22 Aug, 2022, 5:30 am

Hydrogen is an important source of green energy because it has a high energy density, low capital costs and can be easily transported using the existing energy network. To store the green energy for peak demands, hydrogen is filled into caverns in deep layers of the earth. European energy infrastructure company Bilfinger is supporting with the engineering of an underground hydrogen storage facility near Zuidwending in the Netherlands. This new green hydrogen storage facility will store green energy from sources such as wind parks or photovoltaic installations that is available in the short and long-term and will offset any future imbalance in supply and demand of green hydrogen. Bilfinger will deliver the Basic Engineering for the entire plant, including equipment, piping, pipelines, buildings, infrastructure etc. The facility will inject the green hydrogen into caverns into deep underground salt layers.

Bilfinger will provide the basic engineering for the above-ground installation. This will give Gasunie a precise picture of the storage facility with all technical, safety and environmental requirements. Bilfinger and Gasunie have been working together for many years and are benefitting from the knowledge and experience gained from former natural gas storage facilities.

The compressor stations will inject around 76 million cubic meters of hydrogen gas into each of the four planned caverns. The aim is to establish a total storage capacity of approximately 26 million kg of hydrogen. The large-scale hydrogen storage site is a completely new approach and will be managed by a multidisciplinary team at Bilfinger with extensive technical knowledge and experience. The installation and first hydrogen cavern is scheduled to be operational by 2026 and will be an important part of the hydrogen infrastructure in the Netherlands.

Succes

H2 Green Steel & BMW Sign Pact for Delivery of CO2-Reduced Steel

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
23 Aug, 2022, 6:46 am

Global auto giant BMW Group and Swedish start up H2 Green Steel have signed a final contract on the delivery of CO2 reduced steel. The agreement addresses BMW Group’s upstream scope 3 emissions and includes recycling and end-of-life management measures. As part of solidifying a binding agreement, BMW Group and H2 Green Steel have also agreed on technical cooperation which will include several measures that address BMW Group’s Science Based Targets and contribute to meeting its ambitious CO2 reduction timeline.

H2 Green Steel is committed to the Scope 1, 2 and upstream Scope 3 requirements as defined in the GHG Protocol. The company has a gross embodied carbon emission intensity obligation per tonne of steel, included in its customer contracts. H2 Green Steel’s work to reduce emissions will impact BMW Group’s material supply chain and its upstream Scope 3 emissions.

Additionally, recycling scrap is an important part of the equation which further ensures circularity. In a pioneering move, both companies have therefore agreed to have 40% of the pre-consumer steel scrap of the volumes returned to H2 Green Steel's electric arc furnaces for re-cycling.

According to H2 Green Steel’s definition of green steel, actual CO2 reductions and improving circularity are both key. Therefore, green steel must be produced from a combination of a significant amount of green virgin iron and scrap in a production process which uses electricity from renewable energy sources. The total CO2 emissions in such a process must be more than 90%t lower than that of traditional steelmaking in a blast furnace process.

H2 Green Steel was founded in 2020 with the ambition to accelerate the decarbonization of the steel industry, using green hydrogen. Steel, which is one of the world’s largest carbon dioxide emitters, is the company’s first business vertical. The founder and largest shareholder of H2 Green Steel is Vargas, which is also co-founder and one of the larger shareholders in Swedish battery maker Northvolt. H2 Green Steel is headquartered in Stockholm in Sweden, with its first green steel plant under development in Boden in northern Sweden. After receiving the permissibility for its 5 million tonne steel plant in northern Sweden on 1 July, the company moves into the construction phase of its journey towards producing green steel.

Brazil Establishes National Hydrogen Program

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
23 Aug, 2022, 5:30 am

Brazil’s National Energy Policy Council CNPE has established the National Hydrogen Program PNH2. According to the governance structure of the PNH2, the coordination and supervision of the planning and implementation of activities will be the responsibility of a Management Committee, made up of various bodies and entities of the Federal Public Administration. The objective is to strengthen the hydrogen market and industry as an energy vector in Brazil.

In recent years, the hydrogen market has become a priority in the climate and energy strategy of several countries, as it provides an alternative for sectors that are difficult to reduce carbon emissions. In addition, hydrogen is also an energy vector, which enables storage and favors the coupling of the energy sector with those of industry and transport.

Brazil has great potential to stand out in this market, given the competitive advantage presented, with more than 80% of the electricity matrix coming from renewable sources. In addition, Brazil has a wide range of energy resources that can be used for the production of low-carbon hydrogen through different technological routes.

The use of hydrogen as an energy vector still presents significant technological and market challenges, throughout its entire energy chain production, transport, storage and consumption. This imposes the need for a structured look at market and industry development. In this way, the strategic orientation aims to develop a hydrogen economy in Brazil in harmony with the other sources of our energy matrix.
