Joe Biden’s unexpectedly rapid consolidation of the Democratic presidential nomination has upended calculations in both parties about the U.S. Senate landscape, with Democrats hopeful that Biden can actively help with close races and Republicans increasingly nervous about losing their 53-47 majority.

Former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen being released from prison amid coronavirus
Cohen is currently locked up at FCI Otisville in New York after pleading guilty to numerous charges, including campaign finance fraud and lying to Congress.

President Donald Trump’s former lawyer and longtime fixer Michael Cohen will be released from federal prison to serve the remainder of his sentence in home confinement amid the coronavirus pandemic, a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press.

Cohen is currently locked up at FCI Otisville in New York after pleading guilty to numerous charges, including campaign finance fraud and lying to Congress. He will remain under quarantine for 14 days before he is released. Federal statistics show 14 inmates and seven staff members at the prison have tested positive for coronavirus.

After he is released, Cohen will serve the remainder of his sentence at home, according to the person, who could not discuss the matter publicly and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.

Cohen’s release comes as prison advocates and congressional leaders have been pressing the Justice Department for weeks to release at-risk inmates ahead of a potential outbreak, arguing that the public health guidance to stay 6 feet away from other people is nearly impossible behind bars.

Trump ‘visibly agitated’ over Michael Cohen jail release and upcoming tell-all book on what ‘he’s said and done with women’

According to a report from the Daily Beast, Donald Trump was very displeased that his former lawyer and “fixer” Michael Cohen was given an early release from jail due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Cohen, who had been serving three years as part of a plea deal over making hush-money payments in the service of the president, has been working on a tell-all book about Trump that is reportedly going to be released before the election.

According to the report, “the president was visibly agitated, bemoaning the early release of Michael Cohen, his former fixer and lawyer turned ‘rat’ for the feds.”

One source close to the president stated, “He was not pleased when he found out Michael was getting out early.”

Of greater concern to the president is the book, with the report stating Trump may try to block its release via the courts.

According to the report, the president is, “… pursuing legal options against Cohen, if anything in his ex-fixer’s upcoming, dishy book on Trump breaks attorney-client privilege or is deemed defamatory or libelous, according to two individuals familiar with the matter.”

“Trump is said to be particularly irritated by what Cohen could detail in his upcoming, potentially explosive memoir, which was first reported by The Daily Beast, and whether its contents would perturb Trump enough to sue Cohen. This new manuscript comes two years after Cohen’s hopes of publishing a prior memoir—a pro-Trump screed with the working title of Trump Revolution—were dashed amid his escalating legal woes,” the report continues.

According to an associate of Cohen, “The stories that will be in the book aren’t privileged. The stories wouldn’t violate attorney-client privilege. They are stories about Trump’s personality and behavior that would raise an eyebrow. There are stories about what it’s like being around this man and things that he did that most people typically do not do. A lot of it will be about looking at things he’s said and done with women and other [politically incorrect] things. It’ll be an insider’s look about what it was like to be alongside the president for 12 years.”

WASHINGTON — For President Trump, who adores the pomp and precision of military ceremonies, this was the year he would finally get one of the special perks of being president — delivering the commencement address at West Point, the only service academy where he has not spoken.
But the graduation was postponed because of the coronavirus, the cadets were sent home and officials at the school were not sure when it would be held or even whether it was a good idea to hold it.
The Naval Academy, for its part, decided it was too risky to recall its nearly 1,000 graduating midshipmen to Annapolis, Md., for a commencement. Those graduates will have a virtual event. But the Air Force Academy, in contrast to the other schools, sent home its underclassmen, locked down its seniors on campus, moved up graduation, mandated social distancing — and went ahead with plans for Vice President Mike Pence to be its speaker.
And so last Friday, the day before Mr. Pence was to speak at the Air Force ceremony in Colorado, Mr. Trump, never one to be upstaged, abruptly announced that he would, in fact, be speaking at West Point.

That was news to everyone, including officials at West Point, according to three people involved with or briefed on the event. The academy had been looking at the option of a delayed presidential commencement in June, but had yet to complete any plans. With Mr. Trump’s pre-emptive statement, they are now summoning 1,000 cadets scattered across the country to return to campus in New York, the state that is the center of the outbreak.
“He’s the commander in chief, that’s his call,” said Sue Fulton, a West Point graduate and former chairwoman of the academy’s Board of Visitors. “Cadets are certainly excited about the opportunity to have something like the classic graduation, standing together, flinging their hats in the air.
Help us report in critical moments.

“But everyone is leery about bringing 1,000 cadets into the New York metropolitan area for a ceremony,” she added. “It’s definitely a risk.”
Mr. Trump, like some of his predecessors, has used the annual commencement addresses at the country’s military academies to promote his foreign policy successes and project strength, something he needs to do in the middle of a pandemic that has kept him in the White House in the middle of an election year.

To accommodate Trump’s sudden decision to speak at West Point, cadets will be called back, tested off campus, then isolated for 14 days in rooms with masks. They’ll eat in segregated groups. No decision on whether family members may attend.

Of the 20 counties in the nation with the most deaths per capita from covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, five are in southwest Georgia, including Early, where Means lives. In the state’s hardest-hit places, African Americans make up most of the population, and about 30 percent of residents live in poverty. They’ve struggled for years with a severe lack of access to health care. Some counties have no doctors, no hosperitals and a high percentage of uninsured residents. The facilities and physicians already were stretched thin.

Then came the coronavirus, fast-moving and super-infectious, preying on the elderly and those with underlying health problems — perfectly primed to devastate a vulnerable population.

Opinion: Trump delivered on coronavirus, getting the Fed and Congress to act decisively

Mr. Trump’s New Deal: Fed reforms and pragmatic government policies to benefit ordinary citizens when help is needed most

President Donald Trump has delivered for the voters that elected him — and many who didn’t. With the economic policy response to the coronavirus pandemic, his administration has pushed the Federal Reserve to innovate and warring factions in Congress to make deals.
Trump was slow to acknowledge the threat posed by the pandemic emerging in China — then spreading to Italy, the American West Coast and the New York metro area — but so were governors like Andrew Cuomo and leaders of larger Western European economies. The latter did not respond as quickly with containment measures like social distancing as poorer countries in Central and Eastern Europe who are suffering fewer casualties.

With the aid of an epidemic, Trump has forced the Washington establishment to act quickly for the benefit of ordinary working folks through the Federal Reserve and the stimulus package.
As Chinese and then Western leaders acted, the coronavirus created a menacing supply-side shock — shortages of Chinese components for factories and products on store shelves and the shutdown of businesses in New York, California and many other states. And then a classic Keynesian contraction — the collapse of spending as Americans sheltered in place.

Over the past five weeks, 26 million Americans have filed for unemployment benefits, many others are working at reduced speed at home or fewer hours at workplaces still open, and the observed unemployment rate is likely headed for 20%. That translates into a similar loss in GDP.
If a second wave of infections materializes as the history of epidemics indicates, both those sad numbers could worsen.

Many corporations and small businesses don’t have enough cash to tide them over. Without lines of credit, many will permanently close — some smaller firms already have. Banks can’t be expected to extend too much credit when no one knows when the economy will fully reopen or what the new normal will look like.

After cutting interest rates to near zero and purchasing massive amounts of bonds — throwing the proverbial kitchen sink to no avail—Jerome Powell acted outside the box — the traditional playbook prescribed by academic economists and central bankers.
The Fed is becoming a private asset manager and investment banker — buying and underwriting corporate, state and municipal bonds, credit card debt and auto loans — and a private commercial bank — lending directly to corporations and small businesses. Even propping up the bonds of firms downgraded below investment grade as a consequence of the recession.

The Fed needs agents on Wall Street and at local banks to execute all this. The Fed has no loan officers or corporate bond traders at its Constitution Avenue headquarters or regional branches, but its balance sheet will shoulder the risks with an infusion of Treasury capital.

The stimulus package provides one-time direct cash payments from the IRS to households with incomes up to $198,000, temporary weekly unemployment insurance payments of $600 to supplement ordinary state benefits, unemployment benefits to private contractors and gig workers, and other loans and grants through the Small Business Administration.

The usual congressional factions that block everything — liberals that decry bailouts for business and conservatives who are repulsed by payments that could discourage the unemployed from seeking new jobs — were outmaneuvered.

Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Sens. Chuck Schumer and Mitch McConnell made the usual noises but quietly cut a deal that, as it should, makes no one completely happy. Then they effectively told the ideological wings of the Democratic and Republican Parties to scream all they like but vote yes or get nothing.

With loan money that may be converted to grants for small businesses exhausted, Democrats and Republicans have compromised to provide another $310 billion for small businesses plus additional money for hospitals, testing and other purposes.

Now that the Fed is a commercial lender and private bond buyer, several members of Congress recognize establishing accounts at the Fed for ordinary folks — creating digital dollars — would better enable the Treasury to more quickly dole out future stimulus payments to households.

Currently, ordinary folks have to pay retailers with paper money that no one wants to carry around or bank-sponsored credit cards that come with hefty fees. Digital dollars would make no-fee direct payments a reality.

That’s Mr. Trump’s New Deal — Fed reforms and pragmatic government policies to benefit ordinary citizens when help is needed most.

Corruptie tiert welig nu Trump de eindcontrole heeft in het steunprogramma in verband met het corona virus.

Firms with Trump links or worth $100 million got small business loans

Three companies with ties to the Trump admin received millions under the PPP program. Another got a loan from a bank that once employed its board's chair.

The government's $349 billion small business lending program was designed to keep merchants afloat during the COVID-19 crisis. But critics say the structure of the program allowed the haves to scoop up aid meant for the have-nots, shutting out small merchants who were desperate for cash and awarding funds to public companies that could have raised money from investors.

While the government has not yet identified the entities that received the funding under the program, an in-depth analysis of almost 200 recipients by NBC News raises questions about some of them.

The analysis shows three companies with ties to the Trump administration received a total of $18.3 million under the program.

Blame the Democrats for any “lateness” in your Enhanced Unemployment Insurance. I wanted the money to be paid directly, they insisted it be paid by states for distribution. I told them this would happen, especially with many states which have old computers.

How Do I Apply?
To receive unemployment insurance benefits, you need to file a claim with the unemployment insurance program in the state where you worked. Depending on the state, claims may be filed in person, by telephone, or online.

Why should the people and taxpayers of America be bailing out poorly run states (like Illinois, as example) and cities, in all cases Democrat run and managed, when most of the other states are not looking for bailout help? I am open to discussing anything, but just asking?

Toen McConnell het opperde was de reaktie zo overweldigend positief dat trump dacht, kom ik doe ook een duit in het zakje, stijgt m'n populariteit vast weer een paar punten.

........

That’s Mr. Trump’s New Deal — Fed reforms and pragmatic government policies to benefit ordinary citizens when help is needed most.

www.marketwatch.com/story/trump-deliv...
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) would rather see states declare bankruptcy than give them federal aid to deal with the economic collapse triggered by the coronavirus pandemic.

That’s a recipe for turning a potentially short recession into a prolonged depression, according to officials and analysts.

Governors, mayors and county leaders of both parties are clamoring for help in the next federal rescue package after McConnell and President Trump blocked such assistance in the $484 billion bill approved last week.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D) says the next bill must include state and local aid, but Trump has sent mixed signals about whether he will support it. McConnell and many other Senate Republicans are resisting.

...

In an earlier relief package passed last month, Congress approved $150 billion for state and local governments — but with an important condition. It said the money could be spent only to cover new costs of fighting the virus, and not to replace revenue lost because of the economic slump. State and local leaders are calling for the next bill to eliminate that restriction.

...

A few weeks ago, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R), in his role as head of the National Governors Association, asked for $500 billion to help states stabilize decimated budgets.

But the White House and Senate Republicans blocked such aid in last week’s package.

...

They said they feared that states and localities would move more slowly to reopen their economies if they received federal assistance. State and local leaders retorted that they will open their economies as soon as public health authorities say it’s safe to do so.

“Every elected official wants to reopen their economy,” said Matthew Chase, executive director of the National Association of Counties. “We are incredibly disappointed that we are left behind and asked to wait for the next package.”

The other argument against federal aid, voiced by McConnell, is that it would bail out states that he said have mismanaged their finances in the past, such as by incurring large pension obligations for teachers and other public employees. In a radio interview Wednesday, McConnell suggested instead that states declare bankruptcy.

...

Our region’s (MD, DC en VA) state and local governments are bracing for severe spending cuts, with the burden expected to fall heavily on two areas that make up a large part of their budgets — education and health care.

Virginia has already suspended plans to increase spending on K-12 education by $540 million over two years, higher education by $356 million and Medicaid by $207 million.

...

McConnell’s attacks on states’ fiscal management drew sharp rebukes from area officials. They noted that Virginia, Maryland and the District also have Triple-A bond ratings. Additionally, states, unlike Congress, are required to balance their budgets.

McKay noted: “Fairfax has a Triple-A bond rating and a balanced budget. Compare that to Mitch McConnell’s record on deficits. It’s laughable.”
