Tjonge.

After instituting a $1.5 trillion tax cut and signing off on a $675 billion budget for the Department of Defense, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Tuesday that the only way to lower the record-high federal deficit would be to cut entitlement programs like Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.

"It’s disappointing, but it’s not a Republican problem," McConnell said of the deficit, which grew 17 percent to $779 billion in fiscal year 2018. McConnell explained to Bloomberg that "it’s a bipartisan problem: Unwillingness to address the real drivers of the debt by doing anything to adjust those programs to the demographics of America in the future." The deficit has increased 77 percent since McConnell became majority leader in 2015.

New Treasury Department analysis on Monday revealed that corporate tax cuts had a significant impact on the deficit this year. Federal revenue rose by 0.04 percent in 2018, a nearly 100 percent decrease on last year’s 1.5 percent. In fiscal year 2018, tax receipts on corporate income fell to $205 billion from $297 billion in 2017.
The deficit has increased 77 percent since McConnell became majority leader in 2015.

Still, McConnell insisted that the change had nothing to do with a lack of revenue or increased spending and instead was due to entitlement and welfare programs. The debt, he said, was very “disturbing” and driven by “the three big entitlement programs that are very popular, Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid.… There’s been a bipartisan reluctance to tackle entitlement changes because of the popularity of those programs. Hopefully, at some point here, we’ll get serious about this.”

President Donald Trump promised to leave Medicare untouched on the campaign trail, but Republican leaders like House Speaker Paul Ryan and Florida Senator Marco Rubio have long indicated their desire to cut entitlement programs to pay for their tax cuts.

President Donald Trump’s trade war with China will force many U.S. companies to join Apple Inc. in announcing lower than expected earnings, the chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers said.

“It’s not going to be just Apple,” CEA chairman Kevin Hassett said in an interview on CNN. “There are a heck of a lot of U.S. companies that have sales in China that are going to be watching their earnings being downgraded next year until we get a deal with China.”

Hassett argued that it is a softer economy in China that is cutting into U.S. companies sales there and that economic pain gives Trump leverage in ongoing trade negotiations. “That puts a lot of pressure on China to make a deal,” he said.

In the long run, U.S. companies should benefit despite the short-term damage to their bottom line, he added.

“If we have a successful negotiation with China then Apple’s sales and everybody else’s sales will recover,” he said, before predicting that U.S. economic growth would continue to be strong

Apple said Wednesday that the company’s sales will be about $84 billion in the quarter ended Dec. 29, down from earlier estimates of $89 billion to $93 billion. It was the first time the company cut its revenue outlook in nearly two decades. Apple shares fell as much as 9.6 percent as the market opened in New York on Thursday.

Apple’s announcement “is something that one should expect,” Hassett said.

“The Chinese economy is slowing in a way that I haven’t seen in a decade,” he said. “That’s going to be bad” for U.S. companies that have a lot of business in China, he added.

The United States Treasury has taken in MANY billions of dollars from the Tariffs we are charging China and other countries that have not treated us fairly. In the meantime we are doing well in various Trade Negotiations currently going on. At some point this had to be done!

Trump Trade War - UK steel exports to US down 20pct - Report

Mirror Co UK reported that British steel exports to the US have plummeted by 20% since Donald Trump slapped tariffs on metals arriving in America, we can reveal. Senior industry sources disclosed the impact of the 25% tariffs amid mounting fears for the sector if Britain crashes out of the EU without a deal. UK firms sent 73,000 fewer tonnes of steel to the US in the first nine months of this year compared with the same period in 2017.

A UK Steel briefing paper, seen by the Mirror, warns the situation could worsen as steel which is no longer sent to America is exported to other markets instead. The document said that “The EU is the largest open market for steel in the world and is therefore a prime target for import surges. The threat of injury to EU industry is therefore significant. The data are now clearly showing a drop off in imports into the US and this has started to cause deflection towards the EU.”

Labour MP Stephen Kinnock, whose constituency includes Britain’s biggest steelworks, Port Talbot, accused the President of reckless, bullying tactics. He said that “Mr Trump’s short-sighted, scatter-gun steel tariffs are having a seriously negative impact on our access to the US market”.
