Enapter Starts Production of Water-Cooled AEM Electrolyser

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
8 Mar, 2023, 3:30 am

Enapter has started production of the water-cooled variant of its AEM Electrolyser EL 4.0, expanding its product range with a new standardised device. The AEM Electrolyser EL 4.0 Liquid-Cooled enables the direct connection of an external cooling system to optimise thermal management and make efficient use of waste heat.

The unit is particularly suitable for producing green hydrogen at locations and operating sites where, due to external conditions, sufficient cooling by means such as exhaust air systems is not possible – and in systems where customers wish to use the waste heat produced more efficiently.

The heat is released via a secondary circuit and can be combined with a heat pump. A common cooling circuit with other components such as water-cooled fuel cells is also possible.

Due to the external water cooling, this electrolyser offers the best conditions for installations in smaller rooms and containers. Moreover, the dissipation of heat through external pipes proves particularly effective when combining several EL 4.0 LC units in a cluster. Thus, at different coolant inlet temperatures, between 600W and 900W of heat (with an increasing trend from the beginning to the end of life) can be extracted from each unit and made available for external applications.

Like the air-cooled variant already in production, the EL 4.0 LC is also easy to integrate and simple to scale for systems of different sizes depending on the application requirements. The combination with an external cooling circuit also increases the degree of flexibility on the user side and makes it possible to create an individual setup that can be perfectly matched to the needs of demanding customer groups.

The AEM Electrolyser EL 4.0 LC is offered in both AC and DC versions. The current delivery times for the EL 4.0 range from 2 to 12 weeks on average, depending on the order size. Enapter has already received the first orders for the new variant.

Maasvlakte krijgt er schone energie bij: ontwerp waterstoffabriek van start
Door THEO BESTEMAN

Gisteren, 21:06
in FINANCIEEL

CityU Develops Novel Electrocatalysts for Hydrogen Production

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
9 Mar, 2023, 3:30 am

Two efficient and inexpensive novel electrocatalysts for hydrogen production offering sustainable green solutions for the energy crisis have been developed by City University of Hong Kong. A research team co-led by CityU materials scientists has recently developed an innovative, ultra-stable and highly efficient Hydrogen Evolution Reaction electrocatalyst. The experiments found that the new catalyst exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity, long- term durability and ultra-stability. The new electrocatalyst is based on two-dimensional mineral gel nanosheets and does not contain any precious metals. It can be produced on a large scale and help achieve a lower hydrogen price in the future.

The new electrocatalyst, based on AlMnRu (aluminium, manganese and ruthenium) films, has a crystalline-amorphous (non-crystalline) dual-phase nanostructure. Dual-phase materials are needed because each phase has separate benefits: the local chemical inhomogeneity, short-range order and severe lattice distortion in the nanocrystalline phase are desirable, while the amorphous phase offers abundant active sites with a lower energy barrier for hydrogen evolution reaction.

Compared with other common single-atom substrate precursors, such as porous frameworks and carbon, we found that mineral hydrogels have great advantages for the mass production of electrocatalysts owing to the easy availability of the raw materials, a simple, environmentally friendly synthetic procedure, and mild reaction conditions, says Professor Lu Jian, Chair Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at CityU, who led the research.

Electrochemical HER is a widely used hydrogen-generation method. Commercial HER electrocatalysts are made from expensive precious metals. A promising type of HER electrocatalyst intensively studied by scientists is single-atom catalysts for their potential in catalytic HER applications because of their high activity, maximised atomic efficiency, and minimised catalyst usage. However, the fabrication of single-atom catalysts is generally complicated, and requires a lot of energy and time.

The findings were published in Nature Communications under the title Two-dimensional mineral hydrogel-derived single atoms-anchored.

Korean Researchers Develop Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cells

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
9 Mar, 2023, 3:30 am

Dr. Ho-Il Ji, Dr. Jong-Ho Lee, and Dr. Hyungmook Kang's research team at the Energy Materials Research Center, Korea Institute of Science and Technology announced that they have increased the possibility of commercialization by identifying this electrolyte sintering mechanism: a next-generation high-efficiency ceramic cell that had not previously been identified.

The research team designed and conducted various model experiments based on the fact that the transient phase generated on the electrode during the electrolyte-electrode sintering process affects the densification of the electrolyte. They discovered for the first time that supplying the electrolyte with a small amount of gaseous sintering aid material from the transient phase promotes sintering of the electrolyte. Gaseous sintering aids are extremely rare and technically difficult to observe; therefore, the hypothesis that the densification of the electrolyte in prometric ton ceramic cells is caused by vaporized sintering aids has never been proposed. The research team verified the gaseous sintering aid using computational science and confirmed that the reaction did not impair the unique electrical properties of the electrolyte. Thus, the design of the core manufacturing process of prometric ton ceramic cells is expected to be possible.

Through this research, we have come one step closer to developing the core manufacturing process for prometric tonic ceramic cells. We plan to conduct research on the manufacturing process of large-area, high-efficiency prometric ton ceramic cells in the future. If large-area technology is successfully developed, it will be possible to produce pink hydrogen in connection with next-generation nuclear technology as well as green hydrogen in connection with renewable energy, which will lead to the commercialization of ceramic cells and accelerate the realization of the hydrogen economy, says Dr Ji

Green hydrogen production technology is absolutely necessary to finally realize the hydrogen economy because unlike gray hydrogen, green hydrogen does not generate large amounts of carbon dioxide in the production process. Green hydrogen production technology based on Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cells, which produce hydrogen from water using renewable energy, has recently attracted attention because it does not generate pollutants. Among these technologies, high-temperature SOECs have the advantage of excellent efficiency and production speed.

The prometric tonic ceramic cell is a high-temperature SOEC technology that utilizes a prometric ton ceramic electrolyte to transfer hydrogen ions within material. These cells also use a technology that can reduce operating temperatures from 700 degree Celsius or more to 500 degree Celsius or less, thereby reducing system size and price and improving long-term operation reliability by delaying deterioration. However, it has been difficult to enter the commercialization stage because the key mechanism responsible for sintering prometric tonic ceramic electrolytes at relatively low temperatures during the cell manufacturing process has not been specifically identified.

EBARA Develops Liquid Hydrogen Booster Pump

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
9 Mar, 2023, 3:30 am

EBARA has developed the world's first liquid hydrogen booster pump for hydrogen power generation consistent with the global expansion of the hydrogen market.

In 2019, as a grant project by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization, EBARA started developing the world's first liquid hydrogen booster pump for hydrogen power generation, which is required to supply hydrogen to hydrogen power generation gas turbines. Using this liquid hydrogen prototype pump, we conducted a test with liquid hydrogen at minus 253 degree Celsius at JAXA Noshiro Experimental Station in Akita in October 2022 and has obtained favorable results that contributed to designing a large flow rate booster pump.

Liquid hydrogen that will be used for hydrogen power generation is transported from overseas is kept in a storage tank. A Liquid hydrogen booster pump is required when it is unloaded from the tank and supplied to a hydrogen gas turbine. Due to the high level of technical difficulty, pumps with a large capacity capable of handling liquid hydrogen at minus 253 degree Celsius and high pressure for power generation are not currently in the market. Based on strong high-pressure centrifugal pumps and cryogenic technology, EBARA is planning to launch them in the market in 2023 as the world's first pump to supply liquid hydrogen fuel.

EBARA possesses technological capabilities that are compatible with a hydrogen society in the processes of Hydrogen production, transportation and End-use. Especially, as for hydrogen transportation, EBARA has technologies for Cryogenic liquid hydrogen pump as well as for compressors. EBARA has been developing various transportation methods to realize the hydrogen society such as liquid hydrogen, compressed hydrogen, and liquid ammonia.
