Seagreen Offshore Wind Farm gets Approval for Expansion Plans

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
20 Dec, 2021, 5:33 am

The under-construction Seagreen offshore wind farm has been granted consent for the elements required to add an additional grid connection and increase its capacity to 1.5GW from 1.1GW. Seagreen has consent to install 150 turbines, each with a capacity of 10MW, in a region of the outer Firth of Forth. But its grid connection agreement only covers 114 turbines through its initial link to the grid at Tealing, Angus. The developers, SSE and TotalEnergies, have therefore been looking to add a second grid connection further south at Cockenzie in East Lothian. The Scottish government has now consented the marine license application for the offshore elements of the second export cable. The East Lothian council also granted "planning permission in principle" for the onshore elements in August.

The developers planto hold a public consultation on the onshore sections required for the second link next year.

The first turbine was installed at Seagreen last week, with first power expected early next year and commercial operation of the initial 1.1GW to begin in 2023.

20 Dec, 2021, 5:34 am

Pioneer in wind propulsion solutions for shipping Airseas has completed the first installation of its automated kite Seawing on a commercial vessel, marking an important milestone in the deployment of wind-assisted technologies to curb emissions from shipping. The first Seawing system has been installed on the vessel Ville de Bordeaux, chartered by Airbus and operated by Louis Dreyfus Armateurs. The Ro-Ro ship, which transports major aircraft components between France and the United States, will deploy the 500m2 Seawing on its monthly transatlantic journeys from January 2022, conducting six months of sea trials and testing ahead of its full operation.

Airseas has received formal approval from leading classification society Bureau Veritas to begin operations at sea, following three years of close collaboration on the development and early trials of the Seawing.

Founded by former Airbus engineers, Airseas is unique in its integration of expertise from the aeronautical sector, including digital twin and automation technology, to the maritime industry. This means that the Seawing can be safely deployed, operated and stored at the push of a button, and can be retrofitted on a ship in two days.

Airseas’ full size Seawing is a 1000m2 parafoil which flies at an altitude of 300 metres, capturing the strength of the wind to propel the vessel. Based on modelling and preliminary testing on land, Airseas estimates that the Seawing system will enable an average 20% reduction in fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Vestas to Scale Up Blade Recycling Partnership Solution Offering

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
23 Dec, 2021, 3:53 am

Vestas has been delivering a blade recycling partnership solution for several wind farm operators across the USA. Vestas is currently carrying out this service in the USA and is open to offering the solution in more regions where local recycling infrastructure is robust, and customer demand can be established. The first large scale project was successfully completed in September, and saw Vestas service teams decommission and recycle 10 turbine blades. Several ongoing projects are currently in progress across multiple sites, including the 151 MW Blue Canyon 2 repowering project, as well as the 63 MW Snyder Wind project with Enel Green Power. Recycling of the decommissioned blades was a firm requirement from the operators of both projects. At present, all ongoing recycling projects in the USA have reached a scale of 285 turbines blades in total, including nacelle covers and hub covers.

As part of the solution, Vestas teams scope an optimal recycling project plan to align with locally available solutions and customer needs. The recyclable glass fiber material is then separated from the turbine and cut into transportable units. The material is then transported to vetted recycling partners, using a glass fiber recycling method that aligns with the customer’s sustainability ambitions. Recycling methods can include cement co-processing, gasification, forming new composite materials, and reclaiming glass fiber and carbon fibers.

EBRD Lends Support to Boost Wind Power in Poland

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
27 Dec, 2021, 5:30 am

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development will lend PLN 175 millionfor the development, construction and operation of two wind farms in Poland with a total capacity of 63.1 MW. The EBRD financing makes up half of a bigger loan package for Grajewo and Sulmierzyce wind farms, which are ultimately owned by funds managed by DIF Capital Partners, an independent global infrastructure fund manager expanding its renewables investment footprint in Poland. The projects’ commercial parallel lender is DNB ASA, with Denmark’s ECA EKF providing guarantee for a portion of the term loan.

The projects, which are expected to generate more than 182.4GWh of renewable zero-carbon electricity a year, leading to carbon emissions savings of almost 140,000 tonnes per year, will support Poland’s ongoing energy transition as it shifts away from its reliance on coal.

Poland currently uses coal, the most polluting fossil fuel, for over 70 per cent of its electricity generation. It faces one of the most significant energy transition challenges of all the EBRD’s countries of operation as it moves to align with the goals of the Paris Agreement on limiting global warming to no more than 1.5C.

Keeping up the momentum of its green energy transition is vital for Poland as European Union ambitions grow. In December 2020, the European Council agreed to increase the bloc-wide emissions reduction target from 40 per cent to 55 per cent.

Offshore Wind Farm Hornsea 2 Generates First Power

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
30 Dec, 2021, 5:30 am

First power on Hornsea 2, which is located 89 km off the UK's east coast, was achieved after its offshore substation, the world’s largest offshore AC substation, and reactive compensation station, were installed in late October 2021. Since that time, Ørsted and its partner companies have been working hard to commission and energise the wind farm in preparation for its anticipated operational date next year.

Once Hornsea 2 is completed, power will be transferred from the 165 wind turbines via 373 km of array cables to the OSS and RCS, reaching the national grid via 390 km of offshore and 40 km of onshore export cables which terminate at the onshore substation in Killingholme.

A further two projects in the Hornsea Zone are also underway with Hornsea 3 receiving a Development Consent Order in December 2020 and Hornsea 4 currently going through the planning process. Collectively, the projects would make a significant contribution to the UK government’s target of achieving net-zero by 2050.
