state budget on production subsidies for wind energy."

The ministry estimates that not all wind power producers will be able to meet the November 2017 deadline, resulting in lower wind power output than previously estimated.

Officials said that they now expected output from wind power plants to reach less than 5 TWh in annual production by 2020, down from an original estimate.

They said that "The goal set by the EU for renewable energy in Finland for the year 2020 is not in jeopardy, even though the increase in wind energy achieved through the feed-in tariff system is falling below the originally planned 6 TWh."

The loss in wind power output will be compensated by an increase in production from biomass, and Finland is already close to its renewable energy target of 38%.

According to the European wind power association EWEA, Finland had 627 MW of wind power installed by the end of 2014, the lowest of the four Nordic countries.

Derde windpark Noordzee draait officieel

Door: redactie
21-9-15 - 12:23 bron: ANP

Solar and wind power just passes another big turning point

Sydney Morning Herald reported that Wind power is now the cheapest electricity to produce in both Germany and the UK, even without government subsidies. It's the first time that threshold has been crossed by a G7 economy.

But that's less interesting than what just happened in the world's largest economy, according to a Bloomberg analysis.

To appreciate what's going on in the US, you need to understand the capacity factor. That's the percentage of a power plant's maximum potential that's actually achieved over time.

Consider a solar project. The sun doesn't shine at night and, even during the day, varies in brightness with the weather and the seasons. So a project that can crank out 100MW hours of electricity during the sunniest part of the day might produce just 20% of that when averaged out over a year. That gives it a 20% capacity factor.

One of the major strengths of fossil fuel power plants is that they can command very high and predictable capacity factors. The average US natural gas plant, for example, might produce about 70% of its potential (falling short of 100% because of seasonal demand and maintenance). But that's what's changing, and it's a big deal.

For the first time, widespread adoption of renewables is effectively lowering the capacity factor for fossil fuels. That's because once a solar or wind project is built, the marginal cost of the electricity it produces is pretty much zero-free electricity while coal and gas plants require more fuel for every new watt produced. If you're a power company with a choice, you choose the free stuff every time.

It's a self-reinforcing cycle. As more renewables are installed, coal and natural gas plants are used less. As coal and gas are used less, the cost of using them to generate electricity goes up. As the cost of coal and gas power rises, more renewables will be installed.
