20 Apr, 2022, 6:30 am

The Spanish government aims to transform its energy mix and plans to develop up to 3 GW offshore Wind by 2030. The first Spanish offshore wind auction is expected to be in the Canary region in 2023 and here Equinor and Naturgy are jointly assessing the opportunity to develop and construct a floating offshore wind project. The cooperation is in line with the two companies’ joint ambition of utilizing their complementary capabilities to develop renewables in Spain, starting with commercial floating wind projects. With more than 90% of the Spanish offshore wind areas being deep waters, Spain has an exciting opportunity to spearhead the next wave of floating offshore wind in Europe.

The Spanish energy company will contribute with its experience from onshore wind in Spain and Equinor with its proven capabilities in floating offshore wind technology and development.

“We are very pleased with the agreement reached with the Norwegian energy company Equinor, because it allows us to promote the commitment to renewables, contributing with our experience in the development, construction and operation of onshore wind energy, as well as extensive knowledge of the Spanish market," says Jorge Barredo, managing director of Renewables, New Businesses and Innovation in Naturgy.

Spain plays a key role in the supply chain for offshore wind in the rest of Europe and Equinor has a long history of working together with the Spanish offshore supply industry. Key components like floating substructure, the tower, and the mooring at Equinor’s Hywind Scotland floating wind farm were produced in Spain.

RWE Signs Grid Pact with Energinet for Thor Offshore Wind

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
20 Apr, 2022, 6:30 am

RWE has signed an agreement with the Danish grid operator Energinet for its Thor Offshore Wind Farm. The agreement regulates the technical set-up, the power quality and the cooperation between RWE and Energinet, at the point of connection in Volder Mark. With a planned capacity of around 1,000 megawatts Thor will be Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm to date. The wind farm will be built off the Danish west coast approximately 22 kilometers from the port of Thorsminde.

To connect the offshore wind farm to the grid, Energinet will construct a new 220 kilovolt (kV) station - as part of the 220/400 kV conversion of the existing 400 kV station in Idomlund. From there, 28 kilometers of cables will be laid underground to connect to a new 220 kV station (POC) to be constructed at Volder Mark, which is located 4 km from the coastline. At Volder Mark the electricity generated by the offshore wind farm will be delivered to the grid.

Once fully operational, which is planned to be no later than 2027, Thor would be capable of producing enough green electricity to supply the equivalent of more than one million Danish households. As something new for offshore wind in Denmark, developer RWE will construct and pay for the entire offshore electrical high voltage system up to POC, and also pay for the onshore grid connection. This is regulated by a concession agreement signed with the Danish Energy Agency (Energistyrelsen) in January.

Published on :
21 Apr, 2022, 6:30 am

Repsol and Orsted have an ambition of jointly becoming a leading developer in Spanish offshore wind by combining their complementary strengths. The alliance combines Repsol’s expertise as a global multi-energy provider with Ørsted's experience as the global leader in offshore wind. After several years of concept development and small-scale testing, floating offshore wind is now on the brink of commercialisation, and the global floating offshore wind market is expected to reach 21 GW of installed capacity by 2035, according to estimates from Bloomberg New Energy Finance. Spain targets 3 GW floating offshore wind by 2030, and the Spanish supply chain is well-prepared to enter floating offshore wind on the back of decades of experience from supplying to Spain’s massive fleet of onshore wind farms.

Renewable power generation is one of the pillars of Repsol's decarbonisation strategy. The company recently raised its installed capacity targets for 2030 to 20 GW, an increase of 60% compared to the previous target. By 2025, installed capacity will increase to 6 GW. In October 2021, Repsol increased its investment ambitions for low-carbon projects. Between 2021 and 2025, the Madrid-based multi-energy company will allocate an additional EUR 1 billion to low-carbon projects, raising the total to EUR 6.5 billion from the EUR 5.5 billion set out in its strategic plan approved in November 2020. Moreover, in December 2019, Repsol became the first company in its sector to commit to carbon neutrality by 2050.

Vattenfall Turbine Foundation Creates New Home for Marine Life

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
21 Apr, 2022, 6:30 am

Vattenfall has joined forces with Dutch nature conservation organization De Rijke Noordzee on a study to find out how the nature inclusive design of turbine foundations can support marine life. The study is performed at Hollandse Kust Zuid, the biggest offshore wind farm in the world. Water replenishment holes in the wind turbine foundations offer an opportunity for fish and other marine species to enter and leave again. The joint study of Vattenfall and De Rijke Noordzee is the first time that research is conducted into what the water replenishment holes could mean for marine life.

The study is aimed at finding out to what extent the inside of the turbine foundations can be used by marine life to settle, shelter and as a feeding ground. The study is conducted at the Hollandse Kust Zuid wind farm, located 18 to 34 kilometers off the Dutch coast, between the city of The Hague and Zandvoort,

The elliptical openings measure approximately 30 centimeters by 1 meter and are located above the seabed and just below the water surface. Over the next couple of years data will be collected on several occasions to check the development of biodiversity. Last winter, scientists from De Rijke Noordzee carried out their first series of measurements. Findings will be included in a toolbox called “Nature development in wind parks” that De Rijke Noordzee will develop. Its open-source character makes it easy and cost-efficient to reuse in new projects.

Vattenfall wants to increase biodiversity in wind farms and gain more insights. Gijs Nijsten, responsible for sustainability at Hollandse Kust Zuid.

Ampyx doet heel toffe dingen."

Iberdrola Starts Construction of Askio III Wind Farm in Greece

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
05 May, 2022, 6:30 am

Iberdrola is making progress in the development of its renewable energy projects in Greece with the start of construction of the 50.4 MW Askio III wind farm. This facility will be located next to the Askio mountain, near the city of Kozani, in the region of Western Macedonia. The wind farm will have 12 wind turbines with a unit capacity of 4.2 MW, with 70-metre-long blades and a rotor diameter (the set of blades and the piece that joins them to the main shaft) of 150 metres.

The blade lifter technique was chosen for transporting the blades, which minimises the environmental impact associated with the transport of these components, in line with Iberdrola's commitment to sustainability in all its activities. This method is based on a 10-axle trailer that incorporates an articulated platform which, in addition to rotating, can tilt vertically, making it possible to move it along existing roads and tracks. In this way, it reduces the need to build additional accesses and reduces the environmental and landscape impact.

The company expects to complete the work next autumn and thus avoid the frequent snowfalls that usually occur in the area in the winter months. In addition to this challenge, the works are conditioned by the steepness of the terrain and the difficult weather conditions in the high mountains.

In addition to Askio III, the Iberdrola group is also building the 33.6 MW Mikronoros wind farm in Greece (in Rhodopi) and plans to start construction this year on the 18 MW Rokani (in Viotia), which will have the largest wind turbines available, and the 37.8 MW Askio II, also in Kozani.

Federaal minister Pierre-Yves Dermagne bezoekt platform Arcadis Ost in Aalborg (DK)
